Maquoketa Caves - Steel Gate Passage - June 20, 2015
Our expedition through the toughest cave at Maquoketa Caves State Park in Iowa. The Steel Gate Passage is strenuous and dirty, but it was a blast! I used my GoPro Hero 4 Black to record the video. Notes to self for next time: don't wear a backpack with just one strap, wear gloves, make sure my camera doesn't get bumped out of view, and find out if there's really an exit or final ending to the cave?
The video is over 43 minutes long, and I only stopped the camera two times: once was when a large group was passing by, and the other time was when I had to change the GoPro battery. Neither stoppage lasted more than a minute or so.
I would NOT recommend this cave to anyone who is claustrophobic, badly out of shape or very large (they are narrow passageways), or to those traveling alone. The cave is very deep, and there are many times when you have to climb, crawl, or slide through areas. Cell phone service does not work, so bring plenty of lights and make sure you let someone know you are in the cave. I would also strongly recommend knee and elbow pads, a helmet, gloves, old clothes, flashlights and/or helmet lights, and a mountable camera.

Maquoketa Caves, Iowa
During this Labor Day weekend me, my boyfriend Jake and our friend Dillon went to Maquoketa Caves State Park. Here is a short video from our trip. The diffused lights are caused by water condensation on the lenses but I still think it looks cool.

Maquoketa Caves State Park - CAVING
On this episode we stopped at Maquoketa Caves State Park near Maquoketa, Iowa and did some caving! This park looks like it can get pretty busy because it is so small, but it is worth a stop! They let you explore the caves without a guide. That means you get to spend as much, or as little, time as you want, where you want. Highly recommended park! Check it out!

Maquoketa Caves State Park - Maquoketa, Iowa
Maquoketa Caves is probably Iowa's most unique state park. Its caves, limestone formations and rugged bluffs provide visitors a chance to step back into geological time thousands of years. Caves vary from the 1,100' Dancehall Cave with walkways and lighting system to Dugout Cave. The remaining caves are all different sizes and shapes. Some can be explored by walking while others can best be seen by crawling. In any case, a flashlight and old clothes and shoes are most helpful.
