Marwell Zoo is a 140-acre zoo situated at Owslebury near Winchester, in the English county of Hampshire. Marwell Zoo is owned and run by the registered charity Marwell Wildlife. The zoo is home to over 1,200 animals of 135 different species. Marwell Zoo was founded by John Knowles, opening in 1972. Marwell Zoo was one of the earliest zoos in Europe to place an emphasis on animal conservation. Within a few years of its establishment, Marwell Zoo became an important breeding centre for several species, some (e.g. the Mongolian wild horse) already extinct in the wild, others (e.g. the snow leopard and Siberian tiger) close to extinction.
Marwell Zoo includes a number of themed areas, including:
Into Africa is an African themed exhibit which includes Rothschild's giraffes, sable antelope, weaverbirds and Old World monkeys.
Heart of Africa is themed on the Congo rainforests and is home to bongos, Congo buffalo and Lake Malawi cichlids
Tropical World is a glass house with rainforest creatures including poison arrow frogs, tarantulas, frilled lizards, and leafcutter ants.
Roof of the World is themed along the Himalayan mountain range and exhibits snow leopards and owls in natural surroundings
World of Lemurs a glass corridor around the lemur enclosures exhibiting: black and white ruffed lemur; Alaotran gentle lemur and ring tailed lemur.
Penguin Cove was refurbished in 2012 and is home to thirty Humboldt penguins
Aridlands & Desert Carnivores are home to addax, dorcas gazelles and curly tailed lizards.
Fur, Feathers & Scales was renamed in 2015 and currently includes a walk-through aviary for African birds, Cold Blooded Corner, a reptile house housing rare species' such as Gila monster and Madagascan tree boa, a partula snail unit, Egyptian tortoises and sun conure aviaries.

Southampton Sailing Week, Another Great Hampshire Day Out For May On The Water!
Getting out on the water has become important for many, if only to escape the pressures of modern life. The ability to leave your work life behind and enjoy the water with fellow competitive racings, or, cruisers has it's own draw - perhaps you can see why so many take up the sport.
See for yourself? Southampton in Hampshire started it's very own sailing week in 2017 and looks to build on this annually going forward. Activities can involve racers, cruisers, day sailors, dinghies, paddle boards, canoes, et al. Visit
More importantly through the many sailing clubs and associations locally the sport can introduce newcomers to the excitement and benefits of being on the water as apart of a day out in Hampshire! For many this may seem daunting, don't worry everyone has to start somewhere and with the Solent's history and involvement as the mecca for UK sailing don't let this put you off – sailing and more importantly boating does not have to be out of reach financially. There are many Southampton Sailing Clubs and Hamble Sailing Clubs. Visit
If you wish to learn then many of the schools are backed by the RYA, who help maintain high standards of learning in the sport. So look out for the affiliation!
The clip is a brief reason of why sailing in the solent can be a great day out in Hampshire!
