Surfing at Margaret River, Australia -- featuring Kelly Slater
Just one look at the names who have cut through the waves at Margaret River in recent times makes you realise that the swells there are truly world class. Surfing legend Kelly Slater dropped in on the Western Australia location in 2011 to take part in the Association of Surfing Professionals Prime Rated Telstra Drug Aware Pro and he was quick to enthuse about the location:
Margaret [River] is such a great spot because it's clean & refreshing with hundreds of great waves and lots of great food. You can't escape the wineries...you'd be hard pressed not to do that while you are here!
There are more than 40 places to surf in Margaret River with conditions ranging from powerful reef breaks to fun beach breaks.
While you're putting on your wetsuit, watch the locals pull in to perfect barrels and make radical 'snaps' off the top. The wave itself is a super steep take off, through a round bowl section into some nice walling cutback faces as the wave peels through towards the beach. It's one that will leave your heart pounding and can make the whole trip worth it.
If you aren't an experienced boarder then help can be found at Josh Palmateer's Surf Academy. The former pro-surfer introduced surf coaching to Margaret River in 1994, starting up the first private surf school in Western Australia. In 1995 Josh launched his own Surf Academy. It now runs classes in Margaret River and Mandurah from November to May, and travels to Broome in the off-season from July to October.
He may not be able to get you surfing like Kelly Slater, but the adrenalin rush will more than compensate!

Why we LOVE South West Australia - Busselton & Margaret River Ep.72
We trekked down to Busselton and settled ourselves into a van park for 2 nights. Our good mates Blaine & Shenaid from Camper Australis had made some last minute plans to come join us for the weekend. We explored the surrounds, visited some breweries, checked out some markets and fished off the iconic Busselton jetty.
After visiting Dunsborough and the surrounds, we really loved the atmosphere here. This has been the first place on our trip, we have both said we could live here. Eagle bay and Garnet Rocks took our breath away and are up there with some of our favourite beaches! Amz couldn’t resisit not visiting Simmo’s ice-creamery. She was in heaven trying to choose a flavour from their 40+ flavour range.
We are starting to get a taste of this south west, and understanding why people rave about it. Its still early days, but so far we are loving our time down here and can’t wait to see more. Next stop Margaret River through to Pemberton and surrounds.
Margaret River & surrounds
After leaving Busselton, we headed south into the Margaret River region. Setting ourselves up at ‘The Olive Farm’, a low cost campsite. You need to be self contained and all sites are unpowered at $15 a night (for 2 people). We found this a great spot to base ourselves while exploring all the surrounds.
For our first day we headed to Gracetown for a swim. The local beach had a pontoon anchored out in the water, so swam out did some flips between our sun baking. Working up quite the appetite and thirst, that we stopped by at the Cheeky Monkey for lunch. We then had a leisurely stroll through the town of Cowaramup which is only a small town, but covered in dairy cow sculptures. Rusty was a little unsure as we walked by them.
Prevelly was a nice sleepy town. Kurt had a fish at the River mouth and from the rocks just south of Gnarabup beach. We had a coffee at the White Elephant Cafe, which overlooked Gnarabup beach and boat ramp. It was quite a busy little spot with plenty of people coming and going, and this was midweek. While in Prevelly we also found a cool little cave. A good old ‘Wikicamps’ special, told us where to park and where the track was to reach it.
On another day, we also visited Yallingup to see all the sights around the area. We checked out Rabbits beach, Torpedo rock, spotted dolphins at Smiths beach and walked a little bit of the cape to cape track. The Injidup Natural spa was definitely amazing to see. A natural spa from the waves of the ocean, crushing over rocks which trickle down like a waterfall, giving a natural spa feel. Be sure to visit on high tide so you can see the full ‘spa effect’. c
A total of nine nights we spent at the Olive Farm, as it was so nice and relaxing. Each site had be designed so that you wouldn’t directly see your neighbours. It had a beautiful walk down to the river, through the forest with signs identifying each tree species. Just down the road was the Colonial Brewing Company, which does $10 pizzas every Friday night. We can confirm both pizzas and beers were delicious.
Overall we ate well, saw the sights, got a real feel for the area and had a lovely time in Margaret River and surrounds.
Next stop Augusta!
