Community living in Maasai Mara has started a conservancy dubbed Nashulai Conservancy
Despite Kenya being renowned for its rich wildlife sanctuaries, about 70 percent of its wildlife is yet to be habited in protected areas exposing the animals to poaching. In a bid to protect wildlife and conserve the ecosystem, a community living in the fringes of Maasai Mara has started a conservancy dubbed Nashulai Maasai Conservancy and is now cashing in from the high number of tourists visiting the area.

Residents Paralyse Tourism at the Mara
There was major traffic gridlock in Narok County today after residents blocked a section of the Narok- Maasai Mara road to protest the poor state of the road. The residents say repeated calls on the Government to have the road repaired have fallen on deaf ears, and are threatening to continue blocking the flow of tourists in an out of the area if nothing is done. The move comes in the high tourism season as tourists flock the Maasai Mara to watch the annual wildebeest migration. Willis Raburu has just returned from Narok and filed this report.

New mobile application helping rangers at the Maasai Mara
A Mobile phone application developed with the support of USAID is helping rangers and game scouts at the Maasai Mara conservancy effectively combat wildlife related crimes and the perennial Human-wildlife conflict. The application dubbed Wildlife Information Landscape Database allows game scouts to record information on incidences and share the same with relevant authorities. Brenda kiprono with the story……..

Owner of Olaro Conservancy nursing arrow wound on right cheek after clashes
One person has been injured at Olaro Conservancy in a battle over resources.Olaro manager William Justine is nursing an arrow wound on his right cheek after an unknown attacker shot at him on Thursday evening. William was discharged after the arrow was removed from his cheek at Ngoswani Health center. The community has accused the management of Olaro of harassment and blocking them from accessing water points.

THE MARA-SIANA WILDLIFE CONSERVANCY
Land fragmentation in the Mara landscape, manifested in closure of wildlife corridors is among major the challenges fronting conservation efforts of some of the world’s endangered species. In the Mara, this problem has translated to reduced ranges and increased human wildlife conflict. Consequently, to coexist in harmony with nature, pastoralist’s community in the Mara-Siana Conservancy courtesy of WWF-Kenya has taken up conservation as their responsibility. Through owning the change process, this community has also progressively managed to change the negative perception of wildlife as problematic animals. This has further translated to reduced retaliatory killings of wildlife especially elephants and lions.
Wild Eye Photo Academy - Mara Conservancy
Wild Eye, in conjunction with Wild Eye East Africa, and Olympus South Africa, organized a week-long Photo Academy for the men and woman rangers of the Mara Conservancy - and what a week it was!
Olympus South Africa, in association with Wild Eye, had agreed to donate 6 mirrorless cameras, 6 telephoto zoom lenses, and 6 wide angle lenses to be used by the Mara Conservancy in their daily efforts to prevent illegal poaching, promote conservation and to ensure ongoing and sustainable eco-tourism in the Mara Triangle.

Two conservancies file petition to stop Mara Ltd from taking over
Two conservancies have gone to court to block the greater Mara Management Limited from taking over management at the Maasai Mara Game Reserve.
The Naiboisho and Mara North conservancies have filed a petition to have Seiya Limited take charge of operations instead, on grounds that the company is best placed to run the affairs of conservation, compared to Mara Management Limited.
NAROK TROUBLED CONSERVANCY: Groups protest poor management
Over 1,000 group ranch members at the Naboisho and Mara North conservancies, yesterday staged demonstrations to protest poor management of the conservancies in Narok West.
The protestors claim there is no transparency in the operations of the conservancies.
Their spokesperson David Ole Mako, said there is need for land owners to be included in decision making on how resources will be utilised as well as how the proceeds of tourism will be shared.
Ole Mako accused a section of conservancy officials of having benefited from proceeds of tourism and leaving members out of the deals.
