TRIP TO GOZO MALTA PART1 / WHERE DID WE GO IN GOZO? A VERY LOVELY ISLAND
Gozo, known locally as Għawdex ,is an island of the Maltese archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea. The island is part of Malta. After the island of Malta itself, it is the second-largest island in the archipelago. Compared to its southeastern neighbour, Gozo is more rural and known for its scenic hills, which are featured on its coat of arms.
The island of Gozo has long been associated with Ogygia, the island home of the nymph Calypso in Homer's Odyssey. In that story, Calypso, possessed of great supernatural powers, and in love with Odysseus, holds him captive for a number of years, until finally releasing him to continue his journey home.
As of March 2015, the island has a population of around 37,342 (out of Malta's total 475,000), and its inhabitants are known as Gozitans (Maltese: Għawdxin). It is rich in historic locations such as the Ġgantija temples, which, along with the other Megalithic Temples of Malta, are among the world's oldest free-standing structures.
The island is rural in character and, compared to the main island Malta, less developed. It was known for the Azure Window, a natural limestone arch that was a remarkable geological feature, until its collapse in 2017. The island has other notable natural features, including the Inland Sea and Wied il-Mielaħ Window. There are many beaches on the island, as well as seaside resorts that are popular with both locals and tourists, the most popular being Marsalforn and Xlendi. Gozo is considered one of the top diving destinations in the Mediterranean and a centre for water sports.

The Island of Gozo: Sacred Island - Natural Beauty
The Maltese Islands have been considered as sacred islands since earliest prehistory. Infact there are thirty ancient temple sites on the Maltese Islands in an area approximately 122 square miles (316 square km).
This sacred atmosphere is quite predominant in the island of Gozo, where, apart from the Ġgantija prehistoric temples, one could find magnificent churches across the small villages. The most famous temples of the modern era are the domeless Cathedral dominating the Ċittadella, the Basilica of Ta’ Pinu and the Rotunda at Xewkija.
But apart from being a Sacred Island, Gozo is also a land of natural beauty. According to local tradition, Gozo was the island where Ulysses spent his time with the nymph Calypso in a cave over the beautiful bay of Ramla l-Ħamra. The Gozitan coast, though very small, offers beautiful scenery and attractive beaches such as Xlendi, Marsalforn, Mġarr ix-Xini (where Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie filmed their movie “By the Sea” in 2015) and last but not least the seaport of Mġarr. This natural beauty is also present in the natural trio of landmarks known as “It-Tieqa” (the Azure Window), “Il-Ġebla tal-General” (The General’s Rock) and “Il-Baħar magħluq (the Inland Sea), all at the same place called Id-Dwejra.
This natural beauty combines with the friendliness of the islanders who welcome every visitor in every season. Whilst the island is more calm and peaceful between autumn and spring, the summer months are more crowded but provide the extra attraction in village festas and street entertainment, an additional memorable experience for the visitor.
Gozo is just about 25 minutes ferry boat trip away from the Maltese port of Ċirkewwa. During this journey, one could also admire the very small and beautiful islands of Kemmuna and Kemmunett, which are normally inhabited by just one family. This is the place where the series Count of Montecristo was filmed. In summer, these islands are an attraction for both Maltese and tourists who want to spend some time in a peaceful setting.

Azure Window Highlights and Victoria Gozo Malta
Azure Window and Victoria Gozo Malta Highlights is another video in my Malta Tourist Information series.
Please take a look at them all at
It’s just €1:50 for any bus journey in Malta, so we took the bus to the MGarr Ferry Terminal for a day out to Gozo.
We bought return tickets, costing only €4:65 each, which makes for a very low cost day out.
Crossing to Gozo from Malta on the Ferry was a relaxing journey,
from the modern cruise terminal in Malta,
to the crossing on a spacious boat with all amenities.
The crossing took about 25 minutes and was a good sightseeing opportunity with stunning views.
Once in Gozo, we caught the bus to The Azure Window and Inland Sea at the far end of Gozo at SAN Lawrenz,
again only €1:50 single, and it took best part of an hour to get to there.
For only €4 we had the most exciting 20 minutes boat ride ever
from boarding at the inland sea
and cruising through the rocky cliffs
to the open sea and the Azure Window.
Here’s the highlights.
As we return to the Inland Sea, You have to agree that for €4 that was good value.
Now to get the bus back into Victoria the Capital of Gozo to find more adventure, where we explored the many Squares to relax in with a coffee, explore the narrow lanes, and explored the town.
We could have toured Gozo in the Gozo sightseeing bus or hired a Cycle, but we had a bus to take to catch the Ferry back to Malta.
If you have found this video usefull, please give me a thumbs up and consider pressing the subscribe button, you will then be notified whenever I upload the next video of the beautiful Island of Malta.
