Lord Howe Island Adventure Challenge
Lord Howe Island is a gem of the natural world. Its dramatic scenery, lush subtropical forests, rare flora and fauna, pristine beaches and colourful marine life are breathtaking and unique. Sir David Attenborough once wrote that Lord Howe is “so extraordinary it is almost unbelievable… Few islands, surely, can be so accessible, so remarkable, yet so unspoilt.”
Lord Howe is genuine wilderness. Unlike most parts of the world, the island was first settled in the 1840’s and has had minimal human impact. Many parts of the island are rarely visited or remain unvisited. The vast populations of land and sea birds have no predators, and with a loud yell or hand clap, will hover above your head to investigate the sound. Some will land at your feet and appear hypnotised. It’s a unique experience.
Offshore, Lord Howe Island is surrounded by the southernmost coral reef in the world, and has a unique combination of tropical, subtropical and temperate marine life. There are over 90 coral and 500 fish species.
In recognition of its scenic beauty and biodiversity, Lord Howe was inscribed as a World Heritage site in 1982. The list includes Uluru, Kakadu, Fraser Island and the Great Barrier Reef. More recently, National Geographic named Lord Howe as one of its 'Places of a Lifetime'.
Access to the best parts of Lord Howe Island requires a local guide, a boat, and a bit of determination. Only then can you discover Lord Howe’s true backcountry wilderness. The Adventure Challenge Week combines the experience of local park rangers and scientists to guide you to some of the island's most amazing places, including the summit of Mt Gower and beyond. After a hard and memorable day, you’ll return to Pinetrees for a hot shower, cold beer, exceptional 4 course dinner, great wine and comfortable bed. You may find the perfect balance between physical exercise, mental stimulation, social interaction and, well, some of life’s more enjoyable treats. And there’s no mobile phone coverage on Lord Howe!
The Adventure Challenge Week is for serious backcountry adventurers who thrive on ‘exposure’, ‘missions’ and ‘epics’ (you’ll know who you are). You must have a strong level of fitness and be prepared to walk off-track in steep backcountry terrain. We'll be led by former park ranger and mountain guide, Dean Hiscox, from Lord Howe Environmental Tours, and supported by former United Nations ecologist, Luke Hanson, from Pinetrees Lodge. We've had great reviews in the media, including a feature article in Great Walks Magazine and a feature article in the Sydney Morning Herald (by Louise Southerden, the 2013 Australian Travel Writer of the Year).
The Adventure Challenge Week runs from 12-16 October 2015. Group size is limited to 10 people with a guest to guide ratio of 5:1. You must have a high level of fitness, and as a guide, be able to swim 400m in 12 minutes and walk 10km in 3 hours. Pinetrees reserves the right to decline your participation if your fitness level is below the group standard. Package rates start from $1890 per person (twin share). Please contact us for further details or to make a booking. More details at pinetrees.com.au

Just 11 km long and 2 km wide, two thirds of its land mass is covered by Banyan, Pandanus and native Kentia Palm forests, its many perfect beaches are safe, pristine and tranquil.

Ocean Swimming with Trevor Hendy
Imagine doing an ocean swim in pristine subtropical waters over 90 species of coral and 500 species of fish? Imagine having the chance to swim every day for a week? Imagine sharing the experience with 15 ocean swimmers, including Australia’s most famous Ironman, Trevor Hendy?
If you’re sick of that black line or the opaque water at suburban beaches, then please join our Lord Howe Island Ocean Swim Weeks from 9-13 March 2015 and 23-27 November 2015. Each day, we’ll swim 1.5 – 2km around the Lord Howe Island coastline and experience the beauty of a World Heritage marine environment. Some days we’ll swim over vibrant coral on the outer reef of the lagoon, while other days we’ll swim under 200 vertical metre cliffs or along some of the most perfect beaches in the world. You’ll see reef sharks, turtles, big schools of fish and thousands of seabirds.
At your side will be the former World and Australian Ironman Champion, Trevor Hendy. Trevor was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 1996 for his services to surf lifesaving, and was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 2000. Along the way, he won medals at the World Championships in kayaking and won the Uncle Toby’s Super Series four times. Trevor now works as a high performance coach for elite athletes and guides people from all walks of life through his Bootcamp for the Soul. During the Ocean Swim Weeks, Trevor will provide tips on technique, training and motivation, and share some experiences and insights from the world of elite sport.
When you’re not swimming, there will be plenty of time to enjoy the other activities that Lord Howe has to offer – surfing, paddle boarding, kayaking, fishing, snorkelling, diving and walking, just to name a few. And they’re all world class. In the evening, you can relax with a sunset drink on our waterfront deck and enjoy a 4 course dinner with a lovely glass of wine. Sound like the right combination of exercise, relaxation and indulgence? Did we mention our day spa?
You should plan to travel to Lord Howe on Sunday and depart on Saturday. The swims are non-competitive and can be easily completed by moderate to strong ocean swimmers. As a guide, you must be able to swim 1 km in less than 25 minutes.
Package rates start from $1990 per person twin share (March 2015 - peak season) and $1780 per person twin share (November 2015), excluding airfares and applicable taxes. Availability is limited to 15 swimmers. For more details, please go to pinetrees.com.au

Elizabeth Reef & Lord Howe Island on TAINUII
Thanks to skipper and owner of 'TAINUII' Jack Doyle, a bunch of misfits were able to go on the journey of a life time across the pacific to the remote atoll of Elizabeth Reef. Being the most southerly coral atoll in the world made for an amazing opportunity to observe some spectacular wildlife and insane fishing.
The beauty about living on a boat for 3 weeks with 7 larrikins is when it gets all too much they will still be within arms reach until the end of the adventure, so it got very interesting the more tropo we became.
For all of the fish that we kept twice as many were released. We did not waste any of the fish that we kept, feeding many mouths of friends, families and local Lord Howians. We used a cryovac machine to ensure we could enjoy our spoils once we arrived back to our suburbia lives in Sydney.
Here is a snippet of what we experienced, as you can see we made sure that we did more than just fishing and enjoyed the good times that go hand in hand.
gear of choice:
Samurai fishing rods: - XTRACTA POP 100
- Inflict 20-30lb
Gamakatsu hooks and terminal tackle
Atomic lures
....Enjoy.

If Lord Howe Island isn’t on your bucket list of places to see before you die then add it immediately.
Lord Howe Island is a place that immediately gets under your skin. As I flew into the tiny airport and I saw Mount Gower looming over an island surrounded by gorgeous blue and emerald reefs, I knew this would be a special place.
They call Lord Howe Island the Galapagos of Australia. That’s partly because of its remoteness in the world, but also because of how that isolation has created a place of unrivaled outstanding beauty.
And as if that isn’t enough to hammer home how amazing this place is, Lord Howe Island has just been voted as one of the top regions to travel to for 2020 in Lonely Planet's ‘Best in Travel’ list.
From being in the shadows of places like Hamilton Island and Magnetic Island in Australia, all of a sudden Lord Howe is front of stage in the spotlight. And here’s why.
