The Marktkirche St. Georgii et Jacobi, commonly known as Marktkirche, is the main Lutheran church in Hanover, Germany. It was built in the 14th century and, together with the nearby Old Town Hall, is considered the southernmost example of the North German brick gothic (norddeutsche Backsteingotik) architectural style. The roof and the vaults of the naves were destroyed in an air raid in 1943 and restored in 1952.
The church is a hallenkirche (hall church). Above the nave and two aisles rises a monumental saddleback roof. The high western tower was a symbol for the power and the wealth of the citizens of the town. It is still one of the highest towers in Lower-Saxony and a landmark of the city.
The main altar was carved of linden wood, around 1480. The front depicts the Passion of Christ in 21 scenes, following models of Martin Schongauer. The back shows scenes from the lives of the two patron saints, Saint George and Saint James. The altar was moved to the Aegidienkirche in 1663 to make room for a Baroque altar. In 1856 it was taken to the Welfenmuseum and thus was not destroyed during World War II. It was returned to the Marktkirche in 1952.
An organ was installed in the turmraum (tower room) of the Marktkirche in 1893, which included parts of an instrument of the 17th century. This organ was destroyed in World War II. Today's main organ is at the back wall of the southern aisle. The first instrument in that location was built in 1953 and 1954 by the organ builders Emil Hammer Orgelbau (in German) and Rudolf von Beckerath. It had 61 stops, four manuals and pedal. The prospekt (casing) was designed by Dieter Oesterlen and is a protected monument.

From 2007 to 2009, the instrument was rebuilt by Goll Orgelbau (Lucerne). The casing and about 50% of the pipes were kept. The new organ has 64 stops, 39 of them mostly using the older material.[3]

Als die damals neue Kirche errichtet wurde, sollte sie der Stadt und deren Stand entsprechend gigantisch sein.
Der Kirchturm hätte mit seiner geplanten Höhe wohl die damals die höchsten Kirchtürme überragt wenn, ja wenn nicht...
Wie auch später das neue Rathaus sollte (und wurde) der Neubau der Marktkirche von den Bürgern von Hannover bezahlt werden.
Da es Damals, also im 14. Jahrhundert noch kein Fernsehen oder Computersimulation gab und man den Bürgern den Neubau schmackhaft machen wollte wurde ein riesiges Modell vor der (alten romanischen) Marktkirche aufgestellt damit die Bürger schön spenden und da ging es schon los...
Während des Baues aber ging der Bürgerschaft das Geld aus, der Turm war nicht in seiner geplanten Form fertig zu stellen.
Später wollte man das Werk vollenden und damit jeder wissen sollte, was man sich vorgenommen hatte und wie es aussehen sollte, wurde auf den unvollendeten Turm das Modell des Selbigen gesetzt, das heute noch dort oben steht.
Und so kommt es zu der einmaligen, kuriosen Form des Kirchenturms, der dann doch nicht so riesig geworden ist. Mal wieder typisch für Hannover. ;)
Deshalb mag ich diese Stadt auch so gerne, hier gibt es immer wieder Gegebenheiten die einen schmunzeln lassen.
Denn wo sonst seht das Modell eines Turms auf dem Turm und das schon seit ca. 600 Jahren?
Die Marktkirche war während der Reformation ein wichtiger Anlaufpunkt für protestantische Gläubige, heute erinnert eine Statue Martins Luthers vor der Marktkirche an ihre Rolle. Aufgrund einer exzellenten Innenakustik wird die Marktkirche heute häufig für diverse Konzerte genutzt.
Heute ist die Marktkirche nicht mehr aus Hannover weg zu denken und gehört zum Stadtbild.
Wenn Ihr von Außerhalb kommt und Euch die marktkirche anschauen wollt kommt einfach zum Weihnachtsmarkt, der rund um die Marktkirche stattfindet vorbei, bei Glühwein und Bratwurst ist die Kirche gleich nochmal so schön.

The Aegidienkirche was a church in Hanover, the capital of Lower Saxony, Germany. It was one of three churches in the Old Town, the others being the Marktkirche and the Kreuzkirche. It was destroyed in World War II, and was left in ruins as a war memorial.
The church was built in the 14th century in the centre of Hanover, succeeding a chapel, and a Romanesque church built in 1163. The western wall of that church is partly extant. The church was dedicated to Saint Giles, one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. The present Gothic building was built in 1347 of sandstone from the Deister. The Reformation in Hanover began in this church.
The church was destroyed in a 1943 air-raid on the city, as was most of the old town, including the other two churches. It was left in ruins as a war memorial. A monumental sculpture in the interior was designed in 1959 by Kurt Lehmann (de) and called Demut (Humility).
Several Baroque epitaphs are featured on the outer walls. One of them, for Susanna Magdalena Oldekop, who died in 1648 as a child, shows her with an angel. The Siebenmännerstein (de) shows a relief of seven praying men who, according to legend, sacrificed themselves at the Döhren Tower (de) to rescue the town. The epitaph at the church is a copy of the original which is held by the Historisches Museum am Hohen Ufer (de). The Aegidienkirche has belonged to the Marktkirche parish from 1982.

Hannover is an international trade fair city. It also is mostly modern buildings as it was not fully restored back to its former glory after the war. However, there are some gems like the Hannover Marktkirche that you can find.
TURMAUFSTIEG ZUR MARKTKIRCHE HANNOVER 2017
Auch 2017 gibt es hin und wieder mal die Möglichkeit auf den Turm der Marktkirche zu gelangen.Allerdings ist die Teilnehmerzahl stark limitiert (ca.15 Personen pro Aufstieg),da der Turm an der Spitze doch eher klein ist (ca.5x5m).
Für alle die immer schon mal wissen wollten,wie es im inneren des Turmes aussieht,hier ein kleines Video vom Aufstieg mit prachtvoller Aussicht über Hannover.
Urkundlich erwähnt wurde die Marktkirche erstmals 1238. Evangelisch wurde sie im Jahr 1536. Ihren heutigen schlichten und vom Naturton der Backsteine geprägten Charakter erhielt sie beim Wiederaufbau nach den Zerstörungen im zweiten Weltkrieg.
Über rund 350 Stufen gelangen wir bis in den Dachreiter mit den Schlagglocken, die viertelstündlich die Zeit angeben. Der Aufstieg geschieht in drei Abschnitten: zuerst ins „Gewölbe“ mit dem historischen Dachstuhl, dann in die Glockenstube mit 11 Glocken, darunter die Friedensglocke als größte Glocke Norddeutschlands, abschließend in den Dachreiter mit der Möglichkeit einer schönen Aussicht in 75 m Höhe.
Dauer: ca.1Std.
Anmeldung im Gemeindebüro unbedingt erforderlich, höchstens 15 Personen.
Treffpunkt: Willkommentisch in der Marktkirche
Der Aufstieg, auf eigene Gefahr, auf die Höhe von ca. 75 m ist körperlich anstrengend, geeignete Schuhe sind erforderlich, Schwindelfreiheit wird vorausgesetzt.

It effectively presents Hannover as the dullest place in the German speaking world (too ugly for Munich? too dumb for Berlin? too trendy for Bauzen? too rich for Schwerin? come to Hanover). in reality Hannover is a dynamic and diverse city, and the Hotel am der Marktkirche is a hip little inn with a good bar, but I can also see what Heinrich von Handzahm was drawing at.

Hanover. Germany. Lower Saxony. Travel of the Cat on a leash
Hanover. The capital city of Lower Saxony. The abode of the “most correct” German language. The motherland of one of the British royal dynasties, of rock band Scorpions and, of course, of Baron Munchausen. How can we without him?
Handel worked here and here the famous horse breed was bred.
And what is more, the great Leibniz! Of course, he was born not here, but in Leipzig. But Hannover turned to be a good place for many glorious achievements of this decent man.
Hannover was first mentioned in 1150. The city stands on the river Leine.
The name came most likely from the phrase “hoen overe”, which is translated from Old German as “high coast”.
