A long walk through Marble Mill Site Park, Gunnison County, Colorado
The town of Marble, Colorado (in Gunnison County) is where this historical mill site park is located (at an elevation of about 2,436 metres (7,992 feet).
The flyer, at the park's entrance, states; In 1905, the Colorado-Yule Marble Company was founded and proved to be the beginning of Marble's greatest boom.
This site was the location of a large marble processing mill in which marble blocks were carved and then shipped throughout the country. Colorado-Yule removed the blocks from the marble quarry located 3.9 miles [6.27 km] up the road, and across the bridge over the Crystal River. There is no public access to the quarry.
Touted by many to be the finest in its class, stone quarried in Marble became the perfect choice for structures like the Lincolm Memorial in Washington, D.C., the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington Cemetery, and the Byron R. White United States Courthouse in Denver (formerly the U.S. Post Office and Federal Building).

Crystal Mill - Colorado HD
when you introduce technology with history you get phenomenal life moments captured in time
The Crystal Mill, or the Old Mill is an 1892 wooden powerhouse located on an outcrop above the Crystal River in Crystal, Colorado, United States. It is accessible from Marble Colorado via 4x4. Although called a mill, it is more correctly denoted as a compressor station, which used a water turbine to drive an air compressor. The compressed air was then used to power other machinery or tools. Today it stands as a Colorado icon, and is reputed to be the most photographed site in the state.[2]

American Southwest (#06): Marble & Redstone, Colorado
The Marble Capital of the United States ... was initially settled by prospectors who formed a camp known as Yule Creek, named for pioneer George Yule. Gold, silver, and lead were mined from 1880 into the 1890s. Even before the prospectors found their deposits, geologist Sylvester Richardson had noted in 1873 the beds of marble in Whitehouse Mountain. The marble was merely a curiosity then, because it was on the Ute Reservation. After the Utes were moved west to allow prospectors in, attempts to quarry the stone in the 1880s enjoyed limited profitability because of the area's remoteness from a railhead.
The standard-gauge Crystal River & San Juan Railroad was completed from Carbondale in 1906, connecting the finishing mill at Marble with the Denver & Rio Grande branch line to Aspen. That rail link, combined with a four-mile-long electric railway that transported marble from the quarry to the huge finishing mill, made production much more lucrative. The first large order, for a Cleveland courthouse, invigorated the community. The best years followed, peaking from 1912 to 1917. The town was, literally, made by and of marble. Entire buildings were constructed of it, as were foundations and even sidewalks.
The town of Marble had its share of setbacks. A fire in 1916 destroyed much of downtown. Avalanches buried the finishing mill and the railroad tracks. Financial problems forced the closure of the quarry in 1941, as consumers began to order veneers instead of blocks or to choose cheaper marble substitutes. Mudslides in that year took large portions of the business section. Machinery, rails, even metal window frames were salvaged for scrap during World War II. Its glory days apparently over, Marble became a town of pleasant summer cabins.
Redstone ... named for its sandstone cliffs, Redstone came to life because of vast coal deposits found in 1884 by John Cleveland Osgood. He and other investors founded the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company, which became an industry giant. Their mines at Coal Basin, four miles west of Redstone, produced more than a million tons of coal. Osgood was a different brand of capitalist. Instead of taking advantage of underpaid workers, he did quite the opposite, creating Redstone as a model company town with practically utopian conditions. Married men and their families lived in eighty-four Swiss-chalet-style cottages, no two alike. Each two-to-five-room cottage, landscaped with lawns and gardens, had the then-unheard of luxury of electricity and running water. Bachelors lived in a forty-room lodge, now the respected Redstone Inn. Its clubhouse was open to all employees and featured a library and theater, where the company provided drama productions, lectures, and concerts.

Standing Stone State Park Marble Tournament
Standing Stone State Park is a famous place... especially among marble players.
It’s the home of the annual Rolley Hole tournament... which attracts competitors from around the globe.
More of the players these days have gray hair and wrinkles than in days gone by.
But park rangers have been working hard to stir up new interest among children in a game called Ringer.
And it’s working.
You can shoot on over to our website wildsidetv.com for more information.
Response to marble camps and tournaments at Standing Stone State Park has been big.
In fact... Ranger Shawn Hughes says he could easily sign up at least 100 kids for events, it there were enough facilities in the park to play.
And he’s excited to see other state parks getting on board to help preserve an old culture.

Crystal Mill ADVENTURE and the Devils Punchbowl! BEAUTIFUL autumn colors!
Join along with me for my last adventure before winter hits. Here I drive to Marble, Colorado to go explore the ever famous Crystal Mill power station. This mill used to provide hydroelectric power to all the mining towns in the area back in its heyday, but now sits as an abandoned reminder to the past. Afterwords I continue on where most people turn around to go drive the Devils Punchbowl which is a narrow jeep trails, with off cambers and cliff faces. During which you are rewarded with beautiful views and picturesque waterfalls.
