Several monasteries in Syria, Lebanon and Turkey are dedicated to Mar Sarkis and Bakhos . These include: Monastery of Mar Sarkis and Bakhos, Tourza North Lebanon Monastery of Mar Sarkis and Bakhos - Ras Al Nahr in Ehden, Lebanon. It belongs to the Lebanese Antonin Maronite Order since 1736. Monastery of Mar Sarkis - Bsharri. It belonged since the 16th Century to the Carmelite Fathers. In 1931, it was acquired by the family of Khalil Gibran, the famous Lebanese writer, poet and painter as a burial place. In 1975, the Gibran National Committee transformed the Monastery into the Gibran Museum for the works of Gibran. Monastery of Mar Sarkis, Maaloula, Syria. Maaloula (en arabe : معلولة Ma'loula, de l'araméen : ܡܥܠܐ, ma`lā, 'entrée'), est un village chrétien au Nord-est de Damas en Syrie, qui présente la particularité d'abriter une population qui parle encore l'araméen (voir néo-araméen occidental).Le village doit sa renommée à ses refuges troglodytiques datant des premiers siècles du christianisme.
La majorité des chrétiens locaux appartient à l'Église grecque-catholique melkite. Le village est célèbre au Proche-Orient pour la ferveur et la solennité avec lesquelles il célèbre chaque 14 septembre la fête de l'Exaltation de la Croix.
Le village abrite le monastère Mar Takla, grec-orthodoxe, construit autour de la grotte et du tombeau de Sainte-Thècle fêtée le 24 septembre. En haut d'un rocher qui domine le village, se dresse un antique monastère desservi par un prêtre grec-catholique et dédié à Mar Sarkis et Mar Bacchus (Saints Serge et Bacchus), deux saints martyrs fêtés le 7 octobre.
Les chrétiens de Syrie représentent environ 7.5 % de la population du pays. C'est une des plus anciennes communautés chrétiennes du Proche-et-Moyen-Orient.

Subscribe to our channel! rupt.ly/subscribeThe ancient Christian town of Maaloula near Damascus celebrated Christmas with a special service held at the St Elias church on Tuesday, as peaceful life returns to the area and the town restores its role as an important religious settlement.
Surrounded by mountains, Maaloula is one of the few places in the world where Aramaic, the language of Jesus Christ, is spoken by the locals.
It has important religious building such as two ancient Christian monasteries - Mar Sarkis and Mar Thecla, which, however, were badly damaged by militants from several groups including the al-Nusra Front and Jaysh al-Islam in 2013.

In Syria's Maalula, one of the world's oldest Christian settlements, residents fear for the survival of the ancient Aramaic language - the biblical language of Jesus - that is starting to disappear from everyday use in the village.

(4 Mar 2016) International journalists on a trip to Syria organised by the Russian government on Thursday visited Maaloula, some 60 kilometers (40 miles) northeast of Damascus.Its historic churches pillaged by jihadis and buildings riddled with shrapnel, this ancient Christian town north of Damascus still bears the scars of the fierce fighting that devastated it two years ago.
Residents vividly recall the shock they felt when they returned to their town after it was recaptured by the Syrian army from the Nusra Front, al-Qaida's branch in Syria, and other militants in 2014.
An enclave set into the region's rocky hills, Maaloula changed hands several times in the war.
The government recaptured it from militants in early 2014 in an important propaganda victory for President Bashar Assad's government in its quest to be seen as protector of religious minorities.
Some Maaloula residents still speak a version of Aramaic, the language of biblical times believed to have been used by Jesus.
At St. Takla Convent, a Greek Orthodox monastery that dates back to the early centuries of Christianity, the dome and walls of the church were gutted by fire, its frescoes damaged by bullets and its windows broken.
A local priest says the invaders stole valuable icons and destroyed many others.
Another monastery, the Greek Catholic St. Sergius, known locally as Mar Sarkis, which sits atop a steep mountain towering over the town, was also vandalised and its rare icons, one of the oldest in the world, were stolen.
The jihadis also abducted the local nuns, who were later freed for ransom.
Although heavily armed Syrian soldiers could be seen patrolling the town, the relative peace in Maaloula contrasts sharply with other areas on the outskirts of Damascus where intense fighting continues to rage.
The capital's eastern suburbs, such as Douma or Harasta, are still held by the rebels even though government troops made some advances there recently.

Members of the Syrian Arab Army backed by Hezbollah fighters seized control of Maaloula, Monday, from opposition forces including members of Al-Nusra Front.
Religious buildings appeared to have been left ransacked, with Christian artefacts lying strewn across the floor.
The fall of Maaloula marks yet another victory for government forces, who have recaptured several rebel-held areas in the Qalamoun area during recent months.

The town is located 56 km to the northeast of Damascus and built into the rugged mountainside, at an altitude of more than 1500 m. It is known as one of three remaining villages where Western Aramaic is still spoken.
