Why we LOVE South West Australia - Busselton & Margaret River Ep.72
We trekked down to Busselton and settled ourselves into a van park for 2 nights. Our good mates Blaine & Shenaid from Camper Australis had made some last minute plans to come join us for the weekend. We explored the surrounds, visited some breweries, checked out some markets and fished off the iconic Busselton jetty.
After visiting Dunsborough and the surrounds, we really loved the atmosphere here. This has been the first place on our trip, we have both said we could live here. Eagle bay and Garnet Rocks took our breath away and are up there with some of our favourite beaches! Amz couldn’t resisit not visiting Simmo’s ice-creamery. She was in heaven trying to choose a flavour from their 40+ flavour range.
We are starting to get a taste of this south west, and understanding why people rave about it. Its still early days, but so far we are loving our time down here and can’t wait to see more. Next stop Margaret River through to Pemberton and surrounds.
Margaret River & surrounds
After leaving Busselton, we headed south into the Margaret River region. Setting ourselves up at ‘The Olive Farm’, a low cost campsite. You need to be self contained and all sites are unpowered at $15 a night (for 2 people). We found this a great spot to base ourselves while exploring all the surrounds.
For our first day we headed to Gracetown for a swim. The local beach had a pontoon anchored out in the water, so swam out did some flips between our sun baking. Working up quite the appetite and thirst, that we stopped by at the Cheeky Monkey for lunch. We then had a leisurely stroll through the town of Cowaramup which is only a small town, but covered in dairy cow sculptures. Rusty was a little unsure as we walked by them.
Prevelly was a nice sleepy town. Kurt had a fish at the River mouth and from the rocks just south of Gnarabup beach. We had a coffee at the White Elephant Cafe, which overlooked Gnarabup beach and boat ramp. It was quite a busy little spot with plenty of people coming and going, and this was midweek. While in Prevelly we also found a cool little cave. A good old ‘Wikicamps’ special, told us where to park and where the track was to reach it.
On another day, we also visited Yallingup to see all the sights around the area. We checked out Rabbits beach, Torpedo rock, spotted dolphins at Smiths beach and walked a little bit of the cape to cape track. The Injidup Natural spa was definitely amazing to see. A natural spa from the waves of the ocean, crushing over rocks which trickle down like a waterfall, giving a natural spa feel. Be sure to visit on high tide so you can see the full ‘spa effect’. c
A total of nine nights we spent at the Olive Farm, as it was so nice and relaxing. Each site had be designed so that you wouldn’t directly see your neighbours. It had a beautiful walk down to the river, through the forest with signs identifying each tree species. Just down the road was the Colonial Brewing Company, which does $10 pizzas every Friday night. We can confirm both pizzas and beers were delicious.
Overall we ate well, saw the sights, got a real feel for the area and had a lovely time in Margaret River and surrounds.
Next stop Augusta!

Leeuwin Estate, Margaret River, Western Australia
One of the founding wineries of the Margaret River region, in Western Australia's extraordinary South West, Leeuwin Estate produced its first commercial vintage in 1979. The family owned business has been created around fine wine, fine food and the arts, and its founding philosophy is to make world-class wine. Simone Furlong tells us their story.
In the lead up to Margaret River Gourmet Escape 2012, a four-day food and wine festival held in WA's South West from November 22 to 25, Tourism Western Australia uncovered some of the people who call the region home, and who are behind the produce that the region is so well known for.
Thanks to its Mediterranean climate and rich fertile soils, WA's South West has a reputation for producing world-class food and wine. The area is also well known for its pristine beaches, enviable surf breaks, ancient tall timber forests and an abundance of flora and fauna.

Wine Touring in Margaret River, Western Australia
Margaret River WA was originally a chilled out surfie town, but has evolved into the ultimate smorgasbord of fine wine, good food and spectacular scenery -- just a three-and-a-half hour drive south of Perth. No trip to Western Australia is complete without a pit stop at Margaret River.
There's a fine supply of world-class wineries, boutique breweries, and restaurants overlooking sweeping vineyards and surf breaks.
The wine is definitely top notch - the region produces less than one per cent of Australian wine, but wait for it - over 15 per cent of the country's premium wine.
And with 60 plus wineries to choose from, you won't be stuck for choice.
One of the best ways to experience the wine that Margaret River has to offer is on a tour. This video features a tour with the The Margaret River Discovery Company hosted by expert local guide Sean Blocksidge. Armed with a luxury 4WD plus a boat he plots a journey that takes you behind the tourist facade, away from the masses to discover people and places you won't find on your own.
The aim is to give the traveller the most memorable wine touring experience ever, and in the process, really experience the richness and diversity of this unique corner of the world.
MARGARET RIVER WA TRAVEL
MARGARET RIVER WA TRAVEL
Margaret River is a small town south of Perth in western Australia, known for its craft breweries, boutiques and surrounding wineries. Beaches and surf breaks line the nearby coast, whose waters host migratory whales from June to November. Stretching between 2 lighthouses north and south of the town, the long-distance Cape to Cape Track fringes the limestone caves and sea cliffs of Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park.

Can you believe you can camp like this in the Margaret River - E36
Welcome back to another episode guys!
This week we leave our cam site at Lake Jasper and head towards The Margaret River.
Our first stop is Jewel Cave, the most grand cave in all of Australia, A quick tour throughout then leads us onto the Margaret River region. Our first spot is Vase Felix and man we're we impressed. Well maybe Brad wasn't.
Our next stop was Cheeky Monkey which has a winery and brewery in the one spot. This made Brad pretty happy. And then it was time to find a camp spot - in the dark. The few wine tastings that Holly had had didn't help the ease with setting up camp that night.
The next day we checked out some natural spa's and then hit up a few wineries and breweries. Its fair to say we found camp again in the dark that night because we all got a little carried away with the time...
And that's it... now we say goodbye to our friends Brad & Lauren and fly back to NSW ourselves for 2 weeks.
