Mareeba: Australia's Springfield. Emily Owens. 2005. Documentary.
Format: Digital Video / Sound: Stereo / Aspect Ratio: 16:9
Producer: Rob Henning
Mareeba, an outback town two hours north of Cairns, was once famous for its thriving tobacco-farming business. Since the industry's closure, Mareeba boasts having the only pub between Cairns and the Gulf of Carpentaria, a feature that has attracted many Indigenous communities from dry areas to settle in town. Youth unrest and violence are making Mareeba statistically one of the most dangerous towns in Australia. This film explores the resident's views of their town's identity crisis and their differing solutions to fix this problem.
‘Mareeba: Australia’s Springfield’ was Owen’s graduate short film, made whilst she was studying at VCA Film and Television, which is now a part of The University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Fine Arts and Music.
This film is released as part of the VCA Film and Television Digital Archive Project, a living audio-visual record of student short films that date back to 1966. The films in the collection display cultural, historical, social and aesthetic significance. They are part of a widespread research, pedagogy and engagement digital archive project aimed at preserving and showcasing this important part of our Australian moving image history.

On the road to Mareeba Queensland
Continued on into the Atherton Tablelands after savvouring the delights of Kuranda. Next stop Mareeba home to the annual Rodeo that attracted visitors from far flung places.
Let's Take a Look at Mareeba in Far North Queensland
Mareeba, located on the Atherton Tableland in Far North Queensland, Australia, is 417 meters (1,368 ft) above sea level.
Prior to European settlement, the area around Mareeba was inhabited by the Muluridji people.
On 26 May 1875, James Venture Mulligan became the first European officially to see the future site of Mareeba. It was first settled in 1877 by John Atherton, who arrived with cattle at Emerald End, which is just north of the town today. Mareeba quickly became a busy coach stop for Cobb & Co on the road from Port Douglas to Herberton. When the railway arrived in 1893, Mareeba grew into a busy town.
Numerous crops are grown throughout Mareeba Shire, including avocados, mangoes, lychees, longans, sugar cane, cashews, macadamias, bananas, pineapples, tea tree oil, coffee, and a variety of vegetables and tropical fruits. Poultry and cattle are also common. Tobacco was once the main grown crop of the local economy, but is no longer grown within the Mareeba shire. According to the 2016 census, Mareeba includes the largest Italian Australian community of any suburb in Queensland, numbering 1,608 individuals and making up 10.8% of the town's population.
Mareeba boasts that the sun shines 300 days a year.

mareeba -- a nostalgic visit
Over 40 years ago (in 1967/68, in fact) my Army mate Rod Ashfield and I travelled the 2000+km by car from our Army base to his home town, Mareeba, for the Christmas break. I returned to Mareeba briefly in May 2009 and shot and made this brief video for my (still great mate) Rod who now lives on the opposite side of the continent, in Perth, WA. Hope you enjoy it mate!

LQQK! At Mareeba, Australia TODAY
Jesus told His Bride to WATCH AND PRAY ALWAYS, THAT YOU MAY BE ACCOUNTED WORTHY TO ESCAPE ALL THAT MUST COME TO PASS. (Luke 21:36) regarding the Great Tribulation. If you're waking up at 3am, that's the time of the 4th watch of the night. The watches on the wall would start at 6pm and each is 3 hours long. So, 6pm-9pm, 9pm-12pam, 12am-3am and 3am-6am.
Jesus's signs in the heavens (Luke 21:11) to His Bride are and have been, (for about 10 years), being seen around the world in the Sun, Moon and Stars ( my profile pic just one of them), (Luke 21:25-26), these are parts of God's Galaxy. Jesus is going to be taking His Bride our of the earth like a THIEF in the night soon. The World and the Chyrch are about to be robbed of the TRUE CHURCH- THE BRIDE- VERY SOON.
Mareeba QLD to Blackwood SA
I took all these pics whilst driving our Prius about 3000kms in January 2011 from Far North Queensland to our home in Blackwood, South Australia. This was just after the floods - if you look closely you can see one water crossing. Most of the pics were taken with a Nokia N8. The music is an improvised original from the Zoom H4 which I had made earlier.
