Located a short distance away from Marugame Station in Kagawa Prefecture, Shikoku, is the Marugame Genichiro-Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art built by the famous architect Yoshio Taniguchi. Commonly known as MIMOCA, this museum displays the works of Genichiro Inokuma, a famous artist from Marugame City. Visitors can view his paintings, large murals as well sculptures here.
Housing over 2000 of Inokuma’s works, the museum also has special exhibits displaying contemporary art pieces of Japanese and international artists. In addition the museum holds workshops to encourage creativity and compassion from children.

Visitors to Kagawa Prefectures in Shikoku, will want to visit Marugame (丸亀), the second largest city in the Prefecture. Marugame is a port city in the western part of Kagawa Prefecture and includes many of the Shiwaku Islands located in the Seto Inland Sea. Many of the Shiwaku Islands are hosts to the famous Setouchi Treiennale, a contemporary art festival with venues on several of the islands of the Seto Inland Sea.
Marugame has many points of interests for its visitors. For young visitors, we recommend the New Reoma World, an amusement park filled with rides and fun for the whole family. The Marugame Castle, one of the twelve remaining “original” castles of Japan, was constructed on a hill to “control” the city it governed. The Mimoca, Marugame Genichiro Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art, houses fascinating objects and other art pieces. A famous round fan or uchiwa museum is also in this city. The people of Marugame originally made these hand-held round fans for the pilgrims who came to Shikoku to visit the temples.
Visitors can enjoy all the delicious delights this city has to offer. From udon, which is famous throughout Kagawa Prefecture to Marugame grilled chicken on the bone, there is something for everyone here. Many locals love the sanuki cow which is used as toppings for udon, or the beef is available in lunchboxes in this region. Fruits are also popular, with peaches being a favorite.
Visitors will find this city located west of the Seto Ohashi, the bridge connecting Shikoku to Honshu, fascinating. In addition to the areas mentioned above, there are an array of restaurant and shops to explore here.

Bamboo Fans Incorporating the Traditional Skills of Master Craftsmen | Marugame Round Paper Fan
Marugame Uchiwa are a type of fan made in the area around the city of Marugame, Kagawa prefecture. It is believed that, in the early Edo period (1603-1868), the first Marugame uchiwa were made as souvenirs for pilgrims to the Konpira Shrine. The original design included a vermillion ground color and an enclosed character meaning gold in the center to represent the shrine, with the whole surface coated with persimmon tannin.
During the years 1781-1789, low-ranking samurai in the Marugame domain were encouraged to make fans to supplement their income, and production grew to become a well-known local industry. The fan handle and framework are often made from a single piece of bamboo, and handle designs come in flat and round shapes. Marugame uchiwa makes up for a large part of production of domestic fans.
Although the mass production of fans made of resin account for most production, bamboo fans incorporating the traditional skills of craftsmen are considered to have more character.
Marugame uchiwa are light, fit the hand well, and are comfortable to use, with a kind of depth not shared by resin fans. Fan production peaked around 1955, followed by a fall in demand due to the increasing popularity of electric fans and air conditioners.

General Production Process
1. Cutting bambo
Making use of the breakable nature of bamboo wood, logs are cut into 40 to 45 cm (about 17.7 in) lengths, and then split into equal widths. These narrow strips are then shaved on the inner surface of the bamboo joint, so that they are comfortable to hold.
2. Splitting bamboo
A cutting machine is used to make 35 to 45 lengthwise cuts of about 10 cm (about 3.9 in) that start from the head of the bamboo.
3. Drilling holes
A drill is used to make a hole in the joint of the bamboo. Then another specialized craftsman sticks a sickle into the hole.
4. Pattern carving
A small knife is used to carve the uchiwa's pattern. The type of pattern depends on the kind of fan.
5. Entwining thread
After passing a bamboo bar through the hole, the ends are entwined with thread.
6. Binding
Since the ends will have warped in the entwining process, the angle of the bamboo bar is adjusted to make the fan symmetrical, and then bound with thread.
7. Pasting paper
The head of the fan is covered with glue and paper.
8. Cutting shapes
The edges are cut into shapes like a full moon or an egg. A sickle is placed on the fan and hit with a mallet.
9. Finishing touches
A long paper slip is pasted to make the edges of the fan secure. Then strips of paper are glued on both sides of the bamboo bar. Finally, the fan is pressed with a roller to finish.

Nestled on top of Mount Kameyama is Marugame Castle (丸亀城), located in Marugame city, Kagawa Prefecture, Shikoku. Completed in 1602 by the feudal lord Ikoma Chikamasa, Marugame Castle is one of the 12 remaining “original” Japanese Castles. An original castle is a castle that has survived the post feudal time period (post 1868) without being damaged or destroyed.
Being located in the strategic hilltop location, Marugame Castle overlooked both the city it governed as well as the Seto Inland Sea. With trade and enemies utilizing the waterways, the position of the castle strengthened the city’s control.
Just thirteen years after Ikoma Chikamasa built Marugame Castle, it was dismantled due to a new policy limiting the number of castles per province. However, after the province was divided into two in 1660, the castle was reconstructed. In 1869, fire destroyed many of the buildings of the castle. And through time, other acts of destructions were committed. As a result, all which remain today are the stone walls, a few buildings, the Ote Ichino Gate (first gate), the Ote Nino Gate (second gate) and the tenshu (keep). The Japanese Government recognizes the original castle buildings as Important Cultural Properties.
Marugame Castle also known as Kameyama Castle is located in Kameyama Park. Visitors will need to climb upwards on a steep path, circling the hill to arrive at the castle grounds. In addition to roaming through the grounds and buildings, visitors may wish to visit the small museum located in the castle’s main keep. Also, with the castle located atop Mount Kameyama, visitors making the steep climb are rewarded to spectacular views of both Marugame city and Seto Inland Sea.
Being a popular tourist spot, visitors to Marugame City often visit these grounds. However, particularly in the spring, the castle is crowded due to the 1000 cherry blossom trees planted around castle’s stone walls and near the main keep. Cherry blossoms bloom from late March to early April in this area. During the first two weeks, there is an annual cherry blossom festival held here.

From Marugame Station, board the bus. Disembark at Marugamejo-mae (丸亀城前) bus stop. The bus stop is located right in front of the castle. The journey takes about 5 minutes and the fare is 200 yen. There are many buses every hour.

On our second day we woke up early and went to Ritsurin Park, a very beautiful Japanese Park! We met a nice volunteer guide, did a tea ceremony and had an awesome view.
2日目は、まずは早起きをして高松の観光スポット「栗林公園」に行きました。写真で見ていた以上に綺麗な日本庭園でした。ボランティアガイドさんに案内してもらいながら、茶室でお茶を飲んだりとても楽しめました！
After that we took the highway bus all the way to Matsuyama, where we visited the Saka no Ue no Kumo museum. We saw the Bocchan Train, Dougo Onsen and lots more.
その後は、松山へバスで移動し、坂の上の雲美術館をはじめ、五色そうめんを食べ、道後温泉まで行きました。小説坊っちゃんに出てくる町を坊っちゃんエクスプレスに乗りながら実感できて最高でした。
For the end of the day we used a Ferry to get to Hiroshima and eat Okonomiyaki with one of our friends from Thailand! It was sooo gooood!
旅の最後は、高速船に乗って広島へ移動です。松山港から広島港まで焼く1時間で移動できました。広島では、ジョナサンの元同僚の佐藤さん、岡本さんカップルに案内してもらって美味しい美味しい広島焼を頂きました。
