The Ancient City of Mardin, Turkey
Jetset Extra toured the province of Mardin in Southeastern Turkey with archeologist and museum curator Masut Alp. This is one of Mesopotamia's oldest settled areas, with evidence of human habitation dating back to 4,000 BCE. Many civilizations have laid claim to this area, including the Romans, Mongols, Ottomans, and more. Mardin's administration is currently working to connect with its storied history by restoring the landscape to its original layout and in so doing, submit itself as a candidate for the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Mardin:
Mardin is a city in southeastern Turkey. The capital of Mardin Province, it is known for the Artuqid (Artıklı or Artuklu in Turkish) architecture of its old city, and for its strategic location on a rocky hill near the Tigris River that rises steeply over the flat plains.
Mardin is one of the oldest settled areas in upper Mesopotamia. Excavations done in the 1920s discovered remains in the area that dated to 4000 BCE. The first known civilization were the Subarians who were then succeeded in 3000BCE by the Hurrians. The Elamites gained control around 2230 BCE. and were followed by the Babylonians, Hittites, Assyrians, Romans and Byzantines.
In 692, the Muslim Ummayads arrived and introduced Islam. The Abbasid Caliphate based in Baghdad replaced them in 824. Factions of the Seljuk Turks fought each other over Mardin as it changed hands many times before it was finally taken by Nahm ad-din Ilghazi, the bey of the Artukids, a Turkish dynasty founded by the Seljuk Emir Artuk. During the Artukid period, many of Mardin's historic buildings were constructed, including several Mosques, Palaces, Madrassas and Hans.
The lands of the Artukid dynasty fell to the Mongols sometime between 1235 and 1243, but the Mongols never directly governed the area. The Artukid family ruling Mardin became vassal state of the Mongol Empire. During the battle of Ain Jalut in 1260, the Artuqid (Artık) ruler revolted against the Mongol rule. Hulegu's general and Chupan's ancestor, Koke-Ilge of the Jalayir, stormed the city and Hulegu appointed the rebel's son, al-Nasir, governor of Mardin. Although, Hulegu suspected the latter's loyalty for a while, thereafter the Artukids remained loyal unlike nomadic Bedoun and Kurd tribes in the south western frontier. The Mongol Ilkhanids considered them important allies. For this loyalty they shown, Artukids were given more lands in 1298 and 1304. Mardin later passed to the Akkoyunlu, a federation of Turkic tribes that controlled territory all the way to the Caspian Sea. In 1517, Mardin was annexed by the Ottomans under Selim the Grim. During this time, Mardin was administered by a governor directly appointed under the Ottoman Sultan's authority. In 1923, with the founding of the Republic of Turkey, Mardin was made the administrative capital of a province named after it.Mardin has often been considered an open air museum due to its historical architecture. Most buildings use the beige colored limestone rock which has been mined for centuries in quarries around the area.

Arab Style Architecture in Mardin, Southeastern Turkey
FYI: I have been told that the architecture is Artuk!
Small Mardin in Southeastern Turkey had to be one of Travels With Sheila's favorite destinations. A hodgepodge of architecture, markets and people built in yellow limestone on top of a hill with citadels, hamams, mosques from all periods of history, and only one full day to explore. Sometimes life just isn't fair.
To do justice, we skipped...gasp... a chance to visit the important Saffron Monastery and began climbing the steep hill under the hot sun. No wimps we and former marathoners can certainly walk 1.2 miles without any sweat (scratch sweat) but almost passed out. What looked so easy became very hard under the unrelenting sun, heat and steep uphill until the nicest residents took pity on us and offered a ride to the top. Shukran, shukran, shukran and a 1,000 blessings from Allah on them!
Mardin. What a place...and so close to Syria!

MARDİN MUSEUM EDUCATİON ACTİVİTİES
Mardin Museum, do you know that it is a place where children get training while they are having good times? Its name is ArchaeoPark.
ArchaeoPark is a class without walls where abundance of games are played, yes there are desks there but different educational works are done on these desks, there is also no bell to ring , and therefore children are not getting bored at all and laughter is never missing here
Entertainment and frinedfull conversation begin as soon as one steps into the garden of ArchaeoPark. Who invented the script that children are using every day? How fire was first lit? Why money was invented? Where is Mesopotamia? The answers to such questions that children are curious of are being searched in the ArchaeoPark and during the work is done the skills of being aware and to protect while recognizing the cultural heritage is being developed with imagination.
All the sentences in the ArchaeoPark start with ‘old’ and ‘new’. Just like in fairy tales, children are being taken to very ancient times and this fairy journey provides them to a better understanding of today. In addition to these a great amount of workshop is carried out, too.
Children are providing a better understanding of today via the science of ancient times called Archaeology, and children are discovering and exploring everything at the ArchaeoPark. Children are accompanied by archaeologists to learn the entire process of scientific archaeological excavation via doing an archaeological excavation. The maintenance and the cleaning of the artefact being unearthed belong to the children. After the children ponder on the usage of the artefact and they fill out the information sheet of the artefact and then finally they are placing the artefacts in the showcases in the museum. Via this way the children learned the process of evolving the artefacts by experiencing and applying all the process themselves.
Beside these, it is very surprising and cheerful to encounter with Ungo who lived in ancient times. Children are free to ask questions to Ungo who knows ancient times the best. Figures representing different cultures of Mesopotamian civilizations are dressed in colourful outfits and are welcoming the children with their folksy dresses; Sumerian, Chaldean, Yezidi, Kurds, Arabs and Turks. Every child should see this place and should be photographed with them. Children are learning the about the discoveries that shaped the world with the cause and effect relationship; children are using cane pens like the Sumerians who invented the cuneiform writing and children are getting into the adventure via the cane pen on the other hand they also mint coins and they gain the ability of imagining the adventure of money with the Lydians.
Now it’s the turn of the most enjoyable moments of the children; the games. These are mostly formerly played games, tended to be forgotten games such as sacks, egg-and-spoon race, jump rope, jacks and humming top are just a few of them.
After various atelier and educational workshops such as clay sculpture, marbling, music, madder printing and many other experience full workshops the children are getting to a trip into to the museum accompanied with an instructor and now the children see and seize everything that they had done in the ArcheoPark and observe the concrete examples of everything and understands why the artefacts and the memories of their ancestors have to be protected
The educational ArchaeoPark is our museum’s entertainment venue. To come here and to be with us is easy; being a child and getting an appointment is sufficient. You will see and experience that it is very enjoyable. We all are more than welcome.
