Sochi Seaport. Sochi, Russia
Sochi’s sea-gate is 1.5 kilometres away from the railway station. The sea terminal, which is on the official architectural landmarks list, looks like a real palace. The former Marina, now a shopping and amusement centre, was built in the mid-20th century to the design of Karo Alabian and Leonid Karlik. With its majestic colonnade, open terraces, broad stairways and arches, and its 70-metre tower with a steeple, it is quite reminiscent of St. Petersburg’s Admiralty. The central tower is adorned with a sculptural composition: the female statues represent seasons of the year, the male statues stand for the cardinal points, and the dolphins symbolize the opulence of the Black Sea coast. Following a massive rebuilding and the addition of some new buildings on the northern pier, Sochi’s passenger port is now the largest in the Black Sea region. It remains open for supersize ships all year round. Global cruise expos and regattas take place here on a regular basis.
There are two noteworthy monuments next to the port. The one in the park across from the rotunda commemorates Peter I, the emperor who expanded Russia so that it gained access to the three seas: Baltic, Azov and Black. He did not, however, build any navy on the Black Sea, like he did on the Baltic Sea. The second monument, standing in the shade of some sycamores by the southern pier, depicts the seeing-off of the main characters of Soviet cult comedy Diamond Arm on their overseas cruise. That scene was actually filmed at the Sochi port.

CMV Magellan cruise ship is a Holiday-class vessel initially operated by Carnival Cruise Line as MS Holiday. It joined CMV's fleet in Spring 2015. As former Carnival Fun Ship, Magellan still retains the distinctive funnel shape.
History - construction and ownership
The chartered by CMV 46,052-ton, 1,452-passenger cruise ship ms Magellan belongs to the Holiday-class of cruise ships. The ship was previously operated not only by Carnival but also by Iberocruceros as “MS Grand Holiday”.
A renovation was needed for the cruise ship, because of her condition and the vessel was sent to dry docks for renovation in 2003. Two years later, during the natural phenomenon Hurricane Katrina, the cruise service was temporarily interrupted in order to serve as a shelter for those suffering from the storm. After the disaster, the Grand Holiday left the Mississippi River and was sent again to dry dock for renovations. Engineers and designers worked for several weeks under changes over the propellers and the addition of new carpeting and plumbing. The Grand Holiday was transferred to Iberocruceros' fleet.
A curious fact is that as MS Grand Holiday, the vessel was chartered as a hotel ship in Port Sochi Russia during the 2014 Winter Olympics (February 5-24, 2014). As CMV Magellan, the vessel was again chartered as a hotel ship in Newport Wales (South Dock) during 2017 UEFA Champions League Final in Cardiff (June 2017).
In February 2017, Damen Shiprepair Amsterdam (part of DSC / Damen Shiprepair & Conversion), completed maintenance works on cruise ships Magellan and Marco Polo. Both vessels are currently operated by British based CMV (Cruise & Maritime Voyages), part of Global Maritime Group.
Cruise itinerary program
MS Magellan itinerary program is based on Western Europe and Baltic Sea cruises, departing from UK ports, including Dundee, Newcastle, Harwich. Magellan will operate a series of voyages to Norway and the Canary Islands and a 42-night cruise to Brazil in winter 2017-2018 from Tilbury-London.

New Russian Port for the Black Sea
Take a look at the construction of a new Port the Russian are building on the Black Sea in Adler near Sochi Russia.
Cruise liner Magellan departing from Cobh on 21/09/18.
What is the cruise ship Magellan?
The MS Magellan is a massive cruise ship currently operated by Cruise & Maritime Voyages. It boasts 10 floors and has a gross tonnage of 46,052. It measures some 222 metres in length, and its large scale is jaw-dropping: Its passenger capacity is 1,452 and its crew can run to 660 people. Despite its size, the cruise ship Magellan can achieve impressive speeds of up to 21 knots, equating to 39 kilometres per hour.
It’s a big, state-of-the-art cruiser, so you’d expect it to be brand new, right? You might be surprised to learn that it’s over 30 years old. Seriously, it is.
History of the cruise ship Magellan: 1985-present
What we know today as the MS Magellan was built in Denmark in the 1980s by Aalborg Vaerft. Its maiden voyage was way back in 1985 and in those days it was known as the MS Holiday. In the intervening decades, the ship has had quite a “life”
1985-2009: MS Holiday
From its first outing until 2009, the ship was operated by Carnival Cruise Lines. She was registered to the port of Nassau in the Bahamas. She was taken out of service for renovations in 2003, and came back better than ever. In 2005, she was taken out of service once again, this time as part of disaster relief efforts following Hurricane Katrina. The ship was used as emergency housing for victims that had been left homeless and destitute following the hurricane.
The MS Holiday continued to sail for Carnival Cruise Lines until 2009. During that time there were further renovations including a job on the plumbing and carpets. She was finally retired from Carnival Cruise Lines’ fleet and transferred to another cruise line owned by the same parent company. Fittingly, she was given a new name for this new lease of life – but she wasn’t yet the cruise ship Magellan that we know today.
2010-2014: MS Grand Holiday
Now renamed the MS Grand Holiday, the ship entered the fleet of Iberocruceros in 2010. Now registered from the port of Madeira in Portugal, her maiden voyage was on the 18th of May 2010.
Perhaps most notable during this time is the fact that the MS Grand Holiday served as a floating hotel during the 2014 Winter Olympics. From February 5th to 24th, she was anchored at Port Sochi. The future cruise ship Magellan was transformed into a floating four-star hotel for the illustrious games.
The next and most recent chapter would take place in 2015.
2015-present: MS Magellan
In the spring of 2015, the MS Grand Holiday was renamed once again and became the cruise ship Magellan. She is now operated by the British-owned Cruise & Maritime Voyages, and is once again registered out of Nassau in the Bahamas. Her maiden voyage as the MS Magellan took place on the 11th of March 2015 from the UK.

The Russian Navy’s second Project 885-M Yasen M-class multipurpose nuclear-powered attack submarine Novosibirsk was launched and put to water on December 25th.
An official ceremony was held in the Semash shipyard.
Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, Admiral Nikolai Evmenov stated, “The strategic and multipurpose nuclear submarines that the Navy is equipped with embody the best scientific achievements in the field of domestic submarine shipbuilding.”
In his speech, the commander of the White Sea Naval Base, Konstantin Kabantsov, emphasized that “Novosibirsk is a modern warship that meets all the requirements and has unique combat capabilities. The ships of this series are capable of solving a wide range of tasks to defeat underwater, surface and ground targets.
“Novosibirsk” was laid down in July 2013 and is expected to enter service by the end of 2020.
Yasen is one submarine class that the U.S military was concerned about.
Some time back U.S.Navy’s top submarine officers, Rear Admiral Dave Johnson stated,
We’ll be facing tough potential opponents. One only has to look at the Severodvinsk, [first vessel of Yasen class], Russia’s version of a nuclear guided missile submarine (SSGN).” He was so impressed with this ship that he had built a model from unclassified data so that he could look at it every day on his way to his office”.
In this video Defense Updates reports on the deployment of Yasen M class nuclear-powered attack submarine Novosibirsk.

According to RIA Novosti a Russian state-operated domestic news agency, the Russian Navy's top officer has acknowledged the country's hypersonic Zircon cruise missile is suffering 'childhood diseases’, meaning it has several issues that need to be fixed before it can be deployed in combat.
Admiral Nikolai Evmenov stated these issues would take at least a few years to resolve before the 3M22 Zircon becomes operational. He didn’t reveal the nature of the issues.
Viewers may note that the first sea trials of Zircon are yet to take place despite it being scheduled for the end of 2019.
The Russian military has seen delays in deploying several important assets which include Sukhoi Su 57 fighter as well as T 34 Armata Tank and this is not surprising.
Zircon is a crucial weapon for Russia and its delay is a significant blow.
In this video Defense Updates analyzes the Russian Navy's top officer’s admission that hypersonic Zircon cruise missile will not be ready any time soon.
