War memorial at Kundasang.m4v
Memorial to the Australian (British and New Zealand as well) service men who perished during the Sandakan to Ranau Death march in 1945 (North Borneo) under the Japanese occupation. This place is an emotionally moving experience for any visiting Australian, a must visit place... although it is some distance from Kota Kinabalu, about 65 km - it is well worth the visit.

Queen leads Remembrance Day tributes at the Cenotaph
Watch ceremony at the Cenotaph in London where the Queen led tributes to members of the armed forces who have lost their lives fighting for the nation.
Remembrance Sunday services are being held across the United Kingdom to honour the country's fallen troops.
In London, the Queen led a ceremony at Whitehall's Cenotaph where she laid a wreath in memory of members of the armed forces killed while serving the nation.
The event is the focal point of the country's Remembrance Sunday ceremonies and saw other senior royals and political leaders also leave floral tributes at the memorial.
A two-minute silence at the heart of the service was marked at the beginning and end by the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery firing one round from one of their 13-pounder First World War guns from Horse Guards Parade.
Prime Minister David Cameron said this year's Remembrance Sunday was particularly poignant as 2014 marked the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War, the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings and the end of Britain's conflict in Afghanistan.
Security around the royal family and senior politicians attending today’s events was at its tightest since 2001 after police and the intelligence services claimed to have foiled a plot by Islamists to mount a terrorist attack.

5.40 pm every Saturday evening, a parade followed by a wreath-laying ceremony for all the soldiers who lost their lives in battle for the country takes place. A band of musicians from the first Mahar Battalion of the Indian Army marches in and play ‘My Home’, on a Scottish pipe tune as they march into the museum. The sound of the marching in tandem is sure to give you chills.
southern command
The band is followed by a platoon while a live commentary is synced with the proceedings. ‘Sare Jahaan Se Achha’ plays in the background and the contingent salutes the war heroes and the lowering of the flag takes place, marking the end of the 20-minute ceremony. To carry out this parade, there is a lot of coordination, practice and hard effort that goes into it. School kids, elderly and many other city-dwellers can all be a part of this, so if you haven’t made any plans this Saturday, head to the War Memorial and support our soldiers and cheer them on as loud as you can.

The War Memorial of Korea is located in Yongsan-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul, South Korea. It opened in 1994 on the former site of the army headquarters to exhibit and memorialize the military history of Korea. It was built for the purpose of preventing war through lessons from the Korean War and for the hoped for peaceful reunification of North and South Korea. The memorial building has six indoor exhibition rooms and an outdoor exhibition centre displaying war memorabilia and military equipment from China,South Korea and United States.
The War Memorial was built to commemorate actors and victims in the wars which led to the modern nation state. The museum also has the purpose of educating future generations by collecting, preserving, and exhibiting various historical relics and records related to the many wars fought in the country from a South Korean perspective.
The construction of the War Memorial of Korea was completed in December 1993. The project was carried out in consultation with military experts while collecting a wide range of exhibition items at home and abroad. Upon the completion of the interior, the memorial opened officially on June 10, 1994, and became the largest landmark of its kind in the world.

68 Years Of World War II - Sandakan Day Memorial
Each year August 15, families of the fallen heroes travel to Sandakan to take part and observe the memorial service to remember their love ones. More than 2000 Australian and British prisoners of war died in the infamous Sandakan-Ranau Death marches during the Second World War.
The Sandakan Day Memorial is held every year on August 15 to remember all those who gave their lives in Sandakan and particularly the Death Marches from Sandakan to Ranau.
After the fall of Singapore and Borneo to the Japanese, a Prisoner of War Camp was established just outside of Sandakan to house approximately 750 British and more than 1650 Australian prisoners who were sent to the camp during the period 1942-43. In 1945, when the Japanese started to realise that the war may have been lost, and the Allies were closing in, the emaciated prisoners were force marched, in three separate groups, to the village of Ranau in the jungle, 260 km away, under the shadows of Mount Kinabalu.
On 28 January, 1945, 470 prisoners set off, with only 313 arriving in Ranau. On the second march, 570 started from Sandakan, but only 118 reached Ranau.
The third march which comprised the last of the prisoners from the Sandakan camp totalizing 537 prisoners. Prisoners who were unable to walk were shot. The march route was through virgin jungle infested with crocodiles, snakes and wild pigs, and some of the prisoners had no boots. Rations were less than minimal. The march took nearly a year to complete.
Once the surviving prisoners arrived in Ranau, they were put to work carrying 20 kg sacks of flour over very hilly terrain to Paginatan, over 40 km away. By the end of July, 1945, there were no prisoners left in Ranau.
Only six Australians of the 2400 prisoners survived the death march
they survived because they were able to escape from the camp at Ranau, or escaped during the march from Sandakan. No British prisoners survived.
This part of the war is considered by many to be the worst atrocity ever suffered by Australian soldiers, and compares to the atrocities of the Burma Railway, where fewer Australian POW's lost their lives.
Those that survived the ordeal of the march, did so only because they escaped into the jungle where they were cared for by local natives.
An Australian Memorial honoring the survivors, POW's, local civilians who helped by clandestinely feeding the prisoners, and soldiers who perished at Sandakan and during the death marches into the jungle, has been erected at what was the Prisoner of War Camp in Taman Rimba close to the city of Sandakan.
The Sandakan Prisoner of War Camp has now been transformed into a very beautiful park with a pavilion on site which houses the history of this very tragic period.

ANZAC DAY 2019 Sandakan Memorial Park
Some 2700 Australian and British prisoners of war, the great majority of whom had been captured at the surrender at Singapore in February 1942, were imprisoned here in Sandakan. They were used as a labour force to build a military airstrip. Due to Japanese concerns about resistance movements within the camp, almost all of the Allied officers were removed to Kuching in 1943. Early in 1945 the Japanese decided to move the remaining prisoners some 260 kilometers west into the mountains to the small settlement of Ranau. On three forced marches between January and June, hundreds of them died. Almost all of the remaining prisoners died at the Sandakan and Ranau camps.
Of all those who had be alive in January 1945, estimated to be 2500, by the end of August only six - all Australians - survived. Two of the six escaped into the jungle during the second march in June 1945. Assisted by local, they were eventually picked up by the Allied units. Another 4 escaped from Ranau in July and were also fed and hidden from the Japanese by local people, until the end of the war.

More than 300 British veterans gather as Korean War memorial unveiled in London
A memorial marking the sacrifices made by British troops during the Korean War has been unveiled in central London.
More than 300 British veterans attended the unveiling of the memorial which was paid for by the South Korean government, Korean companies and Koreans living in Britain.
Coming more than 60 years after the end of the war, London is the last capital city among the allies in the Korean War to have such a momument.
Britain sent 81-thousand troops to Korea during the war.
More than 11-hundred British soldiers died in the conflict.
To mark day Queen Elizabeth the second sent a congratulatory speech that was read on her behalf by the Duke of Gloucester. Take a look.
The memorial is a fitting tribute to the veterans of that fierce conflict. I will ensure that they and their fallen comrades are never forgotten.
The British veterans have been pushing for the establishment of the memorial since 2011... and they expressed hope the sacrifices of their brothers would never be forgotten.
National Service Memorial March Part 2
The ceremony began with more than 2,000 ex-servicemen marching along Anzac Parade - the largest national reunion of service veterans.
They then gathered with their families for the dedication of a national service fountain at the Australian War Memorial.
The fountain honours the 287,000 national servicemen who served in the Defence Force between 1950 and 1972.
