Marston's New Bottling Line Opening Highlights
Marston's has invested £7.4million in a new state of the art bottling line (in addition to the existing one) to improve their capacity and flexibility
PRESS RELEASE:
31st January 2014
Marston's multi £million investment as bottled beers boom
• Marston's 'future-proof' their business with £7.4m investment
• 1:4 premium bottled beers in the UK is Marston's
• Supermarkets lead the increase in beer sales
Marston's officially opened its new £7.4m bottling line facility at Burton-on-Trent this week as it was announced that British beer sales have increased for two consecutive quarters for the first time in 10 years.
According to the latest quarterly 'Beer Barometer' figures from the British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA), overall beer sales rose by 0.8 per cent in the quarter, some 15.3 million extra pints on the same period in 2012. Beer sales in pubs declined at a lower rate, falling by 2.2 per cent while sales in the off-trade continued to grow, with the final quarter increase of 3.9 per cent contributing to 2013 off-trade sales beating 2012 levels.
Marston's predicts that its packaged business will continue to grow by 10% Year on Year both through its own brands and in contract bottling. Currently one in four premium bottled ales in the UK is brewed and packaged by Marston's. The new line is more energy efficient, more economical to run, whilst providing a more flexible facility for smaller bottle runs, different labelling and packaging formats.
Richard Westwood, Managing Director of Marston's Brewing Company commented: At a time when Marston's beers feature in one in four premium bottled beers in the UK, this investment was a move to future-proof our business. The new line requires less energy, allows us greater flexibility for our bottled beer portfolio and contract services as well as bringing employment to the town with 17 new jobs.
In a turnkey operation supplied by the German packaging specialists KHS, the new bottling line processes 18,000 bottles per hour and is able to sterilise the beer prior to packaging either by flash pasteurisation or sterile filtration.
There are also four new 480 barrel conditioning tanks made by local engineering firm Briggs of Burton to increase capacity for holding beer before bottling.
