Marathon Lake is an artificial lake created with the purpose of concentrating water for the water supply of Athens. It was formed by the erection of the Marathon Dam at the junction of the streams of Haradros and Barnabas and a few kilometers from the town of Marathon Attica.

Marathon Lake was the main reservoir of water for the Athens water supply since 1931, when it began to provide water until 1959. In 1959 a supply connection started from Lake Yliki and since 1981 more water for water supply Of the Greek capital comes from the artificial lake of Mornos. Nowadays all the water of Lake Marathon would only be sufficient for a few days of water supply in Athens.

The area of the lake with water at the height of the spillway is 2.45 square kilometers (2450 acres) and the maximum depth is 54 meters. The lake gathers water from an area, called the basin, stretching 118 sq. Km. Km, with an average yield of 14,400,000 m³ per year, with an average annual rainfall of 580 millimeters. The average volume of the lake is 12,000,000 m³, while the maximum volume (capacity) is 41,000,000 m³ (of which 34,000,000 can be pumped).

The top of the dam is at an altitude of 227 meters above sea level and its base at an altitude of 173 meters. The spillway, however, is at an altitude of 223 meters and this is the maximum elevation of the surface of the lake above the sea level. The flow rate of the spillway is 520 m³ / sec. The dam was built by the American company ULEN (which, on the basis of the contract, retained the property of the capital city's water company until 1974). Construction of the dam lasted from 1926 until 1929.

So we decided to take a trip to visit Marathon on our last day in Greece. Surprisingly, there isn't a great deal to do besides visiting the Marathon Running Museum and the Battle of Marathon Athenian Burial Tomb. They also have the classic marathon course set up with mile markers all the way into Athens, so that was a nice hidden surprise!

Marathon (Demotic Greek: Μαραθώνας, Marathónas; Attic/Katharevousa: Μαραθών, Marathṓn) is a town in Greece, the site of the battle of Marathon in 490 BC, in which the heavily outnumbered Athenian army defeated the Persians. The tumulus or burial mound (Greek Τύμβος, tymbos, tomb) of the 192 Athenian dead, also called the Soros, which was erected near the battlefield, remains a feature of the coastal plain. The Tymbos is now marked by a marble memorial stele and surrounded by a small park.
