Mar Lodge has key role in the survival of the montane willow
IT is a vast mosaic of habitats at the heart of the Cairngorms National Park that features 29,000 hectares of picturesque Scottish landscape.
Now Mar Lodge Estate in Braemar, Royal Deeside in Aberdeenshire, could play a major part in the survival of another increasingly scarce variety of montane willow.
The estate is recognised as one of the most important nature conservation landscapes in the British Isles with over 40% of the covered by national and international nature conservation designations.
The NTS say the montane zone of woodland is in serious decline across the UK and particularly in Scotland.
Upland montane scrub species should be thriving in the uplands of Scotland, however like Caledonian pinewoods they have suffered from overgrazing by deer and sheep and need help in recovery, said the NTS.
A recent survey showed that downy and whortle-leaved willow now occur at only a few locations on the estate.
The populations are generally small and precarious often clinging on to high altitude crags and slopes out of the reach of grazing animals.
There are many species of willows on Mar Lodge Estate and some of these are common and growing in all locations - eared-willow, creeping willow etc.
However there are true montane willow species which are much rarer and occur only in a few locations on the estate. These ones have held on in the less accessible sites. We only know of four or five sites for each of these species.
And it is hoped that by encouraging the montane zone of woodland, the Trust will improve conditions for wildlife that rely on the trees including insects and birds.

Mar Lodge Estate Storm Damage Appeal
On 30 December 2015 Mar Lodge Estate in the Carngorms experienced its worst floods in living memory. Bridges were swept away, rivers changed course and entire sections of footpath disappeared completely as a result of the severe flooding.
Property Manager David Frew has appealed for donations to help repair the extensive damage to the footpath network and natural habitat of this beautiful highland landscape.

The magnificent Fife Arms Hotel in Braemar, Scotland, one of the best hotels in the world 2019
A view within the magnificent Fife Arms Hotel in Braemar, Scotland, which features an original Picasso and a Lucian Freud on the walls, a Steinway piano treated with bleach by artist Mark Bradford and a hand-painted ceiling in the drawing room by Zhang Enli.
The hotel has been beautifully restored and improved by the new owners Iwan and Manuela Wirth of the international art gallery Hauser & Wirth. It was officially opened on Friday 11th January 2019 by their royal highnesses, the Duke & Duchess of Rothesay, Prince Charles and Camilla.
The hotel was originally built by the Duke of Fife in 1856 as a hunting lodge by Clunie Water, but during the last few years has undergone extensive restoration, with interiors by designer Russell Sage and features over 14,000 historic objects, artwork and artefacts. These include a Louise Bourgeois spider in the hotel courtyard, an original drawing by Queen Victoria, installations, paintings and drawings by artists-in-residence Gideon Summerfield and Alec Finlay. The public bar is called the 'Flying Stag' and features this creature above the bar.
