Jedariya | Smile you are in Sharjah
Maraya Art Centre has collaborated with Zena Adhami on the third edition of Jedariya. UAE born graphic artist Zena Adhami, drew inspiration from the Arabic phrase “Smile you are in Sharjah”, an iconic sign on Sharjah’s roundabout next to the port.
You can visit Jedariya located next to Noor island entrance, on the Sharjah Corniche.
Jedariya | Myne and Yours
Maraya Art Centre, continues to enrich Sharjah’s cultural landscape, literally, with a life-size mural by MYNEANDYOURS. Jedariya, the live outdoor street art initiative presents a street artist to bring to life and beautify areas of the city with their signature style, bold colours and inspiration they find from Sharjah.
Born and raised in London, Iraqi Marwan Shakarchi moved to Dubai a year ago to pursue a career in the arts where he came up with the image of a cloud caricature with ‘x’s for eyes. The symbol that he has been using to represent his practice and has since become synonymous with the artist himself and various marketing elements such as stickers, postcards and key chains.
Interested in symbol repetition, Shakarchi likes to leave his mark on new surfaces, leaving people who come across it something to think about. Now with a much, much larger canvas, he hopes that his symbol will “open up a dialogue with the public, to inspire them to dream big, and to brighten up their day with strong colours, and a positive message.”
The final product consisted of colourful clouds rising from the ground to the sky against a grey backdrop, with lines which follow them representing motion, which in turn signify people’s motion to develop and move forward. This, he says, also reflects in all great initiatives, industries and cities, in particular art in Sharjah and the UAE.
PLACE AND UNITY
PLACE AND UNITY: Works from the ADMAF Art Collection at Maraya Art Centre
Curated by: Dr. Alexandra MacGilp
31 October, 2016 – 31 January, 2017
Artists are frequently concerned with place – examining and capturing the soul of a location they have a connection with, be it physical, emotional or philosophical.
Maraya Art Centre has selected a group of works from the art collection of the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation (ADMAF) drawn together under the title Place and Unity. Works by fourteen Emirati and UAE-based artists from across the generations will be exhibited. The works on display include a striking new commission called Foresta Sommersa by Rand Abdul Jabbar that refers to the city of Venice where she was mentored by the Italian artist Fabrizio Plessi. The artists in this show address themes of home, identity, communication and nomadism by referring to different countries and cities: from the UAE to Palestine, from Geneva to Shanghai. They examine what unites people of different nationalities with a specific focus on the United Arab Emirates today.
Consisting of acquisitions, commissions and donations, the ADMAF Art Collection has an emphasis on Emirati practice and seeks to highlight artistic expression from the Arab world and Middle East. The collection features more than 80 pieces which present the creativity of the UAE and the wider Arab world. By exhibiting the collection in its offices and through exhibitions and loans, ADMAF promotes the achievements and oeuvre of each artist – engaging, educating and informing the public about the region’s art scene.

Ammar Al Attar presents a series of fifty new portraits of artists and art world figures from across the UAE.The photographer travelled around the country to make portraits of artists, designers, curators, gallerists, collectors and writers in their studios and places of work.
This project traces the shifting ecosystem of the local art scene across geographies and generations. In both black and white and colour, Al Attar’s analogue photographs offer insights into his work process as well as a behind the scenes look at the professional networks and friendships that exist amongst artists and art workers.
He will also exhibit his contact sheets and notebooks that share with the viewer his series of travels and conversations on the winding journey from one subject to another. In our age of digital phone photography and instagram addiction, Al Attar is increasingly fascinated with older photographic technologies and the elements of time and chance that they allow into the image.
A Burgeoning Collection
CURATED BY: Dr. Alexandra MacGilp
This exhibition will present selected works of contemporary art and design from the Maraya Art Centre collection, including new acquisitions. It will include works by thirty artists and designers who are Emirati, UAE-based or from the wider Gulf area. The show is a testament to the growing art scene in the Gulf region and Maraya's commitment to supporting emerging local talent.
A Burgeoning Collection will show works of art and design from Maraya's growing collection in a variety of media, from photography to sculpture. It will include artworks commissioned for exhibitions at Maraya Art Centre and 1971 Design Space, as well as by artists in residence, and works from the Maraya Video Archive. The show celebrates the work of the local artists supported by Maraya, often when in the early stages of their careers and forms a foundation from which the collection can develop. Ultimately Maraya will loan works from its collection to other institutions with the goal of promoting the evolving art scene in the region.

Jedariya | Inkman
Maraya Art Centre has initiated a new mural as part of this year’s Islamic Arts Festival organized by the Department of Culture and Information to bring art to the streets of Sharjah under its street art initiative “Jedariya”. The artwork has been executed by the Tunisian Calligraffiti artist and graphic designer Inkman (Mohamed Kilani Tbib, born in 1990) who started the project in late December 2018 and has completed it in January 2019.
The new mural will be viewable in the Heart of Sharjah, on Corniche Road heading towards the Radisson Blu Resort, in the area of Al Majarah, on the building opposite to Al Maghfirah Mosque and close to the Sharjah Art Foundation’s Rain Room.
The mural displays a poem by the poetess Munira Sabt Al Sabieie from Bahrain who expressed her deep appreciation for the Emirate of Sharjah in the Arabic Poetry Festival 2012. The lines of the poem selected by Inkman read as follows:
“Sharjah is like a sun in its presence, light twinkles from it and radiance
elevates it, emitting like a star, in its sky, it rises”.

Maraya Art Centre is pleased to invite you to ‘Accented’ exhibition curated by Sharjah-born critic Murtaza Vali.
The exhibition’s theme originates in the premise that the ‘accent’ acts as an “enduring sign or figure of cultural difference in the age of globalisation”. Proponents of globalisation suggest that with the recent worldwide expansion of finance, media, and technology has come increasing transparency and equivalence across formerly distinct cultures and languages. Yet the accent, localised in and expressed through the body, is that elemental component which persists, resisting and transcending acts of intercultural translation.
‘Accented’ approaches the accent as far more than a purely linguistic phenomenon. It examines how processes of intercultural translation extend well beyond the limits of language, into the realm of images, spaces, sounds, and smells, and into interior décor and fashion trends. The accent can be understood as an embellishment that emphasises difference, an accessory through which culture is expressed on bodies and introduced into spaces. The UAE’s unique multicultural demographic, and the cosmopolitan ethos it fosters, creates a condition where social and cultural space is, arguably, always accented, offering a rich arena for ‘Accented’ to explore, using this theoretically enriched notion of the accent as a lens.
The exhibition includes eight new works, commissioned and produced by Maraya Art Centre, including two site-specific installations at Al Majaz Waterfront.
Artists:
Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Abbas Akhavan, Ammar Al Attar, Fayçal Baghriche, Vikram Divecha, GCC Collective, Iman Issa, Pouran Jinchi, Raja’a Khalid, Monira Al Qadiri, Farah Al Qasimi, Abdullah Al Saadi, THE STATE, Jaret Vadera and Lantian Xie.

Imitation Game is an exhibition of newly-commissioned outdoor sculpture for Maraya Art Park. The artists explore what makes us human in the digital age. They examine our interaction with the chatbots who increasingly haunt the online world. Memory is one thing that machines are not able to imitate and this is addressed poetically in the exhibition. Exuberant sculptures and installations playfully examine the torrent of consumerism that engulfs our everyday existence and how it shapes our identity. The artists also investigate these questions with a focus on the idiosyncratic response of the Arab world to today's global monoculture. They imagine alternative presents and futures as well as making us aware of the histories of the built environment, urban and rural, that surrounds and shapes us.

Friday Market [45 Years]

Fujairah is one of the hidden gems in the UAE. known for its rich heritage, I decided to visit one of the most prominent place Fujairah has to offer, the Friday market. Filming the Friday market has been a unique experience on its own. Offering a wide variety of goods and services, I thought it's best to start by interviewing people and getting to know how they started established their businesses in the market.
