MALTA (2019) MARSAXLOKK WALKING TOUR - Market and Fishing Boats
Marsaxlokk is a small, fishing village on the South East coast of Malta. It's famous for its picturesque harbour, brightly painted fishing boats known as luzzu and kajjik (with their characteristic painted eyes on the prow - 'the Eye of Osiris',) and the Marsaxlokk Market. This is a major fish market that takes place on Sundays - the tourist market taking place the rest of the week.
Filmed on a Sunday, we'll see part of the fish market as well as some of the most noted restaurants along the way.
We begin our walk on a jetty at the end of Xatt is-Sajjieda, the road that stretches along the seafront. The bright luzzu and kajjik boats bob in the harbour, their characteristic blue, red, yellow and green paintwork reflected in the water. It's immediately obvious why Marsaxlokk is one of the best day trips from Valletta, and leads the top 10 things to do in Malta if you're visiting.
There's so many places to eat in Marsaxlokk, many with gorgeous views over the harbour - from Costa Coffee to Harbour Lights, Roots Restaurant, La Nostra Padrona Restaurant, Pisces Restaurant Marsaxlokk and Cafe De Paris - naming just a few.
It's a perfect place to sit out and people watch - but make sure to book if you're visiting on a Sunday.
We continue our walk by following Triq Il Wilga, passing the rated Tartarun restaurant and Terrone to follow the line of boats out to the end of the quay.

Marsaxlokk Bay Sunday Market Malta
Marsaxlokk Bay Sunday Market Malta is another video in my Malta Tourist Information series. Please take a look at them all at
Marsaxlokk is a fishing town in the far South West of Malta, with a pleasant large double bay lined with cafes and shops.
The town transforms every Sunday into a market town when the Marsaxlokk Bay Sunday Market is held.
It's about an hours journey by bus from Valletta the Capital of Malta, they are always very full but the fare is only £1.50.
You can easily spend a couple of hours at Marsaxlokk Bay Sunday Market, and it's best combined with another tourist destination such as The Blue Grotto which isn't very far.
Also near by is Ghar Dalam near Birzebbuga, the Heritage Malta cavernous water-worn cave with numerous geological features with remains and artefacts of the first human settlers in Malta and is the oldest prehistoric sitein Malta.
Admission prices are very low with discounts for Seniors and children.
Malta International Airport is also very close, worth remembering, especially if your flight leaves late on a Sunday.
Marsaxlokk is also right next to Malta Freeport.

MARSAXLOKK - THE FISHING VILLAGE
Marsaxlokk Bay is Malta's second largest natural harbour. It is the best place to see the colourful, traditional Maltese fishing boats, the Luzzus, with the mythical eye painted on their prows.
The village is the Islands' main fishing harbour; its Sunday fish market a fascinating insight into local life and a traditional industry. The stalls brim with the night's catch - fish of all shapes, colours and sizes. The village itself has many good fish restaurants. Marsaxlokk derives its name from the Arabic word marsa, meaning harbour, and Maltese for the south-easterly Mediterranean wind, the Xlokk (Sirocco in Italian). Marsaxlokk, with its sheltered habour, was an easy landing place for pirates and the Ottoman Turks. It was here that the Ottoman Turks landed for an attack which ended in the Great Siege of 1565. Napoleon's army landed here in 1798; and in recent times, the harbour was the scene of the Bush-Gorbachev Summit,1989.
The headland to the left of the Bay is Delimara Point. It has two attractive, secluded rocky inlets suitable for swimming: Peter's Pool; and the furthermost part of the headland. Fort Delimara, on the west of the peninsula, was built by the British in 1881 to guard the entrance to Marsaxlokk Bay.

Marsaxlook is a small town and picturesque on the southest coast of the Maltese Islands. It has a population around 3,000 people and is known as the fishing village.
The fame of Marsaxlokk is because for gondolas used for fishing throughout the archipelago, known as Luzzu. They are boats that are still used for the fishing of the 'lampuki', a fish from the Mediterranean that is caught between middle August and until the end of December, and that represents one of the most consumed fish in Malta, present in several traditional foods.
If you want to see the roots of the archipelago and at the same time enjoy of the attractive and colorful architecture, that place its in Marsaxlokk.

Scenes from Marsaxlokk, Malta
Marsaxlokk is a traditional fishing village located in the south-eastern part of Malta. The village’s name comes from marsa, which means port and xlokk, which is the local name for south east. The word is related to the name for the dry sirocco wind that blows from the Sahara, comparable to the equivalent Catalan word, xaloc. The village is known for the Marsaxlokk Market, a large market which takes place around the whole village on Sundays and tourist market all days during the week. The inhabitants of the village are called the Xlukkajri and are historically fishermen.
Marsaxlokk is about 40 minutes from Valletta by public bus No. 81 or No. 85. The village is approached via a long, narrow, straight, road with vineyards on both sides, or along the coast from Birzebbuga if traveling on the No. 85. The bay is at the south-east end of the island and is memorable for the many colourful, traditional fishing boats called luzzu . The painted eyes on these luzzus are believed to protect the boats from danger. Tourists visit the town for the picturesque photo opportunities of the bay filled with colourful fishing boats, plethora of seafood restaurants and the very busy Sunday market that sells everything from fish, fruit and vegetables, delicatessen goods and groceries, to souvenirs, clothing and footwear. Another attraction is the nearby, spectacular, Saint Peters Pool. This is a swimming area with crystal clear, deep blue water behind the Delamara Power Station. It is not advisable to visit when the wind is from the South or East however, as the water can become cloudy and sometimes, rough.
