Star & Garter Hotel and Mary's Meanders, Linlithgow - A Taste of Outlander
Two Linlithgow businesses have got together to launch a traditional Scottish themed evening of food and entertainment, based on the hugely popular Outlander books and the TV series, currently airing in the USA. The filming sets for the TV series include local sites such as Blackness Castle, Linlithgow Palace and Beecraigs woods.
Mary’s Meanders have joined forces with The Star & Garter Hotel to bring the “Outlander experience” to you. Set in Jacobean surroundings, it will include a meal from the Outlander inspired blog Outlander Kitchen, with traditional Scottish music and entertainment, including a resident Gaelic bard.

Linlithgow palace, birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots
Built and developed over two centuries by successive Stewart kings of Scotland. After the Wars of Independence the old castle was restored for royal use once more , but a great fire in 1424 destroyed the castle and much of the town. From the ashes rose James 1's new 'pleasure palace', where the sovereigns of the royal house of Stewart held court in grand style. Today, the palace is entered via the arch of James V's south gateway, created around 1535.
This leads you into the impressive courtyard, surrounded on all four sides by ranges reflecting the contributions of different monarchs.
Of all the Stewart monarchs, Mary (1542-67) is undoubtedly the one most closely associated with Linlithgow Palace. Yet apart from being born here, on 8th December 1542, she had very little impact on the place. Mary remained at Linlithgow for just seven months. In July 1543, agreement was reached with England for her marriage to Edward, Prince of Wales. Her mother, Mary of Guise, widow of James V feared that the infant queen might be abducted in preparation for her eventual marriage. She therefore moved her daughter to the greater safety of Stirling Castle.

St Magdalene distillery, Linlithgow, Scotland
Video impression of former St Magdalene distillery, in the town of Linlithgow, west of Edinburgh in Scotland.
Originally founded in 1795, this lowland distillery was closed in 1983 and later tuned into apartments. Surely every whisky lover dream to actually live in a distillery...
The whisky produced at St. Magdalene is very rare these days and also know under the name Linlithgow. There are some bottlings still around, mostly by independent bottlers, but they don't come cheap.

Cambuskenneth Abbey
Cambuskenneth Abbey is a ruined Augustinian monastery located on an area of land enclosed by a meander of the River Forth near Stirling in Scotland. Although the abbey is largely disused, the neighbouring village of Cambuskenneth continues to be inhabited.
Cambuskenneth Abbey was built by order of King David I around the year 1140. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, it was initially known as the Abbey of St Mary of Stirling and sometimes simply as Stirling Abbey. The major street leading down the castle hill from the royal residences in Stirling Castle to the abbey was called St. Mary's Wynd, a name it retains.
Cambuskenneth was one of the more important abbeys in Scotland, due in part to its proximity to the Royal Burgh of Stirling, a leading urban centre of the country and sometime capital. Royalty, including English King Edward and later Scottish King Robert the Bruce, prayed regularly at the abbey. Bruce held his parliament there in 1326 to confirm the succession of his son David.
In 1486 Margaret of Denmark died at nearby Stirling Castle and was buried at the abbey. In 1488 her husband King James the Third was murdered at the Battle of Sauchieburn and his body was brought to Cambuskenneth Abbey for burial. The elaborate marker of his grave, which was funded by Queen Victoria, is still visible at one end of the church.
The abbey fell into disuse during the Scottish Reformation. By 1559 there were few monks remaining there, and the abbey was closed and most of the buildings looted and burned. The abbey was placed under the jurisdiction of the military governor of Stirling Castle, who had much of the stonework removed and used in construction projects in the castle.
Of the once wealthy abbey, mostly only knee-high ruins and exposed foundations remain. Only the 13th century campanile is intact, following an extensive renovation in 1859. The abbey was acquired by the crown in 1908, and it is presently managed by Historic Scotland. The abbey is open to visitors during the summer months. Visitors can enter the base room of the campanile; the stairs to the upper floors are locked, but are opened for visitors on occasion.
