Why we LOVE South West Australia - Busselton & Margaret River Ep.72
We trekked down to Busselton and settled ourselves into a van park for 2 nights. Our good mates Blaine & Shenaid from Camper Australis had made some last minute plans to come join us for the weekend. We explored the surrounds, visited some breweries, checked out some markets and fished off the iconic Busselton jetty.
After visiting Dunsborough and the surrounds, we really loved the atmosphere here. This has been the first place on our trip, we have both said we could live here. Eagle bay and Garnet Rocks took our breath away and are up there with some of our favourite beaches! Amz couldn’t resisit not visiting Simmo’s ice-creamery. She was in heaven trying to choose a flavour from their 40+ flavour range.
We are starting to get a taste of this south west, and understanding why people rave about it. Its still early days, but so far we are loving our time down here and can’t wait to see more. Next stop Margaret River through to Pemberton and surrounds.
Margaret River & surrounds
After leaving Busselton, we headed south into the Margaret River region. Setting ourselves up at ‘The Olive Farm’, a low cost campsite. You need to be self contained and all sites are unpowered at $15 a night (for 2 people). We found this a great spot to base ourselves while exploring all the surrounds.
For our first day we headed to Gracetown for a swim. The local beach had a pontoon anchored out in the water, so swam out did some flips between our sun baking. Working up quite the appetite and thirst, that we stopped by at the Cheeky Monkey for lunch. We then had a leisurely stroll through the town of Cowaramup which is only a small town, but covered in dairy cow sculptures. Rusty was a little unsure as we walked by them.
Prevelly was a nice sleepy town. Kurt had a fish at the River mouth and from the rocks just south of Gnarabup beach. We had a coffee at the White Elephant Cafe, which overlooked Gnarabup beach and boat ramp. It was quite a busy little spot with plenty of people coming and going, and this was midweek. While in Prevelly we also found a cool little cave. A good old ‘Wikicamps’ special, told us where to park and where the track was to reach it.
On another day, we also visited Yallingup to see all the sights around the area. We checked out Rabbits beach, Torpedo rock, spotted dolphins at Smiths beach and walked a little bit of the cape to cape track. The Injidup Natural spa was definitely amazing to see. A natural spa from the waves of the ocean, crushing over rocks which trickle down like a waterfall, giving a natural spa feel. Be sure to visit on high tide so you can see the full ‘spa effect’. c
A total of nine nights we spent at the Olive Farm, as it was so nice and relaxing. Each site had be designed so that you wouldn’t directly see your neighbours. It had a beautiful walk down to the river, through the forest with signs identifying each tree species. Just down the road was the Colonial Brewing Company, which does $10 pizzas every Friday night. We can confirm both pizzas and beers were delicious.
Overall we ate well, saw the sights, got a real feel for the area and had a lovely time in Margaret River and surrounds.
Next stop Augusta!

Can you believe that this alien landscape is just a day trip from Perth? | Just Another Day in WA
Take a day trip from Perth to the other-worldly landscape of the Pinnacles Desert in Nambung National Park. Following the Indian Ocean Drive, you can stop to meet friendly kangaroos, try sandboarding and taste Cervantes’ famous seafood delicacy. In just an hour and a half you’ll be right in the middle of thousands of limestone spires formed over millions of years.
The Pinnacles' location far from night sky-obscuring city lights makes it an excellent base for stargazing. If you’re travelling between July and October, you’ll also see Western Australia in full colour, as the coastal landscapes are filled with the blooms of spring wildflowers.

Would you Climb this? (NOT SAFE) Augusta to Northcliffe Ep.73
We opted to drive from Margaret River down to Augusta for a night. We checked in at the Flinders Bay van park around 11am. Setup, settled ourselves in and had some lunch before setting off for some afternoon adventures.
The following day, the weather was predicted to rain, so we wanted to make the most of the sunshine. We took off south and visited the old water wheel along with the beach spots around Leeuwin national park. We then doubled backed and headed north, checking out Cosy Corner, Hamelin Bay, Boranup Lookout and finished up with a relaxing drive through the Boranup Forest.
Happy with our afternoon expedition, the following day we drove to Northcliffe and set up at Sids Campground. We nabbed the last available powered site, which was great. At only $20 a night for power, this is one of the cheapest (powered) campgrounds we have stayed at.
From Sids, we ventured up to Manjimup to visit the King Jarrah tree. We also passed some amazing chainsaw sculptures which were just sitting in someones front yard. After leaving Manjimup, heading to Pemberton we stopped into the Diamond Tree! Amz had decided she wanted to climb all 3 in the area. She made it to the top no problems at all. Kurts not really a fan of heights so he waited with Rusty on the ground.
Just as we got to Pemberton, it started raining, so we grabbed a snack from the bakery and headed back to camp. It then rained all day the following day, which was a good excuse to have a chill day in the van. When the rain eventually cleared we ventured out for a more adventures.
We headed to the Dave Bicentennial Tree, the tallest of the 3 tree climbs. After Amz had conquered that tree, we headed up to Beedelup Falls. We walked the little circuit around the falls and visited the walk through tree. We had heard Yeagarup Dunes was a good spot to see, so we headed into Warren National Park. Kurt let the tires down and we had some fun driving on the dunes. #funfact Yeagarup sand dunes are one of largest mobile sand dunes in the southern hemisphere - making their way inland 4m each year.
After some fun on the dunes, we headed back into Pemberton, as Amz wanted to climb the Gloucester tree to finish off the trio of tree climbs. What an eventful morning making it back to camp just after lunch time.
Hearing good things about Windy Harbour, we decided to go check it out the following day. On the drive in we decided to stretch our legs and climb Mt Chudalup, a small 1.2km hike to the summit. The views up top were an amazing 360degree views of the surrounds. Well worth the hike if you’re in the area.
We continued onto Windy Harbour where we checked out all the lookouts and beaches. The ‘cliff window’ lookout was cool and only a short 200m walk from the carpark. When we headed down to see Cathedral rock, we noticed recent fire damage to the area. A local happened to be driving past and started telling us about the ‘incident’.
The local volunteer sea rescue group were doing a public flare demo, when the wind took a spark, which resulted in the start of a bushfire. The locals residents were quite lucky the service road stopped it from crossing and that the firefighters could get it under control #oops
Next stop Walpole to Boat Harbour.

More information about the video content bellow:
1. If WA were to be a country in its own right, it would be in the world’s top 10 for size. Western Australia is Australia's largest state, with a total land area of 2,529,875 square kilometres (976,790 sq mi), and the second-largest country subdivision in the world, surpassed only by Russia's Sakha Republic. The state has about 2.6 million inhabitants – around 11% of the national total – of whom the vast majority (92%) live in the south-west corner, 73% of the population living in the Perth area, leaving the remainder of the state sparsely populated.
2. In 1933, Western Australians voted overwhelmingly to secede from the Commonwealth. While 68 percent of people voted for secession, the Commonwealth refused the request and WA remained part of Australia.
3. Perth (WA’s capital) is the most isolated city in the world, with its closest city being Adelaide and that’s over 2,200 km away. Perth is closer to Singapore and Jakarta than it is to Canberra.
4. Madness, mutiny and murder. It might sound like the plot of an implausible Hollywood blockbuster, but the story of the Batavia is frighteningly real. In 1629, the ship struck a reef 40 kilometres off the coast of WA – and that’s where the terrible tale began.
5. Perth’s very own Kings Park is the largest city park in the world. Yes, at 400ha (988 acres) it is larger than Central Park in New York . Here you can wander and take in spectacular views of the Swan River, overlooking Elizabeth Quay, the city skyline and Darling Ranges. There are bush trails, manicured gardens and Australia’s largest display of wildflowers throughout the Botanic Gardens.
6. The Pinnacles is two hours north of Perth in the Nambung National Park. There you will see the ancient desert sculptures, where the desert landscape is transformed with yellow limestone formations up to 5 metres tall rising out of the sand dunes.
7. Western Australia has its fair share of natural resources and a booming mining industry. Located in the remote Kimberley region is Argyle Diamond Mine, the largest diamond producer in the world (by volume) and the only known significant source of pink and red diamonds. The Kimberley coast is also home to Australia’s largest producer of pearls. Two of the world’s largest producers of gold are located in Western Australia. The largest open cut mine until 2016 is the Super Pit at Kalgoorlie gold mine. The oblong pit is 3.5km long and 1.5km wide but a massive 570 metres deep making it visible from space. No wonder Perth is home to the highest per capita of self made millionaires.
