Andros | About Andros
Andros | About Andros. Chora, built on a small peninsula that lies to the east coastline of the island between Neiborio and Paraporti beaches, is 35 km east of Gavrio Port. Visitors can go by bus, taxi or rental. The town's architecture conveys the nuance of the islands historical ages that combines Venetian, Byzantine and Ottoman rule.
The gateway to the old city has been preserved and gives visitors a sense of medieval homage that harmoniously interlaces the contemporary scene of it's shops, cafes and bars. The town is known for it's leisurely and relaxed atmosphere where fine cuisine, art and views can be enjoyed.
Andros Town has three squares: the first is Goulandris square, the most central one, also known as The Nursing Home Square. In it's centre lies the memorial of the Fallen, while at the backround you can see the Nursing Home and the City Hall. The second is a stone paved square surrounded with many cafes, little restaurants and pastry shops, all shadowed by a huge plane tree. The third one is paved with marble, has a statue of the Unknown Sailor and an amazing view of the sea and the rest of the town. This square, however, is host to a great landmark of the island, the beautiful Venetian-style stone bridge connecting Andros Town to a tiny islet supporting the remains of an old castle, built during the Venetian period to defend the city in 1207.
Chora has a famous reputation for it's artistic heritage, since it houses an array of fine museums. During the summer months, the Museum of Modern Art exhibits works of famous Greek and international artists.

Andros | Halkolimionas Beach. A secluded beach on the south western side of the island, Halkolimionas is located close to the village of Paleopolis, about 20
km from Chora and about 16 km from Batsi town.
The beach of Halkolimionas is found a couple of km from Zagora.
The road is not track but it is pretty narrow. The coast is a bit
rocky, which makes the beach more proper for snorkelling than
swimming. There are no tourist facilities in the region, except for
few rooms to rent scattered around.

Located in a traditional Cycladic building in Tria Pigadia, the purpose of the museum is the preservation and study of the Greek nautical tradition. The exhibits of the museum include rich collections of ship models and rowers from the early Minoan period until the beginning of the 20th century, nautical charts, historical shipping documents, rare engravings and maps as well as ancient artifacts and navigational equipment and instruments. The library of the museum consists of 5,000 rare books and an interesting archive of manuscripts and photos. The garden exhibits marble findings from Delos and Mykonos, a reference to shipwrecks and sailors who were lost at sea. For 4 euros, you will be instructed to proceed clockwise through the museum in order to see the exhibits in historical order. Everything is carefully labeled with helpful historical notes in Greek and English. The courtyard in the back is very attractive and a nice little escape from walking the charming narrow streets of Mykonos town. The Island Stewards Camp (ISC) is a transformational summer experience in the Family Islands for adolescent children living in the over da hill communities of New Providence. The camp was designed by the Indaba Project and the Bahamas Sportsfishing and Conservation Association (BSCA) to deepen the children's understanding of the country in which they live, strengthen their ability to function in it, and enhance their appreciation of, love for and enjoyment of it.
The Camp maintains a core commitment to addressing the pressing community needs of restoring our ancestral knowledge of cultural traditions; reconnecting our children to the wholeness of the natural environment; and cultivating a deeply rooted sense of self-worth and economic power.
The 2010 pilot camp was based in Stafford Creek, Andros. Eight volunteers and two observers oversaw the fifteen Island Stewards, ages 11 to 16 years, who participated in the 14-day pilot.
Andros | Museum of Modern Art
Andros | Museum of Modern Art. The Museum of Contemporary Art was inaugurated on the 28th of July 1979 by the Goulandris Foundation in Hora, capital of Andros. The founders wished to establish a small contemporary art museum which would be designed and outfitted according to latest museum standards, with a view to house international exhibitions. The museum was designed by architect Stamos Papadakis, and was intended to exhibit the collection of works by a local sculptor, Michael Tombros, which he bequeathed to his native island. Due to its growing popularity the museum expanded to a new building situated opposite the old wing, which covers a total floor area of 1000 sq. m. and was designed by Christos Kontovounisios. It was inaugurated in July 1986. The exterior areas and award-winning garden were designed by Miranda Spiliotopoulou-Vazaka. The Foundation's permanent collection includes more than 300 works by Greek and international artists. Part of this collection is exhibited on a rotational basis during most of the year. Every summer, the museum organizes temporary exhibitions showing works of contemporary major artists, which are complemented by a round table discussion, a fully illustrated catalogue, posters and postcards, film screenings on the life and work of each artist, guided tours and children's workshops.

WINGS OF SAMOTHRAKI - Pathways to sustainable development
WINGS OF SAMOTHRAKI
Pathways to sustainable development
In recent decades the Greek island of Samothrace has suffered a series of environmental,
social and financial hardship, but there are reasons to hope. The film WINGS OF
SAMOTHRAKI – follows and documents an ambitious research project that aims at assisting
island's inhabitants in establishing a vision of a sustainable future for Samothrace. The
research project, led by the Austrian Professor Marina Fischer-Kowalski and supported by an
international research team depends on the active participation of the local community. It
aims at addressing current challenges by developing long-term strategies to maintain a
balance between economic and social well-being and the preservation of the island's
environmental and cultural assets. This example can inspire similar efforts around the world.
