Svitzer Glenrock Newcastle Arrival
When Svitzer Australia’s latest tug-fleet addition — Svitzer Glenrock — is commissioned for work in August, its name will carry a significance not just for the port in which it operates, but for the employees who voted for its name.
Designed by the Dutch shipbuilding company, Damen, and built in Vietnam, Svitzer Glenrock is a 32-12 format which means it is 32 metres long with a 12-metre beam. The tug is powerful enough to make an 85-tonne bollard-pull.
But while it has an international heritage, it was the 180 Svitzer employees at the Port of Newcastle who were asked to find a name for the new vessel.
“Glenrock will work in the world’s busiest coal port, moving bulk carriers and petroleum tankers around the harbour,” says Svitzer’s Newcastle Port Manager, Ben Hart.
“The company gave the employees a chance to choose the tug’s name, and they chose Glenrock. It’s a well-known recreation reserve in Newcastle, so it’s fitting.”
Glenrock is a well-used wilderness precinct just south of Newcastle city. It was made a State Recreation Area in the 1980s and is popular with families because of its beaches, bush, wildlife and famous lagoon. #svitzerau #svitzeraustralia

Pasha Bulker_As It Happened.mpg
In June, 2007 my hometown of Newcastle, Australia made headlines around the world when a bulk carrier, the Pasha Bulker went aground on a beach near the city during a fierce storm, not uncommon in this region. In my role as a volunteer for the Newcastle Maritime Centre I have been given several documentaries of this event to show our visitors, but this one, made by a local radio station has proven most popular. Taken from A June To Remember produced by ABC radio 1233. The full DVD, which covers that entire weekend when the Pasha Bulker may have made the headlines but lives were lost as well is available from ABC shops in Australia, or from the Net at abc.com.au
Marine 1 Newcastle NSW Australia
The 'MARINE 1' Helicopter has been servicing the Newcastle Port Corporation's Marine Pilot Transfer (MPT) contract for the last 12 years.
Newcastle has one of the world's largest coal export terminals bulk cargoes including grains, vegetable oils, alumina, fertilizer, ore and coal are exported from the port annually. What this means for Australian Helicopters is each ship requires a local marine pilot to be flown to a vessel, enabling the ship to be safely navigated in and out of the port. We average about 14 helicopter transfers per day over a 24 hour period.
