Places to see in ( Freiburg - Germany ) Martinstor
The Martinstor, a former town fortification on Kaiser-Joseph-Straße, is the older of the two gates of Freiburg im Breisgau that have been preserved since medieval times. Both gates, the Martinstor and the Schwabentor, are located in the city centre. In medieval times the Martinstor was also known as Norsinger Tor.
According to dendrochronological research the wooden beams date back to the year 1202; the gate was first given documentary evidence in 1238 as „Porta Sancti Martini“ (Latin Gate of the Holy Martin). Over the centuries it has been reconstructed several times. At one time, it also served as a prison and it was said of its occupants that they had donned “The Cloak of Martin“.
From the 17th Century on the side of the gate facing the city was decorated with a picture of Martin of Tours. During this time, due to the construction and leveling of the suburbs by Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban, the gate's link to the city was lost. Thus, Salzstraße served as the main access road from Höllental. There have been numerous restorations of the picture, the most recent of which was in 1851 by Wilhelm Dürr. In 1968/69 the picture was removed. To date the local town council has still not been able to decide on a new image. As a result there remains a blank spot in honour of the conflicts between the Freiburg Civil Defence and the French Revolutionary Forces.
The Martinstor underwent its biggest change in 1901. By this point, the surrounding buildings surmounted the old city gate and the old passageway had become too small for the growing city and the new tram infrastructure. Having momentarily considered demolition, the city council opted instead to modify the building. Under the direction of Carl Schäfer the tower was heightened from 22 to 60 metres and a new roof construction in the architectural style of the 15th century was added. An additional gate with a larger thoroughfare, designed in the same architectural style, was erected next to the original gate. A German Reichsadler was painted on the outer facade of the gate above the emblems of Freiburg and of the nearby region of Baden, before it was removed in 1951. A replication of a baroque sandstone plate depicting the Double-headed eagle of the Holy Roman Empire was later installed.
Next to the archway, facing the city center, there is a tablet commemorizing the burning of witches in Freiburg on which three names are engraved: Marghareta Mößmer, Catharina Stadelmann and Anna Wolffart. These women, all citizens of Freiburg, were executed in 1599.
Inside the western part of the arch which was built in 1901, a fast-food restaurant (McDonald’s) is located and announces this with a big sign over the ancient archway. The city council of Freiburg could not keep the company from putting up their sign, but could prevent the prominent red and yellow of the same in favor of a more decent coloring. Due to its conspicuous presence there, much to the consternation of city leaders, some students have referred to Martinstor as McDonald's-Tor.

FREIBURG IM BREISGAU, GERMANY
We aren't having much luck with the weather today. It is really rainy here in Freiburg. It is Easter weekend but we are out an exploring and we want to show you the city. Let's go have a tour.
One of my first impressions of Freiburg is that it is such a great city to walk around in. That's all we've been doing so far. It's very picturesque. There are cobbled streets and it is also very historic.

Thankfully, the weather has shifted dramatically for the better. Earlier we had been rained out, so we had to head back into the hotel because it was cold and windy. Now we're seeing a few patches of blue skies, so we're going to keep exploring around Freiburg.

Germany Travel Attractions - Schwabentor in Freiburg
Take a tour of Schwabentor in Freiburg, Germany -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
Once a guardian of Freiburg, the Schwabentor remains a striking memorial to the city's past.
The Schwabentor is a gate tower from the days when Freiburg had defensive walls.
The image on the south side of the tower is St. George, said to be a great slayer of dragons.
Only the Schwabentor and its brother tower, the Martinstor, remain from medieval times.
The newer of the two towers, it was built in 1250 and has been well maintained since.
Today, the Schwabentor is nearly identical to its original structure.

The city of Freiburg im Breisgau sits austerely on the edge of the Black Forest. Home to one of Germany’s oldest universities and a Gothic sandstone cathedral, it’s a hub for academics and medieval history buffs. Chug German suds at a local brewery, then hop a cable car up Schauinsland mountain, where astounding views and a solar observatory await.
Freiburg im Breisgau, a vibrant university city in southwest Germany’s Black Forest, is known for its temperate climate and reconstructed medieval old town, crisscrossed with picturesque little brooks (bächle). In the surrounding highlands, hiking destination Schlossberg hill is linked to Freiburg by a funicular. Featuring a dramatic 116m spire, the Gothic cathedral Freiburg Minster towers over the central square Münsterplatz.
Freiburg im Breisgau, or more commonly Freiburg is known as the Jewel of the Black Forest. By German standards it is a major city in southwest Germany, situated on the edge of the Black Forest. When ordering train tickets and similar items online, be careful not to confuse Freiburg (im Breisgau) with Freiburg (an der Elbe) or Fribourg in Switzerland.
Münster cathedral is Freiburg's biggest sight in the city, one of the oldest and most beautiful in all of Europe. The gargoyles are not to be missed; be sure to study every corner of the Münster. Make the effort to climb the stairs to the top of the tower for the fabulous views (Entry €1.50). Every day in the morning until 13:00 Mon-Fri and 13:30 Saturday, there is a market on the square surrounding the church. Visit on Saturday morning, as it then will be the biggest and nicest. Vendors are pleasant and sell local produce and goods. Recommended fare is a Bratwurst mit Brötchen (Bratwurst in a bun) or Currywurst for around €2.20. They're inexpensive, authentic, and make a delicious lunch or snack.
Bächle are small canals that line the streets of the inner city. These canals were once meant as a way to fight fires in medieval Freiburg. The locals say that if you accidentally fall or step into one, you will marry a Freiburg resident.
Schwabentor. One of two remaining old city gates.
Martinstor. The other old city gate, which is well known locally for the McDonald's next door which has placed its logo on the gate.
Altes Kaufhaus, located at the square surrounding the Münster.
Rathäuser. The historic and current city halls are about a five minute walk from the Münster.
Augustinermuseum The new Augustiner Museum houses a renowned art collection with works ranging from the Middle Ages up to the Baroque period, as well as paintings from the 19th century.
Naturmuseum und ethnologische Sammlung (Museum of Natural History)
Seepark. A man-made lake and a popular escape from the urban housing estate of Betzenhausen. Complete with beer garden and a restaurant, Seepark is popular with families and those planning a walk around the stunning green-belt area.

Let's go to Freiburg
Hey guys!
Last year I've stayed in Freiburg im Breisgau for a weekend. A good friend of mine lives there and my boyfriend and I visited her. As a child I have been to Freiburg many times, because one big part of my family lives there. But in the last ten years we didn't had the time to go there, so it was a great experience to revisit the city. I discovered many new wonderful places and we really had the perfect weather :)
So here are some impressions of it...

Places to see in ( Freiburg - Germany ) Mundenhof
Places to see in ( Freiburg - Germany ) Mundenhof
The Mundenhof is located on the western edge of Freiburg im Breisgau, and is the smallest district in Freiburg, with only 46 residents. The zoo on the grounds of the Mundenhof is well-visited. The municipal garden center is also located on the grounds. The Mundenhof is one of many Green Spaces in Freiburg, which present a major factor in its reputation as a green city.
In 1968, the grounds were converted to a small outdoor zoo, called a Tiergehege in German to differentiate it from larger zoological gardens. It is the largest zoo in Baden-Württemberg, covering 38 hectares. Eugen Keidel, mayor of Freiburg im Breisgau at the time, was a strong supporter of the project, and on September 28, 1968, the zoo was opened to the public.
In 1971 the Fördergemeinschaft Freiburger Tiergehege e.V. (Friends’ association for Freiburg zoological gardens) was founded. Domesticated species from all over the world and some undomesticated species can now be seen at the Mundenhof.
A top priority of the Mundenhof zoo is to care for and display endangered domesticated species. The open-air exhibition ground is divided into eight sections, each of which are host to various species specific to particular continents. The zoo is home to peacocks, gibbons, crab-eating macaques, brown bears, emus, ostriches, alpacas, yaks, llamas, and many other species. About 30 different species and about 180 individual animals can be observed.
The Verein der Aquarien- und Terrarienfreunde e.V. (Friends‘ association of aquariums and terrariums) converted a former horse barn to house 3 terrariums and 12 pools. The pools range in volume from 500 liters (132 US gallons) to 3000 liters (792 US gallons), and they are divided into 5 salt water and 7 fresh water pools. This section of the park is also dependent on donations to exist, because entry is free.
The park has many interconnecting paths with various viewing points with views of the city of Freiburg and the surrounding land. There is also a restaurant on the grounds of the Mundenhof, called the Hofwirtschaft. Next to the restaurant is a playground. A further attraction are the storks that nest on the Mundenhof grounds. Their nests are further off, but can easily be observed through binoculars.
