The Margravial Opera House in Bayreuth is a fascinating UNESCO World Heritage site. It's an opera house and theatre built in the 1740s by the ruling Margrave and his wife, Wilhelmina, a great patron and participant in the arts. Despite the grand stone facade, the interior of the building is entirely done in wood and plaster, though it's difficult to tell. Everything is covered in elaborate baroque decorations loaded with symbolism, and looks absolutely fantastic after a recent five-year restoration project. Let's check it out!

Bayreuth is a sizeable town in northern Bavaria, Germany, on the Red Main river in a valley between the Franconian Jura and the Fichtelgebirge Mountains. The town's roots date back to 1194.
The festival city of Bayreuth in Upper Franconia (Oberfranken) is relatively quiet most of the year until the Richard Wagner Festival settles in for 30 days every summer. Bayreuth features a wealth of impressive baroque and rococo architecture, as well as freshly-brewed Franconian beer in the local Biergartens. Although the city remains fairly tame compared to the much larger cities in Germany, the presence of almost 10,000 students at the University of Bayreuth means an active nightlife is not difficult to find.

Festival Theater (Festspielhaus), Festspielhügel Built in 1872, this opera house still ranks among the best in the world in design and acoustics. Home to the Richard Wagner Festival every summer. Just north of the main train station, take bus 5 to Am Festspielhaus. The grounds are crowded, tours seldom, and tickets rare during the annual Richard Wagner Festival in late July-August each year. 5 €
Garden Museum Fantaisie Palace and Park (Schloss and Park Fantaisie) The 18th century palace designed by the daughter of Margrave Friedrich and Margravine Wilhelmine, features Germany's first garden design museum. Located 5 km west of Bayreuth, take bus 8231, 8433, 8446, or 8449 towards Donndorf to stop Fantaisie. 3 €.
Hermitage/Old Palace (Eremitage/Altes Schloss) The old palace of Margrave Georg Wilhelm on the outskirts of town, the palace was expanded and the gardens created by Wilhelmine as a summer residence. The ornate fountains begin their waterworks on the hour from 10AM to 5PM. Guided tours are available. The Eremitage is approximately 6 km outside Bayreuth, take bus 2 or 3 to Eremitage. 2.50 €.
Margravial Opera House (Markgräfliches Opernhaus) The baroque opera house, commissioned by Margravine Wilhelmine and designed by famous Giuseppe Galli Bibiena and son Carlo from Italy, was completed in 1748 and remained Germany's largest opera house until 1871. This ornate opera house partially drew Richard Wagner's attention to Bayreuth. 5 €.
New Palace (Neues Schloss) The new residence of the Margrave Friedrich and his wife Wilhelmine after their old residence burnt down. It was designed and built by the French builder Joseph Saint-Pierre, and completed in 1754. The entrance fee includes entrance to the two museums inside: The Museum Margravine Wilhelmine's Bayreuth and the museum Bayreuth Faience - Rummel Collection, featuring porcelain manufactured in Bayreuth in the 18th century. Rooms of interest include the Garden Rooms, Cedar Room, Old Music Room, and the Cabinet of Fragmented Mirrors (designed by Wilhelmine herself). 5 €.
Spitalkirche (Spitalkirche), (At the west end of the main market street Maximilianstrasse).
Stadtkirche (Stadtkirche). The Stadtkirche is since 2006 closed and undergoing renovations.
For a town of its size, Bayreuth is rich in museums; over two dozen can be found in and around the city. Noteworthy among the many are the Richard Wagner Museum and Franz-Liszt-Museum, documenting the lives of these prominent German and Hungarian composers, the Guinness Book of World Records recognized Maisel's Brewery and Cooper's Museum, as well as the museums located in the New Palace: Bayreuther Faiences - The Rummel Collection, The State Galleries and Margravine Wilhelmine's Bayreuth. Every fall the museums offer a Bayreuth Museum Night (Bayreuther Museumsnacht). On this night, a single ticket allows entry to every museum in the city from 8PM until 2AM.

This is my promotional video for the city of Bayreuth, Germany. I teamed up with Bayreuth tourismus to create a visual symphony of all the unique aspects of Bayreuth Germany.
Filming took place in the winter and summer seasons where I followed a local to the Bayreuth opernhaus, Bayreuth university, and even the Fabrik Bayreuth nightclub.
Bayreuth is a city heavily influenced on opera and the famous composer, Richard Wagner. I wanted to create a video that visually highlighted all the city attractions but made you feel like you were watching it inside an opera house.
My Bayreuth local took me to Markgräfliches Opernhaus (UNESCO Welterbe), Universität Bayreuth, Eremitage, the Richard Wagner Museum, Bayreuther Winterdorf, Festspielhaus, the historic city center on Maxstraße where we ate bratwürste, the Rathaus, we ate at Liebesbier, Dubliner, partied all night inside of the Fabrik Bayreuth nightclub, and finished the tour at the Bayreuth Volksfest.

The Margravial Opera House in Bayreuth joined the list of World Heritage Sites in 2012. It is one of the few surviving 18th century theaters in Europe. Its opulent Baroque interior decoration is absolutely unique. When it opened, the Margravial Opera house was home to the biggest stage of its time.

The Margravial Opera House is a Baroque opera house in the town of Bayreuth, Germany, built between 1744 and 1748.
It is one of Europe's few surviving theatres of the period and has been extensively restored.
On 30 June 2012 the opera house was inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
It was built according to plans designed by the French architect Joseph Saint-Pierre , court builder of the Hohenzollern margrave Frederick of Brandenburg-Bayreuth and his wife Princess Wilhelmine of Prussia.
It was inaugurated on the occasion of the marriage of their daughter Elisabeth Fredericka Sophie with Duke Charles Eugene of Württemberg.
The wooden interior was designed by Giuseppe Galli Bibiena (1696 – 1757) and his son Carlo from Bologna in an Italian Late Baroque style.
The box theatre is completely preserved in its original condition, except for the curtain which was taken by Napoleon's troops on their march to the 1812 Russian campaign.
The prince box was seldom used by the art-minded margravial couple, who preferred a front-row seat.
Princess Wilhelmine, older sister of the Prussian king Frederick the Great, had established the margravial theatre company in 1737.
In the new opera house she participated as a composer of opera works and Singspiele', as well as an actor and director.
Today she features in a sound-and-light presentation for tourists.
After her death in 1758, performances ceased and the building went into disuse, one reason for its good conservation status.
More than one hundred years later, the stage's great depth of 27 metres attracted the composer Richard Wagner, who in 1872 chose Bayreuth as festival centre and had the Festspielhaus built north of the town.
The foundation stone ceremony was held on 22 May, Wagner's birthday, and included a performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, directed by the maestro himself.
Parts of the 1994 biopic Farinelli were filmed in the Opera House.
The theatre was the site of the annual Bayreuther Osterfestival until 2009.
Each September from the year 2000 to 2009, the theatre also hosted the Bayreuth Baroque festival, with performances of early operatic rarities.
The 2009 festival included performances of Andrea Bernasconi's festa teatrale, L'Huomo, to a libretto by the Margravine Wilhelmine.
The theatre closed in October 2012 for extensive refurbishment and redevelopment and is not expected to reopen for several years.
