Margaret Island (Margit-sziget) is a 2.5 [km] long island in the middle of the Danube in central Budapest, Hungary. The island is mostly covered by landscape parks, and is a popular recreational area. Its medieval ruins are reminders of its importance in the Middle Ages as a religious center. In the Middle Ages, Margaret Island was called the Island of the Rabbits. The island received its current name after Saint Margaret (1242--1270), the daughter of King Béla IV, who lived in the Dominican convent on the island. King Béla IV vowed to raise his daughter as a nun if Hungary survived the Mongol invasion. Ruins of this 13th century Dominican church and convent can still be seen.
Margaret Island / Margitsziget - the highlights in 4K
In the Danube River, between Buda and Pest, verdant Margaret Island is a tranquil getaway within the city. Pedestrian promenades navigate around parkland, an art nouveau water tower, the ruins of a 13th-century Dominican convent, a musical fountain and a small zoo. Other attractions include jogging tracks, thermal spas and swimming pools. Summertime brings pop-up bars and restaurants, as well as live music.

Earlier this week I went exploring Margaret Island in Budapest, Hungary The island is a huge open space for leisure, including cycling, running, or sat reading in the huge parkland. There's a mini zoo, water park, sports stadium and music venue. The island is 1.5 miles long and 0.5 miles wide. Hope you enjoyed the video.

Join me for a walk in one of the more recreational areas of Budapest known as Margit Island.

My final video in the Budapest area. We start this episode at the Great Market Hall on the Pest side of the Danube. You cannot miss this nineteenth-century market hall if you like trying local food, shopping for souvenirs or if you are, like me, an admirer of architecture. We then cross the Danube and climb the Gellért Hill. The slopes are a nice getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city, and the tourist-infested summit provides great views of Budapest and beyond. We finish this episode on Margaret Island (Margitsziget).

Hotel Review: Danubius Grand Hotel Margitsziget, Budapest, Hungary - August 2018.
I stopped at the Danubius Grand Hotel Margitsziget for a week in August 2018. Two of us stayed in one room on a bed and breakfast basis, this was a package from Jet2CityBreaks, which is a subsidiary of Jet2Holidays a part of Jet2.com. The package included return flights from Leeds Bradford Airport plus 22kg hold luggage (each), It cost a total of £1,285 for two people (so £642.50 each), which worked out MUCH cheaper, than booking the flights and hotels separately.
The hotel is located on Margaret Island, which is actually a bit of an oasis of tranquillity in what is an extremely large and busy city. As we were there for a week, we had alternate 'city' and 'island' days. On city days we explored the MANY sites that Budapest has to offer, on island days we used the facilities at the sister hotel next door to the Danubius Grand.
The sister hotel is called the Danubius Health Spa Resort Margitsziget, and is where all of the gym, swimming and wellness facilities are located. It was really lovely to be able to sunbathe and swim outside there in 30 degree heat.
The hotels are approximately 50 metres apart. You can get from one to the other either by walking outside, or using an underground tunnel.
The Danubius Grand Hotel is a very traditional Hungarian hotel, decorated in a classical style, with muted and dark colous and ornate antique style furnishings. This is not a 'modern' hotel, so if you are looking for a Novotel / Holiday Inn / Radisson Blu experience, this hotel might not be for you. Personally speaking, I found it quite charming, and I'm sure that many visitors would appreciate its old-worldliness.
The bedroom was large with a balcony, the bed was very large, a super-king, there was ample storage and a very modern and newly refurbished bathroom.
The breakfast buffet was slightly varied each day and was very good, it had hot and cold options, a combination of international and Hungarian cuisine.
All of the staff in the hotel that I encountered gave great customer service and were very friendly.
This film features views of the hotel exterior, the lobby, reception, lounge, lift / elevator, corridors, a detailed room inspection of room 272, the restaurant, breakfast buffet, underground tunnel, and the health, wellness, swimming and gym facilities at the Danubius spa Hotel.
