Margaret Mahy Family Playground, Christchurch, New Zealand
One of the best playgrounds in the world!
Come and Play
This spectacular all-ages, all-abilities playground is named after one of Canterbury's much-loved authors, Margaret Mahy. The unique design also reflects the Canterbury Plains and Port Hills environment. It is also the largest playground in the Southern Hemisphere with more being added soon including BBQ areas.
Plenty of thought and planning has gone into making the playground an amazing place for all. Here's what you'll find:
- Cool playground equipment, like the 4 metre wide-slide and double flying fox.
- Sand play, swings, rockers and a crawl tunnel for toddlers.
- Water cannons, sprinklers and a splash pad with controllable jets.
- Separate activity zones for different age groups.
- Food and beverage retailers - Rollickin' Gelato, Berry Healthy Real Fruit Ice Cream, Mo Coffee and Bueno Cantina.
- Lawn picnic areas and seating.
- Public toilet, change facilities and shade canopy.
- And plenty more to discover!
The Playground is free to visit and open all day everyday. There is a free car park at 177 Armagh Street.

Margaret Mahy Family Playground Christchurch New Zealand After Earthquake
Discover the incredible Margaret Mahy Family Playground, which has sprouted up at 177 Armagh St, Christchurch Central, Christchurch 8011 for the families of Christchurch after the devastating earthquakes of 2011.
This wonderful park features water fun, climbing, bouncing, food, shade and just hours of sheer fun, and the cost is fantastic - FREE.
Now the concrete gets a little hot in summer, as does the metal slides, so remember a pair of jandals and some sunscreen or hat, AND remember there will be some water fun around the area, so wear some comfy clothes that will cop a wee bit of splashing.
Regarding Food, there are a few vans that love to set up on the skirts near the water park area, and regarding shade, there is a little, but I would recommend a hat and sunscreen. On the day we were there, we copped bit of a breeze, but we found a little hedge near the water park area, and snuggled in while the kids screamed, splashed and had a ball.
Toilets? Tonnes, and they are ultra modern, super tidy, easy to use, and almost hands free. When you enter, you get told you have 10 minutes to do your deed, and if you're not done by then, the door automatically unlocks and the sign says VACANT!! How funny. The toilet flushes automatically once you wash your hands, and of course getting soap, water and hand drying hot air is all hands free. The only thing you touch is the door open button, the TP and yourself.
