Vallejo California and Mare Island Shipyard
This video is a flyover of the beautiful waterfront of Vallejo California. Some of the footage is in the morning hours with the long shadows and the other in the afternoon.
Mare Island in Vallejo, CA is making a Comeback!
And for the first time in years, has major development plans and a tremendous opportunity with more space available for businesses through Choose Vallejo.
Just in the last few years shows like 13 Reasons Why, MythBusters and an upcoming Transformers movie were filmed here thanks largely in part to Film Mare Island, Cinelease, Lennar Mare Island and City of Vallejo - Local Government.
Home to the oldest golf course west of the Mississippi, Mare Island Golf Club has one of the best views for golf in the Bay Area, allowing you to see deep into the distant corners of the North Bay.
Taste the amazing wine of Vino Godfather Winery located on Walnut Ave inside one of the Historic Admiral Mansion’s, giving you a first hand experience into the charm and sheer brilliance these buildings still possess to this day. They have live music every Saturday with plenty of wine to spare!
Drink craft beer along the water, with nine historic Coal Sheds sitting prominently on the waterfront of Mare Island. Converted from their original role of providing coal for the steamships of the Naval Base, the Coal Sheds now house artists, speaker manufacturers, Renaissance faire producers, welders and of course the Mare Island Brewing Co. which is currently in their final phases of construction. Their Taproom is located directly across the water inside the Vallejo Ferry Terminal.
Ride over from San Francisco directly to Vallejo on the San Francisco Bay Ferry which has daily trips to and from SF, and just within the last year, now provides ferry riders a direct stop to the newly constructed Mare Island Ferry Terminal.
Mare Island is also home to Touro University, CA which was established in 1997 and offers graduate degrees in osteopathic medicine, pharmacy, physician assistant studies, nursing, public health and education. The mission of Touro University is to educate caring professionals to serve, to lead and to teach. Students from diverse backgrounds are recruited nationally to create a dynamic, robust learning environment.
But did you know it was once a thriving Naval Base?
The base served America from 1854 to 1996 and provided outstanding service from Steamboats all the way to Nuclear Submarines. Spanning World War I and II, Vietnam and the Cold War.
Some notable achievements included:
Creating the Navy’s first Aircraft Landing Deck as well as launching the first electrically driven ship in the US Navy. They were in fact the same ship, the USS Langley (CV-1/AV-3) was the United States Navy's first aircraft carrier, converted in 1920 from the collier USS Jupiter (AC-3), and also the US Navy's first turbo-electric-powered ship.
The only battleship ever built on the West Coast was the USS California (BB-44), one of two Tennessee-class battleships completed shortly after World War I, was the fifth ship of the United States Navy named in honor of the 31st state. She was the last American battleship built on the West Coast, and the only one of the dreadnought type.
Built 5 of the 7 top scoring United States Submarines of World War II were built on Mare Island: The 1943 USS Tang – submarine (sank 24 ships in 5 World War II Pacific patrols (2nd highest number for a U.S. submarine). The 1941 USS Silversides – submarine (sank 23 ships in 14 World War II Pacific patrols (3rd highest number for a U.S. submarine). The 1944 USS Spadefish – submarine (sank 21 ships in 5 World War II Pacific patrols (4th highest number for a U.S. submarine). The 1943 USS Seahorse – submarine sank 20 ships in 8 World War II Pacific patrols (6th highest number for a U.S. submarine). The 1942 USS Wahoo – submarine (sank 20 ships in 7 World War II Pacific patrols (6th highest number for a U.S. submarine).
And a World record still held to this day
A destroyer ship built and launched in less than 1 month. the Mare Island Naval Shipyard holds this shipbuilding speed record for a destroyer that still stands, launching the USS Ward, in just 17 1⁄2 days in May–June 1918. She fired the first American shot in World War II, when she engaged a Japanese submarine before the attack on Pearl Harbor, and successfully sank her opponent.
Today the spirit of servicing and repairing ships lives on through the hard working people at Mare Island Dry Dock, LLC. and the history of the brave men and women who defended our Nation and helped define the legacy of Mare Island can be found at the Mare Island Museum as well as the Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum.
We’re proud of Mare Island and its History and look forward to what development it has in store!

Mare Island Welcomes USS Emory S Land
For the first time since the Navy closed the shipyards in 1996, an active, fully crewed ship sailed to Mare Island. John Ramos reports. (5-31-18)
Abandoned Military Base/ Decommissioned Mare Island Naval Shipyard
Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #173!
Exploring a very creepy abandoned/decommissioned naval shipyard and military base on an island in the middle of the San Francisco Bay. Though the island is cluttered with abandoned warehouses and apartment buildings rotting away in the dank, damp marshes of the northeast bay, and despite the fact that part of this creepy island has been designated a toxic Superfund site (thanks to the Navy dumping lead batteries, munitions, oil and asbestos into a landfill in the marsh)...real estate in the Bay Area is so bonkers that even this toxic sump is worth a FORTUNE, and developers have already started building new houses on Mare Island...right in the midst of all that creepy decay!! It's amazing...people in the Bay Area are so desperate for affordable housing that they will buy a $700,000 crackerbox on a toxic sump surrounded by creepy abandoned warehouses.

Every 15 minutes - Vallejo, California
Every 15 minutes someone in America dies of an alcohol related automobile accident.
This 11 minute video takes the viewer through the experience of being involved in an alcohol related automobile accident where two teenagers die, several others are injured, and one is arrested, booked, and then held in custody for driving under the influence.
The viewer is also taken to the hospital to witness the emergency room activity where one teenager dies and another (an athlete) is told she may be paralyzed.
In 2016, after a year and a half of planning, Vallejo Rotary, along with the help of many local agencies and sponsors, produced the Every 15 Minutes program at Jesse Bethel High School in Vallejo, California.

Vallejo, California
Vallejo is a city in Solano County, California, located in the North Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area. The population was 115,942 at the 2010 census. It is the tenth most populous city in the San Francisco Bay Area, and the largest in Solano County. Vallejo sits on the northeastern shore of San Pablo Bay. The city is named after General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, a native Californio, leading proponent of California's statehood, and one of the first members of the California State Senate; the neighboring city of Benicia is named for his wife, Francisca Benicia Carillo de Vallejo.
Vallejo is home to the Six Flags Discovery Kingdom theme park, the now-defunct Mare Island Naval Shipyard, and the regional office for Region 5 of the United States Forest Service. The colleges and universities in Vallejo are California Maritime Academy, the Vallejo Center campus of Solano Community College, and Touro University California. Ferry service runs from a terminal on Mare Island Strait to San Francisco, through the BayLink division of SolTrans.
Vallejo has twice served as the capital of the state of California: once in 1852 and again in 1853, both periods being brief.[9] The State Capitol building burned to the ground in the 1880s and the Vallejo Fire Department requested aid from the Fire Department at Mare Island Naval Shipyard. As there were no bridges at that time, the Mare Island Fire Department had to be ferried across the Napa River, arriving to find only the foundation remaining. This was the first recorded mutual aid response in the state of California.
Mare Island Naval Cemetery - A Story Uncovered
For the last couple of years I have been posting YouTube videos about mudlarking on the River Thames in London and the stories behind the finds. There are several reasons I love the act of mudlarking. One of them is the feeling of calm and solitude which I experience when Im searching. Another is the anticipation and excitement of what I might find - but I think the most important is the stories which Im able to follow up behind some of these finds. People and places can be brought back to life for a while when you find an object with a place or a person's name which links it to to the object. This has always emphasised to me how all of our stories are so important and how we all have one which we will one day leave behind. The question is, will anyone know about it? The video I am posting today is not like most of my other mudlarking videos (firstly it's not about mudlarking!). But - it is a story uncovered. A story uncovered through a name on a gravestone in the USA. It happens that over 150 years ago, one of the family members detailed his thoughts through a series of letters - which I was fortunate enough to be able to use with permission from the descendants. As far as I know, very few people know of it apart from the family. I was very inspired by this unexpected story and so would love to share it with you here. It's not mudlarking. But, it's a story from the past. You get a preview here, It's my summer holiday gift to you. I hope you enjoy it.
In January 2019 whilst visiting Vallejo, California - A friend took me to visit the Mare Island Naval Shipyard which opened in 1854 and closed in 1996. It was the the first United States Navy base established on the Pacific Ocean - and it exudes a fascinating history.
Whilst there, and quite by chance, as it is not usually open to the public without prior arrangement - we had the opportunity to visit the Mare Island Naval Cemetery - as it happened to be open that day.
The Cemetery is the Bay's oldest Naval Cemetery with burials beginning in 1856 and continuing until 1921. Most of the 900 or so graves belong to US servicemen but there are other graves belonging to their family members.
I enjoyed exploring the cemetery and took some footage which I only just looked at in July 2019 on my return to the UK. I then started to research some of the names on the headstones.
I stumbled upon the story of Adeline Coy Davids and her family and felt it was a story that needed to be told. Thank you to Thomas McFarland for allowing me to use the resources on his ancestry site - including photos and letters. What was revealed is a story of a family in the 19th century who experienced a tragic loss but a love which endures now almost 150 years through the letters of Henry S Davids - a US Naval Engineer during the mid 19th Century. His correspondence after his wife's premature death to her parents expresses not only his grief and anxiety for his 3 year old daughter, but his desire to create a lasting memorial to Adeline Coy Davids in the form of a gravestone in the Mare Island Cemetery which would always be cared for.
This is particularly poignant now as the Mare Island Naval Cemetery is somewhat in a state of disrepair.
Having said that, although the Naval Cemetery is currently in a state of disrepair due in part to the closure of the actual Mare Island Naval shipyard - and lack of funds and resources for its upkeep, it exudes a feeling of peace and many stories.
At the time of writing, in July 2019, a bill has been passed to provide much needed funds for its repair and upkeep.
I do hope that in time more people can go to visit this beautiful cemetery and pay their respects to the many servicemen and others for whom Mare Island Naval Cemetery is their final resting place.
