Afgelopen weekend hebben we de Martinitoren(olle Grieze) in centrum Groningen(Nederland) bezocht. Ik wilde altijd al een keer de Martinitoren in Groningen beklimmen, via een smalle stenen trap gaan we naar boven. Het was druk in de Martinitoren op de Grote Markt wat even wringen was op de trap. Na heel veel treden komen we boven en kunnen van de mooie uitzicht boven de stad Groningen(Nederland 2017) genieten. Het was mooi weer en je kon dus ver kijken over de stad. In Groningen noemen ze de Martinitoren ook wel De Olle Grieze. Een beklimming van de Martinitoren in centrum Groningen(Nederland) is zeker wel de moeite waard.

The Martinitoren (Dutch pronunciation: [mɑrˈtinitoːrə(n)]; Martini or St. Martin's Tower) is the highest church steeple in the city of Groningen, Netherlands and the bell tower of the Martinikerk.
The tower is located at the north-eastern corner of the Grote Markt (Main Market Square). It contains a brick spiral staircase consisting of 260 steps, and the carillon within the tower contains 62 bells. The tower is considered one of the main tourist attractions of Groningen and offers a view over the city and surrounding area. The front of the tower shows three pictures above the entrance: the blind poet Bernlef (nl), Saint Martinus and Rudolf Agricola. All three are men are linked to the history of Groningen. The tower is tilting about 0.6 m, according to reports[citation needed] the tower has a foundation of only three metres deep. The citizens of Groningen call their tower d'Olle Grieze, meaning the old grey one in the local dialect.
History
Twice before a tower has stood on the site of the current Martinitoren. The first was built in the 13th century; this was approximately 30 metres high and built in the Romanesque style. This tower was destroyed by lightning. In the 15th century a second tower was built, approximately 45 metres high, but it also was devastated by lightning in a storm. The third and current tower was largely built between 1469 and 1482 from blocks of Bentheimer sandstone. The steeple was not finished until the mid-16th century. This tower was initially an estimated 102 metres high. Its architecture was influenced by the Dom Tower of Utrecht.
The lighting of celebratory fires on the third gallery, after the departure of Spanish and Walloon troops in 1577, caused the tower to partially collapse. However, the remaining portion kept a height of 69 meters. In the 17th century the tower was repaired up to the current 97 metre height. Later the tower was damaged several times by natural violence and several wars. There is a bullet hole in one of the bells, a result of heavy fighting when the Canadian Forces liberated Groningen at the end of World War II.

57 duizend euro voor Martinitoren
De crowdfunding voor de verbouwing van de Martinitoren is gisteren gesloten. Er is in totaal bijna 57 duizend euro opgehaald om de binnenkant van de toren te renoveren.
De verbouwing vindt de komende maanden plaats. In Oktober wordt de toren feestelijk geopend. Het pronkstuk van de toren moet de 'hoogste filmzaal van Nederland' worden. Het gebogen scherm wordt 9 meter breed en 2,5 meter hoog. Op de foto's hieronder is te zien hoe die zaal er uit gaat zien.
Tijdens de verbouwing blijft de Martinitoren gewoon open voor bezoekers. Ben je nu nieuwsgierig naar de veranderingen in de toren? Op 8 september kan je tijdens open monumentendag D'Olle Grieze in, waar de gidsen dan ook uitleg geven over de aanpassingen in de toren.

In addition to the usual hymns you will also hear many Christmas songs. Also there are videos of church bells and sounds both in The Netherlands and in Germany. Dennis is employed as an adviser for church bells in conjunction with the RCE (formerly Commission on Preservation).
Filmzaal pronkstuk vernieuwde Martinitoren
De afgelopen maanden is hard gewerkt aan een renovatie van de Martinitoren. Met name de komst van de filmzaal is een grote verandering voor 'D'Olle Grieze'.
Ook zijn er nieuwe bewegwijzering en informatieborden toegevoegd aan de Martinitoren. Daarnaast zijn er ruimtes beschikbaar gesteld voor publiek die dat eerst niet waren.
De toren was nooit echt gesloten voor publiek, maar de officiële heropening zal de komende dagen plaatsvinden. Zo wordt er morgen gezongen op de Grote Markt en komen er verschillende wethouders. Zaterdag kunnen alle Marts, Martha's, Martini's en alles wat daar op lijkt gratis de toren in. Ook kunnen mensen zaterdag liedjes aanvragen die door de beiaardier van de Martinitoren gespeeld zullen worden.

Groningen
Groningen (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɣroːnɪŋə(n)] ; Gronings: Grunnen) is the main municipality as well as the capital city of the eponymous province in the Netherlands. With a population of 201,865 as of 2016, it is the largest city in the north of the Netherlands. An old city, Groningen was the regional power of the northern Netherlands, a semi-independent city-state and member of the German Hanseatic League. Groningen is a university city: it houses the University of Groningen (about 30,000 students) and the Hanze University of Applied Sciences (about 25,000 students).
History
The city was founded on the northernmost point of the Hondsrug area. The oldest document referring to Groningen's existence dates from 1040. However, the city already existed long before then: the oldest archaeological traces found are believed to stem from the years 3950–3720 BC, although the first major settlement in Groningen has been traced back to the 3rd century AD.
In the 13th century, when Groningen was an important trade centre, its inhabitants built a city wall to underline its authority. The city had a strong influence on the surrounding lands and made its dialect a common tongue. The most influential period of the city was the end of the 15th century, when the nearby province of Friesland was administered from Groningen. During these years, the Martinitoren was built, which loomed over the city (then) at 127 metres (417 feet) tall. The city's independence came to an end when in 1536, it chose to accept Emperor Charles V, the Habsburg ruler of the other Netherlands, as its overlord. Later, it joined the Republic of the Seven United Provinces.
In 1614, the University of Groningen was founded, initially only for religious education. In the same period the city expanded rapidly and a new city wall was built. That same city wall was tested during the Third Anglo-Dutch War in 1672, when the city was attacked fiercely by the bishop of Münster, Bernhard von Galen. The city walls resisted, an event that is still celebrated with music and fireworks on August the 28th (as Gronings Ontzet or Bommen Berend).
The city did not escape the devastation of World War II. In particular, the main square, the Grote Markt, was largely destroyed in April 1945 in the Battle of Groningen. However, the Martinitoren, its church, the Goudkantoor, and the city hall were not damaged. The battle lasted several days.
