VOLCANO-BOARDING in Leon
The only place in the world where you can slide down an active volcano is in Leon, Nicaragua. This just has to be on your bucket list as it's just pure adrenaline and worthy of being a tale to tell your grandkids.
We also pound the city streets to seek the local culture, sample some good eats and check out the nightlife in a nearby party hostel. In between these activities, we of course found time to re-charge by kicking back and enjoying in our downtime.
*Some footage were shot in 4K! How awesome is that?

Masaya Volcano - is in the province of Masaya. Masaya Volcano National park elevation is 635 meters above sea level measured from the extinct cone of San Fernando where views of the lake valley are priceless. Mombacho Volcano is a natural reserve founded in 1999 .The Mombacho Volcano is an evergreen tropical cloud forest characterized by a high incidence of low-level cloud cover You can hike at Mombacho Volcano and do the Mombacho canopy tour. Cerro Negro Volcano - is in the province of León and located in the middle of the impressive Maribios Volcano Range. At just 450 meters, little and very active Cerro Negro deceives those who underestimate it ferocity.
Nicaragua is becoming a better known as the surfing destination, yet still has much smaller crowds compared to Costa Rica and Mexico. Due to the Lake Nicaragua effect, the wind blows offshore here 330 days per year!! With solid S swells and some of the best points, rock reefs and sandbars in Central America this is a recipe for perfection. Surfing in Nicaragua remains optimal all day long, with the tides being your main deciding factor of when to paddle out. The best time for surfing in Nicaragua is April thru early December, which is when the most south swells hit Nicaragua's Pacific coast.

FAST Volcano Boarding in Leon, Nicaragua with Bigfoot Hostel
$31 dollars and matching tank tops later, we were ready to fling ourselves down the side of Nicaragua's youngest and most active volcano - Cerro Negro, which lies just outside of colonial Leon. It's the only place in the world you can slide down the side of a still active volcano, and the smoking crater, 42° slope and 500 meter descent sounded like too good of a time to turn down. After an hour-long trek with 30 soon to be friends and fellow boarders, we caught some incredible views of the Cordillera de los Maribios mountain range and dawned our orange jumpsuits and goggles. The rest is better experienced than explained - check it out with Pablo's awesome gopro footage, and watch as our bus mates fly and fall down the slope as well. We'll be working on some more information on prices, tour options, and our experience to add to the tour section of TaprootTravel.com but for now feel free to leave any questions or comments below! xxEnjoy!xx - Chelsey & Pablo

Cerro Negro is a volcano in the Cordillera de los Maribios mountain range in Nicaragua, about 10km from the village of Malpaisillo. It is a very new volcano, the youngest in Central America, having first appeared in April 1850. It consists of a gravelly cinder cone, which contrasts greatly with the surrounding verdant hillsides, and gives rise to its name, which means Black Hill.

Both peaceful beaches are situated along the shores of the Pacific Ocean in the region of Leon. Poneloya and Las Peñitas are easily reached from the university town of Leon in less than
half hour, through a new paved road built by the government of the United States under the program “Millennium Challenge Corporation”. The surrounding areas of Poneloya and Las
Peñitas as well as the strip of land from Leon is cultivated with lots of agricultural crops such as peanuts, sugarcane, sesame seeds, corn, bananas and sorghum. On clear days amazing
views to the Maribios volcanic chain can be enjoyed from the main road. Those two spots, just separated from a rocky hill, are preferred places for the “leoneses” on weekends. These
serene beaches during most of the year come into hectic activities through Easter and New Year celebrations, where thousands of Nicaraguan families organize traditional journeys to
these sites. The fishing villages of Poneloya and Las Peñitas are lined with summer vacation homes, small lodges and some restaurants. Their wide and long beaches are perfect for
enjoying sunbathes away from crowds. Excursions to wildlife reserves like “Isla Juan Venado” can be organized from here. This natural reserve is only few minutes away from Las
Peñitas, where nature lovers can have the opportunity to see alligators, birds, all different types of plants and mangroves. Also Las Peñitas offers good opportunities for surfing,
kayaking and biking. While either exploring or vacationing around these two beaches, one cannot miss the chance to try the fresh seafood of some local restaurants. Succulent whole
fried red snapper fish in tomato sauce, grilled sea bass filet or grilled shrimp in garlic sauce are just some of the alluring choices to order.Take a bus from the Terminal Poneloya (at
Mercadito Sutiava) in León. In half an hour, the bus will take you first to Poneloya. It stops at the end of the small village, waits for around 15 minutes as people get in and out, and
then makes a U-turn in order to continue to Las Peñitas. You can also get off at stops along the way, too.
