Achrafieh 2020 is a non-profit organization that will work on reinventing Achrafieh as a cleaner, greener, pedestrian friendly neighborhood with an eco-friendly public transportation system, accessible by the disabled and a zero-tolerance traffic violation policy by the year 2020. Achrafieh 2020 is certainly not a political or a sectarian movement.
Achrafieh residents are dreaming of a neighborhood where adults, youth and children can easily and safely walk on wider and cleaner sidewalks, bike on dedicated bicycle alleys, hop on a tramway as a mean of commuting; where waste is managed optimally, where parking is well organized and structured and where traffic is highly regulated and law is enforced.
Lebanon Life is HARD? Bourj Hammoud (Armenia in Beirut)
This is what a residential area looks like in Beirut, Lebanon. I visited the Bourj Hammoud, aka Little Armenia. My Airbnb was in Achrafieh, imo the best neighborhood to stay in Beirut, as it is near Armenia Street, Gemmayzeh and Mar Mikhael.
Visiting Bourj Hammoud was very interesting because I haven't been to Armenia yet. I also caught some of the deep conversation about life in general in Beirut. Rent prices are about to skyrocket and salary stay more or less the same.
Given the ongoing protests in Beirut Downtown, you can assume that there is high corruption in Lebanon. However, it is a very nice country to visit and the people are very welcoming.

Beirut is the capital city of Lebanon with a population of approximately 2.1 million people in its metropolitan area. The city is on a relatively small headland jutting into the east Mediterranean. It is by far the biggest city in Lebanon. Due to Lebanon's small size the capital has always held the status as the only true cosmopolitan city in the country, and ever since the independence, has been the commercial and financial hub of Lebanon.
Beirut has survived a rough history, falling under the occupation of one empire after another,. Originally named Bêrūt, The Wells by the Phoenicians, Beirut's history goes back more than 5000 years. Excavations in the downtown area have unearthed layers of Phoenician, Hellenistic, Roman, Arab and Ottoman civilizations.
Beirut enjoys Mediterranean climate. Come in April to June for warm, dry days and long, cool evenings (15–25°C). Temperatures in July and August rise above 30°C and humidity can be somewhat overwhelming. Most areas of Beirut have a friendly atmosphere and Beirutis have a reputation for being very polite, friendly, sociable and outgoing. The locals are used to the sight of foreigners and many of them are happy to get to know you and even to show you around the city.

Lebanese cuisine is a mix of Arab, Turkish, and Mediterranean influences, and enjoys a worldwide reputation for its richness and variety as well as its Mediterranean health factor. Olive oil, herbs, spices, fresh fruits and vegetables are commonly used, as well as dairy products, cereals, fishes and various types of meat. A visit to Beirut includes the traditional Lebanese Mezze (Meza), an elaborate variety of thirty hot and cold dishes.
As the city is quite compact, walking is the best way of getting around, and perfect for getting off the beaten track to find unexpected surprises. Most people however will not walk throughout the city, rather they will walk within certain districts and take cars/taxis to get from one district to another. Streets are poorly signposted, often giving a number instead of the street name you will have on your map, and few Beiruti locals would know how to navigate according to their names.
There are lots of hotels in Beirut's metropolitan area, ranging from cheap hostels to luxury suite hotels. Prices and quality vary across the spectrum, but if you look well enough, there's bound to be the perfect hotel inside whatever budget you set.

Laqlouq Village Vacances: Skiing Day Up the Mountains of Lebanon

Thousands attend Beirut Restaurants Festival

The third Beirut Restaurants Festival has taken place - and this year it was bigger than ever.
More than 15,000 visitors attended the event showcasing the area's culinary scene.
STORYLINE
Lebanon foodies flood into the festival that shares the best of the food scene in Beirut.
Organisers say more than 15,000 visitors attended the open-air location: an old, disused train station-turned-venue in the hip Mar Mikhael neighbourhood.
Now in its third year, the event aims to bring together the richness of the various cuisines available on the Lebanese market.
Fifty restaurants, pubs, and bakeries are selling their meals over three days, from Japanese to Italian and classic Lebanese to re-invented Middle Eastern dishes, as bands play live music.
People can enjoy and have dinner or lunch at a very low price because there are special prices for the event, says the event's project manager, Randa Dammous-Pharaon.
So they can taste from different restaurants, not only one place, and have a nice selection to taste their food. The international cuisine is here, Lebanese and other cuisines.
A group of entrepreneurs at the event are even reinventing a classic Middle Eastern sandwich: the taouk.
Samy Yazigi, owner of Tawookland, says he has brought international flavours to the traditional Lebanese food:
For example we have the Swiss cheese taouk with Emmental (cheese) from Switzerland, the Guacamole taouk, we have a crispy taouk, with many sauces, with many different tastes but still from the beginning from the Lebanese taouk, he says.
Beirut Restaurant Festival is also a chance for foreign chefs to showcase their products to Lebanese clients.
Massimiliano Bugliosi came to Lebanon from Rome and has recently opened an Italian bakery and restaurant.
He brings his authentic wood fired pizza oven to the festival to show how real Italian pizza is made.
This is his first time at this festival, but it will not be the last, he says.
A lot of people now know us, they could see our product, see that this is authentic cuisine, that we use genuine ingredients, and for us being relatively new in this market this is very important.
Beirut Restaurants Festival was organised by the Syndicate of Owners of Restaurants, Cafes, Night-Clubs & Pastries of Lebanon.
It ran from 28 to 30 September.

Beirut? An Infected Regeneration
This is a project by Miss Hala Abi Saad, who currently studies a Master's Degree in Urban Management and Development at IHS, Erasmus University Rotterdam, specializing in Urban Strategies and Planning.
This is the story of a centrifugal living that has lost its fractal properties. Fractals, being the key to living organization, were heavily destroyed in Beirut City Center, resulting in a city with an infected and contagious heart, struggling to regenerate itself after the 1975 civil war.
This animated painting is an analysis of Beirut through the “cities as sustainable organisms” perspective, which looks into developing an understanding of the power dynamics in Beirut urban regeneration. A regeneration process led mainly by a powerful neoliberal force representing real-estate development, and resisted by the weaker culture-based regeneration force representing the creative placemakers and civil society of the Mar Mikhael neighborhood.

Two Grad rockets hit Hezbollah-held district in southern Beirut
At least five people have been wounded in southern Lebanon on Sunday when two Grad rockets exploded in the Shiite-majority Hezbollah district, a Lebanese security source said.
The attack may have been a response to a speech by the militant group's leader Hassan Nasrallah a day earlier, according to Reuters, in which he committed to fighting in Syria's conflict on behalf of his ally President Bashar al-Assad.
Two Grad rockets hit the southern suburbs of Beirut. One rocket struck a car showroom where four people were wounded and vehicles were damaged, the source told AFP.
Both rockets hit the Al-Shayyah area of Beirut.
The security source said four of those wounded in the showroom were all Syrian workers. An AFP journalist said the second rocket hit an apartment block and caused widespread damage but no casualties.
This incident is probably related to the conflict in Syria, the security source said.
One rocket landed in the Mar Mikhael district on the southern edge of the capital, striking a car exhibit near a church on the street and causing all four casualties, a Lebanese army statement said. Another struck the second floor of an apartment in a building in Chiyah district south of Beirut, about two kilometers (one mile) away from Mar Mikhael. The apartment's balcony appeared peppered with shrapnel, but no one was wounded.
The state-run National News Agency said among the wounded in the Mar Mikhael blast were three Syrians.
A security official told The Associated Press that rocket launchers were found in woods in a predominantly Christian and Druse area in suburbs southeast of Beirut. The official spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.
Assad is fighting to end a two-year revolt against his rule, and has gained support from Hezbollah with fighters from the Shiite group fighting alongside regime forces in Syria over the past week.
The Free Syrian Army denied any involvement in the rocket attacks, blaming Hezbollah and the Syrian regime for the eruption of violence in Lebanon, Al Arabiya TV reported, citing the FSA's chief of staff.
Nasrallah on Saturday vowed victory in the fight against Syrian opposition fighters, saying his group is committed to its choice in the conflict and will accept all sacrifices and consequences of it.
I say to all the honorable people, to the mujahedeen, to the heroes: I have always promised you a victory and now I pledge to you a new one in Syria, he said at a ceremony marking the 13th anniversary of Israel's military withdrawal from Lebanon.
Nasrallah said Hezbollah members are fighting in Syria against Islamic extremists who pose a danger to Lebanon.
His comments on Saturday marked the first time he has publicly confirmed his men were fighting in Syria.
They are also his first since Hezbollah fighters have become deeply involved in the battle for of the central Syrian town of Qusayr.
He said tens of thousands of Islamic extremists from all over the world have been sent to Syria to fight the regime, but Hezbollah sends a few fighters and it is accused of intervening in the conflict.
Kuwait on Sunday urged its citizens to avoid Lebanon and those already there to leave as soon as possible after the rocket attacks.
Due to the unstable situation in Lebanon and the expected consequences... a foreign ministry official urged citizens to exercise caution and to abandon travel to Lebanon at present, the KUNA news agency cited an official statement as saying.

STORYLINE:
A bomb exploded on a busy Beirut street known for its restaurants, bars and nightlife late Friday, wounding two people, security officials said.
The blast came hours after U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice left Beirut after a surprise visit in support of Lebanon's new government.
The blast went off in front of a restaurant in the Ashrafiyeh neighbourhood, a security official told The Associated Press.
The bomb was placed near a parked car outside the restaurant, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was releasing information before an official announcement.
At least four cars were seen heavily damaged.
Police were investigating whether the bomb was placed inside a car or under it, the official said.
