В 10 км от Гюмри, в деревне Мармашен находится монастырь Мармашен (X-XIII вв.) – выдающийся культурный и религиозный центр средневековой Армении. Это один из самых своеобразных культовых построек на территории Армении.
Мармашенский монастырь состоит из трех сооружений. Самый главный храм – наиболее сохранившийся – расположен в центре и является крупнейшей постройкой. Храм выстроен из красного кирпича и представляет собой купольный зал (возведен князем Вахрамом Пахлавуни). Крестообразный фасад украшен арочными нишами и маленькими узкими окошками в них. Зонтичный купол возвышается на граненом барабане.
К югу от основных построек монастыря стоит небольшая крестово-купольная церковь с 4 приделами. Западнее – руины четырёхстолпного гавита, четырёхапсидного круглого храма и усыпальницы.
Marmashen Monastery is a 10th century Armenian monastic complex consisting of five churches near the village of Marmashen in the Shirak Province of Armenia.
Մարմաշենի վանքը Ախուրյանի շրջանի Վահրամաբերդ գյուղի հարավ-արևմտյան մասում՝ Ախուրյան գետի ձախ ափին գտնվող հուշակոթող է։ Վանքը կազմված է երկու շինությունից, գլխավոր՝ Կաթողիկե և կից փոքր եկեղեցիներից։ Գլխավոր եկեղեցին ըստ արձանագրության կառուցել է Վահրամ Պահլավունի հայրենասեր իշխանը 988-1029 թվականներին, երբ դեռ Անին Բագրատունիների ոստանն էր։ Կոթողի հիմքում ընկած են հայ ազգային ճարտարապետությանը տիպիկ կառույցաձևեր։ Մայր եկեղեցու պատերը և’ ներսից, և’ դրսից պատված են սրբատաշ կարմրավուն տուֆով, իսկ հիմքային մասերը շարված են բազալտով։

Das Marmashen-Kloster befindet sich in der Nähe der Dörfer Marmashen und Vahramaberd und neben dem Fluss Akhuryan in der Shirak-Provinz in Armenien. Das Kloster wurde in den Jahren 988 bis 1029 vom Fürsten Vahram Pahlawuni erbaut. Das gesamte Kloster besteht aus der Hauptkirche Heilige Kathogike und einer in Ruinen liegenden kleineren Kirche direkt daneben. Vor dem Platz und dem Eingang zur Hauptkirche befindet sich die Ruine einer Rundkirche und daneben befinden sich auch noch die Ruinen ehemaliger Wohngebäude. Einige Meter neben der Hauptkirche befindet sich das Grabmal des Großfürsten und Erbauers Vahram Pahlawuni. Dieses Kloster befindet sich nordwestlich rund 14 Kilometer (30 Minuten Fahrzeit) von Gyumri entfernt.

Le monastère de Marmashen est situé près des villages de Marmashen et Vahramaberd et à côté de la rivière Akhuryan dans la province de Shirak en Arménie. Le monastère a été construit entre 988 et 1029 par le prince Vahram Pahlawuni. Le monastère entier se compose de l'église principale Holy Kathogike et d'une église plus petite en ruines juste à côté. Devant la place et l'entrée de l'église principale se trouvent les ruines d'une église ronde et à côté se trouvent les ruines d'anciens bâtiments résidentiels. A quelques mètres de l'église principale se trouve la tombe du grand-duc et constructeur Vahram Pahlawuni. Ce monastère est situé à environ 14 kilomètres au nord-ouest (30 minutes en voiture) de Gyumri.

Ancient winemaking process boosts sales and tourism

Making wine in a giant clay jar called a Kvevri is a Georgian tradition dating back as far as 8000 years.
It is believed to be the most ancient method of making wine and Georgia hopes to achieve success on the world stage by promoting it.
STORYLINE:
Making a Kvevri is a demanding job.
It takes up to three months to create one out of doughy clay. Then, it needs up to ten days to bake at 1000 degrees Celsius (1832 degrees Fahrenheit) in a large oven.
Gocha Kbilashvili is one of the few Kvevri makers in the wine producing Kakheti region of Georgia.
He has inherited this craft from his ancestors and is sure his son Ramazi will follow in his steps.
Kbilashvili's family make a living by producing and selling these enormous Kvevris, the price of which varies from 700 to 1000 Georgian Lari (438 - 625 US dollars).
A Kvevri demands hard work at every point of its making. First, I craft the Kveveri and then put it into the oven for baking. It needs around ten days in the oven. You have to supervise the process very attentively especially during the final three days, if you do not pay sufficient attention the hard work can be ruined in a minute. So, it demands work and attention to get the final product ready to make a good wine, Gocha Kbilashvili says.
Kvevri's made by the Kbilashvili family are sold throughout Georgia as well as in Armenia, Ukraine and Italy as some wine making companies of these countries have also started to use Kvevri.
These enormous jars can be found in almost all households across Georgia, but during the Soviet Times the tradition was partially lost due to demand on mass production.
Today, Georgia strives to enter the world market with Kvevri Wine.
More and more wine making companies are putting an emphasis on natural produce, which gives this type of wine, with it's natural processes, a head start in the modern market.
We are trying to revive this ancient tradition and make popular worldwide the unique character that Georgian Kvevri wine has. It is very important that this kind of wine undergoes a natural filtration process and has no additives and therefore is very healthy, says Gela Gamtkitsulashvili, who owns Twins Wine House with his twin brother Gia.
The brothers are among those who are reviving the tradition of bio-wine produced in clay vessels.
The procedure is very simple at first glance - freshly squeezed grape juice is poured into clay jars that are buried in the ground. Grape stems, skins and seeds are added to the juice and are left for fermentation.
The fermentation takes place in a slow and natural way, without additional ingredients.
The Kvevri remains sealed during the period of fermentation, which can last several months.
Grape and clay combining together with the stable coolness of the ground produces an all-natural product with a unique taste and aroma.
In order to be more creative and attract more tourists to their cellar, the Gamtkitsulashvili brothers have put the whole process of Kvevri winemaking on display.
Small clay vessels split in two to reveal the unique way of wine making can be found in their hotel and cellar.
Currently they have 107 Kvevris which makes it the biggest Kvevri cellar in Georgia producing red and white wine.
Last year they produced 300,000 litres of wine, selling it in Georgia and Japan.
Currently Gela and Gia are preparing to sell wine in Russia, too, which has only been a feasible market recently. Russia banned the importing of Georgian wine in 2006 which saw sales take a real nose dive. But adapting to the situation saw winemakers look to other markets such as China. Now the ban has been lifted and Russia is back buying once again, there is money to be made.
