The Military Historical Museum of Artillery,
Engineering and Army Signal Corps is the only place in the world where Russian Military history is fully and visually represented. The largest collection of guns, ammunition, small arms and cold weapons, means of military communication, military and engineering equipment, battle flags, military uniforms, different awards, rich archives of documents and an extensive library of military history – are currently amassed in the museum.
The origin
The museum was founded by Peter the First who ordered the construction of a special arsenal on the territory of Peter-and-Paul Fortress to store ancient artillery guns.
By the end of the XVIII century the museum’s collection had extended to over 6000 exhibit items. In the year 1868 the museum, which had limited space, got a brand new place of residence. Moving into the building of the former arsenal situated in Crownwork at Peter-and-Paul’s Fortress, where it can be found to this day.
The Museum acquired the status of storage for weaponry of All-Russian importance and this spiraled into the creation of a scientific library within the museum.
In 1965 the Military Museum of Communications joined the Artillery Museum. It filled the museum’s collection with rarities such as the world’s first electromagnetic telegraph invented by Schilling P.L., the world’s first radio engineered by Popov A.S. and Bodo’s telegraph which transferred the act of unconditional surrender of Germany in 1945.
In 1991 the museum’s collection was enriched with a collection of exhibits from the Polish memorial house-museum of Kutuzov M.I. Kutuzov Hall was then founded and the commander’s room was reconstructed with his personal belongings used in its design.
The Museum at present day
The Museum has one of the World’s most complete collections of artillery; it counts more than 1200 pieces of ordnance and mine throwers starting with sacks and harquebuses of the XIV century; ending with modern atomic artillery and rocket technology. Almost half of this collection represents foreign guns from thirty three countries of the world.
The pictures of the best Russian battle painters, rare photographs, many of which have dedicatory inscriptions from the representatives of the Imperial Family, as well as the personal weapons of the Emperors of The Russian Empire, Napoleon Bonaparte, Marshal Murat I. Russian and Soviet military commanders are collected in the Museum’s funds.
Since 2002 an external exposition has been open near the Museum area that has stretched out for more than two hectares located in the courtyard of the Crownwork. It consists of 250 pieces of artillery, engineer equipment, missile munitions up to the current models.
The Museum exposition takes 13 rooms altogether, which is more than 17 thousand square meters. The Museum Fund includes:
700 thousand exhibits;
15 thousand archive files;
100 thousand volumes of military-historical literature;
90 thousand negatives and slides.
The cultural and educational work of the Museum
The museum periodically holds scientific conferences, the Large and Small exhibition halls host temporary thematic exhibitions, a lecture hall is also operational here. The Studio of European histrionic fencing “Silhouette” operates on the Museum’s territory. Its students hold open costume classes demonstrating mastery of fencing techniques, starting with the Viking Age finishing with Napoleon times.
The museum is open from 11:00 to 17:00, is closed on Monday, Tuesday and last Thursday of the month.

As part of the series of new urban developments sprawling up in Moscow, Zaryadye Park is the latest to open this month in a bid to improve the city’s green space. Led by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, the international consortium has designed this new public space that encourages integration and celebrates the amplitude of regions across Russia by artificially emulating each of their climates: the steppe, the forest, the wetlands and the tundra.
The 35-acre park is located in a historically commercial part of Moscow and is the first of its scale in 50 years. Forming a backdrop to the park, the city’s landmarks such as the Kremlin, Red Square, and St. Basil’s Cathedral develop a cityscape taken advantage of through the many vista points astutely placed into the billowing landscape. The park was officially opened by a civic ceremony during Moscow’s City Day festivities, but full completion is scheduled for Autumn.
A custom paving system pixelates the surface of the park as a combination of green and grey paving stones transform from entirely paved to natural landscape - undefining the edge. By blurring the boundary between landscape and hardscape, free movement throughout the park is promoted for an individualized, unscripted experience. Traditionally, Russia’s parks were extremely ordered and symmetrical so a completely pathless space is important for Moscow’s urban movement.
Across the park, four microclimates are created through regulating the temperatures, eliminating wind and simulating daylight in progressive zones. The augmented climates allow potential use of the park all year round as the open landscape in winter can become hills for sledding whilst pavilions positioned in the folds of the park provide shelter and green spaces.
Plunging out over the adjacent road, 70 meters overlook cantilevers over the Moskva River to offer views across the whole city and along the river, instigated by the natural slope of the site. The park also includes five pavilions, two amphitheaters, and a philharmonic concert hall.
Diller Scofidio + Renfro's Zaryadye Park is an exhibition as well as an attraction due to the passive climate control strategies and new building technologies it comprises. Residents of Moscow will be able to appreciate the green spaces as a hub for creativity and cultural integration as the city endeavors to become the ‘leading’ megacity, investing in more large-scale projects.
The international consortium responsible for the design included Diller Scofidio + Renfro (USA), Hargreaves Associates (USA), Citymakers (Russia), Transsolar (Germany), Buro Happold (United Kingdom), Central Park Conservancy (USA), Directional Logic (USA), ARUP (USA), Arteza (Russia), MAHPI (Russia), and Mosinzhproekt (Russia).

MOSCOW (AP) — A Russian airliner that had just taken off from the country's second-busiest airport crashed Sunday, killing all 71 people aboard and scattering jagged chunks of wreckage across a snowy field outside Moscow.
The pilots of the An-148 regional jet did not report any problems before the twin-engine aircraft plunged into the field about 40 kilometers (25 miles) from Domodedovo Airport, authorities said.
The Saratov Airlines flight disappeared from radar just minutes after departure for the city of Orsk, some 1,500 kilometers (1,000 miles) to the southeast.
Transport Minister Maxim Sokolov confirmed that there were no survivors.
The 65 passengers ranged in age from 5 to 79, according to a list posted by the Russian Emergencies Ministry, which did not give their nationalities. Six crew members were also aboard.
Emergency workers combed through the field while investigators descended on the airport to search for clues to what brought the jet down. One of the flight recorders was recovered, Russian news reports said, but it was not immediately clear if it was the data or voice recorder.
