Maronite Icons from the Cyprus Eparchy
To all the Maronites in Cyprus especially to Kormatiki, I offer this short movie hoping that you will retrieve your land one day, turkish occupied Lebanon for 402 years and they left should I say escaped like cowards.
I would like also to remind the Kormatiki villagers of their origin, the village of Koor, in North Lebanon (10 km from the Hardini shrine). This is where you got the name
God Bless you brothers

9. SOUNDBITE: (English) Maria Kokkinou-Boege, displaced Maronite Catholic Cypriot:
It's a unique and historic opportunity as the visit of the Pope will revive our hopes for our return to our four occupied (by Turkey in northern Cyprus) villages. As you may know the Maronite villages or the Maronite community, has been caught in the middle of this international conflict in 1974 and since then Maronites have dispersed all over the universe and also to the Greek side, part of the island.

The visit of the Pope gives this message, that Maronites, Catholics, and small communities are not alone.

16. Various of UN peacekeepers in buffer zone
17. SOUNDBITE (English) Youssef Soueif, Maronite Catholic Archbishop:
I am very sure that the Pope in all his Apostolic visits and all the places and everywhere, his message is the unity, is the reconciliation, is the respect of each other.

STORYLINE:
The divided island of Cyprus was on Thursday preparing for a visit from Pope Benedict XVI on Friday who will stay on the Greek side of the capital Nicosia in the Catholic Nuncio palace.
Cyprus was split into an internationally recognised Greek Cypriot south and a breakaway Turkish Cypriot north in 1974 when Turkey invaded after a short-lived coup by supporters of union with Greece.
The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, with a population of 257-thousand, is recognised only by Turkey, which maintains 35-thousand troops there.
The visit comes as the Pope urged dialogue over Israel's raid on six aid ships trying to break the blockade of Gaza.
On Thursday a funeral was to be held in Istanbul for the nine activists killed by Israeli commandos in the raid which sparked diplomatic dismay in the West and sorely aggravated Turkey's long-running ties with Israel.
In his first remarks on it, Benedict urged Mideast authorities to hold talks and to guarantee better conditions for Palestinians who live in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, which has been under an Israeli and Egyptian naval blockade since 2007.
Officially, the island's division is not on the pope's agenda.
Benedict has no plans to visit northern Cyprus, said Vatican spokesman, the Reverend Federico Lombardi. He declined to anticipate what the pope might say on the issue.
Instead, the trip was designed around Cyprus' location as a bridge to the Middle East.
Benedict will meet with leaders from Catholic churches in the region to draw up proposals for a major meeting of Middle Eastern bishops at the Vatican in October.
There are also problems between Cypriot Catholics and Orthodox Christians, who are dominant in the south.
Most of the Maronites were forced to head south.

Pope Benedict visits the President of Cyprus
On the morning of Pope Benedict's second day in Cyprus, he paid his respects to the island's President, Dimitris Christofias. At the presidential palace, he was introduced to the civil authorities and members of the diplomatic corps. However, before meeting the President, His Holiness laid a wreath of flowers at a monument raised in memory of Archbishop Makarios, first President of the Republic of Cyprus.
