Marinepia Nihonkai (Niigata City Aquarium)
The aquarium features 20,000 animals of approximately 450 different species.
The migratory fish such as Red Sea Bream and Jack Mackerel found in the Sea of Japan are kept in the mega fish tank, which can hold 800 tons of water. There is an undersea tunnel that goes through the mega tank, which provides a panoramic under water view and allows you to observe the school of Pacific Sardines very closely. There is also another fish tank which simulates the environment of the Shinanogawa River, the longest river in Japan, where you can see some local fish such as Chinese Gudgeon and Japanese minnow. You can also see Amur sturgeons and tarpon.
The popular dolphin show is available 4 or 5 times a day. There are also displays of sea lions, sea otters, and other aquatic mammals.
The aquarium dedicates itself to the preservation of species, and it has one of the largest groups of Humboldt penguins in Japan, an endangered species.

Along the Sea of Japan coast, the Marinepia Nihonkai aquarium has sea otters and dolphins. Part of the Northern Culture Museum, the Ito Estate was home to a wealthy 1800s family and displays their art collection. South are the hot springs of Iwamuro.
