Mardi Gras New Orleans Louisiana 4K
Follow the adventure:
Mardis Gras, also called Shrove Tuesday, or Fat Tuesday refers to events of the carnival in New Orleans which ends on Ash Wednesday.
Every year I’ve made it a goal to attend a different Carnival around the world to see how every different culture celebrates. This year it was left to the very last minute before deciding it was time to visit one of the most famous festivals in the US… Mardi Gras. The first time I visited New Orleans Louisiana was years ago and it absolutely blew me away. The food, the music, the scenery and the craziness made for the most unforgettable trip and this was the perfect time to go back.
So myself and Colin Dougan flew in for Mardi Gras 2017 to meet up with our buddies Kevin Rist and Chris Gaines. The goal was to capture the epic parades, the Jazz of Frenchman Street, the anarchy of Bourbon, and to see as many surrounding sights of NOLA as possible. The trip resulted in about 5 days of no sleep, a suitcase full with beads, some epic memories and this film which hopefully gives you a glimpse of how amazing New Orleans Mardi Gras is.

VISITING NEW ORLEANS FOR THE FIRST TIME / MARDI GRAS PARADE 2019 / UNITED STATES TRAVEL VLOG
We finally went on our first vacation without the kids! We like to go somewhere each offseason, but this time we decided to leave the kids at home and go on a cruise! When we were looking for a cruise to book we got really excited when we saw one that left from New Orleans, LA. Since neither of us had ever been there before. It was then just our luck that we were there over Mardi Gras (kinda, almost) so there were parades going on during the few hours we had there before getting on our ship!

New Orleans, Mardi Gras 2018
Mardi Gras is French for Fat Tuesday, reflecting the practice of the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season.
Mardi Gras arrived in North America as a French Catholic tradition in the late 17th century, when King Louis XIV sent an expedition to defend the territory of Louisiana, which included what are now the U.S. states of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and part of eastern Texas.
The expedition, led by Iberville, entered the mouth of the Mississippi River on the evening of March 2, 1699 (new style), Lundi Gras. The party proceeded upstream to a place on the east bank about 60 miles downriver from where New Orleans is today. This was on March 3, 1699, Mardi Gras, so in honour of this holiday, Iberville named the spot Point du Mardi Gras. Bienville went on to found the settlement of Mobile, Alabama in 1702 as the first capital of French Louisiana. In 1703 French settlers in Mobile established the first organised Mardi Gras celebration tradition in what was to become the United States. The first informal mystic society, or krewe, was formed in Mobile in 1711, the Boeuf Gras Society. By 1720, Biloxi had been made capital of Louisiana. The French Mardi Gras customs had accompanied the colonists who settled there.
In 1723, the capital of Louisiana was moved to New Orleans, founded in 1718. The first Mardi Gras parade held in New Orleans is recorded to have taken place in 1837. The tradition in New Orleans expanded to the point that it became synonymous with the city in popular perception, and embraced by residents of New Orleans beyond those of French or Catholic heritage. Mardi Gras celebrations are part of the basis of the slogan Laissez les bons temps rouler (Let the good times roll).
Celebrations are concentrated for about two weeks before and through Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday (the start of lent in the Western Christian tradition). Usually there is one major parade each day (weather permitting); many days have several large parades. The largest and most elaborate parades take place the last five days of the Mardi Gras season. In the final week, many events occur throughout New Orleans and surrounding communities, including parades and balls (some of them masquerade balls).
The parades in New Orleans are organized by social clubs known as krewes; most follow the same parade schedule and route each year. The earliest-established krewes were the Mistick Krewe of Comus, the earliest, Rex, the Knights of Momus and the Krewe of Proteus. Several modern super krewes are well known for holding large parades and events, such as the Krewe of Endymion (which is best known for naming celebrities as grand marshals for their parades), the Krewe of Bacchus (similarly known for naming celebrities as their Kings), as well as the Zulu Social Aid & Pleasure Club—a predominantly African American krewe. Float riders traditionally toss throws into the crowds. The most common throws are strings of colorful plastic beads, doubloons (aluminum or wooden dollar-sized coins usually impressed with a krewe logo), decorated plastic throw cups, Moon Pies, and small inexpensive toys, but throws can also include lingerie and more sordid items. Major krewes follow the same parade schedule and route each year.
While many tourists center their Carnival season activities on Bourbon Street and in New Orleans and Dauphin, major parades originate in the Uptown and Mid-City districts and follow a route along St. Charles Avenue and Canal Street, on the upriver side of the French Quarter. Mardi Gras day traditionally concludes with the Meeting of the Courts between Rex and Comus.
Other cities along the Gulf Coast with early French colonial heritage, from Pensacola, Florida; Galveston, Texas; to Lake Charles and Lafayette, Louisiana; and north to Natchez, Mississippi, have active Mardi Gras celebrations.
New Orleans 4K - World's Longest Bridge - Lake Pontchartrain Causeway
9,500 concrete pilings, 5 ft wide each, across 24 miles of water! This is a little different from my driving in cities content but I couldn't resist publishing this video. I'd like to experiment with more infrastructure related videos. Let me know in the comments if you like it!
The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway is a fixed link composed of two parallel bridges crossing Lake Pontchartrain in southern Louisiana, United States. The longer of the two bridges is 23.83 miles (38.35 km) long. The bridges are supported by 9,500 concrete pilings. The two bridges feature a bascule, which spans the navigation channel 8 miles (13 km) south of the north shore.
Since 1969, it was listed by Guinness World Records as the longest bridge over water in the world; in 2011, in response to the opening of the longer Jiaozhou Bay Bridge in China, Guinness World Records created two categories for bridges over water: continuous and aggregate lengths over water. Lake Pontchartrain Causeway then became the longest bridge over water (continuous) while Jiaozhou Bay Bridge the longest bridge over water (aggregate).
New Orleans is the largest city located in the Gulf Coast region of the southern United States. New Orleans is world-renowned for its french style, distinct music, Creole cuisine, unique dialect, and its annual celebrations and festivals, most notably Mardi Gras. The historic heart of the city is the French Quarter, known for its French and Spanish Creole architecture and vibrant nightlife along Bourbon Street. The city has been described as the most unique in the United States, owing in large part to its cross-cultural and multilingual heritage.
Tourism
New Orleans has many visitor attractions, from the world-renowned French Quarter to St. Charles Avenue, (home of Tulane and Loyola Universities, the historic Pontchartrain Hotel and many 19th-century mansions) to Magazine Street with its boutique stores and antique shops.
According to current travel guides, New Orleans is one of the top ten most-visited cities in the United States; 10.1 million visitors came to New Orleans in 2004.
A 2009 Travel + Leisure poll of America's Favorite Cities ranked New Orleans first in ten categories, the most first-place rankings of the 30 cities included. According to the poll, New Orleans was the best U.S. city as a spring break destination and for wild weekends, stylish boutique hotels, cocktail hours, singles/bar scenes, live music/concerts and bands, antique and vintage shops, cafés/coffee bars, neighborhood restaurants, and people watching.
The French Quarter (known locally as the Quarter or Vieux Carré) contains popular hotels, bars and nightclubs. Notable tourist attractions in the Quarter include Bourbon Street, Jackson Square, St. Louis Cathedral, the French Market (including Café du Monde, famous for café au lait and beignets) and Preservation Hall.
Founded in 1718 by the French, New Orleans was once the territorial capital of French Louisiana before being traded to the United States in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. New Orleans in 1840 was the third-most populous city in the United States. The city's location and flat elevation have historically made it very vulnerable to flooding. State and federal authorities have installed a complex system of levees and drainage pumps in an effort to protect the city.
Legendary Cities : New Orleans And its French heritage
New Orleans, Louisiana: the home of Mardi Gras, and the musical and cultural hotbed of the southern United States. The city’s culture derived itself from a blend of French, Spanish, African-American, Creole and Native American roots. We explore her streets lined with French colonial-style buildings, and resonate with her vibrant atmosphere, along the promenades full of revelry and street music.
Featuring aerial footage of this city of revelry along the Mississipi, an inside look at landmarks such as the “Napoleon’s House”, the St Louis Cathedral, and more, we get a taste of Louisiana’s colorful history. Under French colonial rule it was a place where France sent their prostitutes, smugglers, counterfeiters and other petty criminals to start new lives. It became a haven and the beating heart of a vibrant, longstanding African-American community with deep roots. And even after the city’s destruction during Hurricane Katrina, the city dances on, celebrating life…
