If I Survive: Frederick Douglass and Family in the Walter O. Evans Collection
Celeste-Marie Bernier, professor of black studies and personal chair in English literature, School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures, University of Edinburgh, and co-editor-in-chief, Journal of American Studies, Cambridge University Press; in conversation with Walter O. Evans, collector
Walter O. Evans has spent decades collecting, curating, and conserving a wide variety of African American art, music, and literature in an effort to preserve the cultural history of African Americans. Part of his collection focuses on the nineteenth-century formerly enslaved statesman and abolitionist Frederick Douglass (c. 1818–1895). In addition to inscribed books from Douglass’s and his descendants’ libraries and printed editions of his speeches, the collection contains letters, manuscripts, and photographs. Much of the material is of a personal nature: correspondence between family members, family histories, and scrapbooks compiled by Douglass and his children; the scrapbooks, with their personal documents and familial relationships, illuminate Douglass in ways never before seen. In 2018 Celeste-Marie Bernier and Andrew Taylor of the University of Edinburgh published If I Survive: Frederick Douglass and Family in the Walter O. Evans Collection, a guide to the collection born of a longstanding collaboration between the authors and Dr. Evans. Within its pages they have reproduced letters, manuscripts, and photographs from the collection along with transcriptions and commentary that provide an invaluable resource for Douglass scholars. On Friday, April 26, 2019, in conjunction with the exhibition In the Library: Frederick Douglass Family Materials from the Walter O. Evans Collection at the National Gallery of Art, Bernier speaks with Evans about the role of his collection in scholarship on Douglass and the preservation of Douglass’s legacy for a new generation of Americans.

Granite State (General) Oiltronic Elevator-Margate Resort (Lakefront Building); Laconia, NH
(Featuring a very epic jet plane seen in the other video).
Yes I keep filming this thing...HOWEVER, this place is pretty nice, so I keep coming back. I will say, it's a pretty unique place to stay. Just the way of things is pretty nostalgic to typical resorts were ran in the 1950's/1960's. Basically speaking, there are some things to do on the lake (boat rentals, swimming, etc) to keep you on the property as much as possible (although nobody could really do this as it was pretty much bad weather when I was here).
The business started in 1952 as only a motel. Somewhere in the 1960's/1970's this and the lobby building were built (the elevator was installed in 1980, and could have been added into the building a while after it was built). This is the only elevator I know of in the entire complex (I found a dumbwaiter somewhere else, and I do not think the inn building across the street has an elevator). If a handicapped person wanted to go to the ballrooms in basement of the lobby building (two separate buildings), they could enter in here and go down this elevator. Then they could go into the other building via a tunnel connecting the buildings together. This is one of the reasons this is unique.
*One interesting thing that happened that I mentioned in the video is not too long after I left this place last year, Mitt Romney was interviewed by CBS in the ballroom on the top floor of the building (I recognized it while seeing it on TV). This was because he was in the area at the time as he has a vacation place not too far from here (that MAY have been his plane seen in the video). It isn't too likely he took this very elevator as most people seem to take the stairs (not too sure why). It is a safe bet, though...
You can see in a picture of his interview that he is in front of one of the two fireplaces in the room (the side closer to the door). Here's the page with the photo:
The elevator DOES have some quirks to it. Some of the startups are slightly harsh and there is some creaking in the elevator. The harsh startups could probably easily be adjusted by adjusting the valve releasing times. One thing that I think that could be easily added is a sensor on a door or a change in door timer length. Trying to push a bell cart in or out this thing is a bit awkward with the door wanting to close on you. Despite some of the quirks, listen to that EPIC General motor. I haven't heard a motor like this anywere else (no, it's not a Chewbacca motor, though).

DT Rating: 2: Slightly Harsh Startups, Creaking
Additional Notes: Granite State was one of the many distributors of General Elevator products. Creaky, slightly hash startups. There is a VERY good possibility that Mitt Romney rode on this elevator when he came to this place for an interview by CBS in July of 2012.*
*NOTE: I AM NOT trying to create political tension by mentioning a politician in the video. I am only referring to him as a celebrity that so happened to visit this place not too long after me leaving last year. I have no interest in politics and very neutral in these sorts of things. Please don't start wars because of this...

Awesome 1960's Security Hydraulic Elevator at 100 E. Lancaster Ave, Wayne, PA
Wow. Such a beauty. Not sure of the year, so not sure if it is Rotary or Dover. I do however believe that Security was a distributor back before the days of Dover, and I think these fixtures were made by Rotary and then passed on to Dover, kind of like how Dover passed on Impulse to Thyssen, and how Westinghouse passed on RT to Schindler. I couldn't find the year the building was built online, not even on loopnet, so I am not sure if it's from before or after 1955 (the year Rotary Lift Co. became Dover Elevator Corporation).
