It is the life story of Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz. Raised on the plains of Texas, Nimitz had never seen an ocean when he entered the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland at the beginning of the century. Yet, forty years later he rescued the world's largest body of water from the tyranny of one of the mightiest fleets ever assembled. His incredible and brilliant victories at Midway and the Coral Sea, at Okinawa and the Philippines during the Pacific Campaigns (1941-1945), will remain forever as an example of the United States Navy's proudest heritage.
***************
About the fleet admiral rank:
Fleet admiral (FADM) was a five-star flag officer rank in the United States Navy and was, in its time, the highest rank attainable in the service. Fleet admiral ranked immediately above admiral and was equivalent to General of the Army and General of the Air Force.
The United States rank of fleet admiral was created by an Act of Congress for four officers to hold on a temporary basis on December 14, 1944. There has been no authorization to use the rank since. No legal provisions ever existed for its use other than for the four officers appointed to it.
The rank was held by the following officers:
William D. Leahy – December 15, 1944
Ernest J. King – December 17, 1944
Chester W. Nimitz – December 19, 1944
William F. Halsey, Jr. – December 11, 1945
The timing of the first three fleet admiral appointments was carefully planned, such that a clear order of seniority and a near-equivalence between the services was established for the generals of the Army promoted at the same time. General Marshall was promoted to general of the Army on December 16, 1944; General MacArthur was promoted on December 18, 1944; General Eisenhower was promoted on December 20, 1944, and General Arnold was promoted on December 21, 1944.

Annapolis is part of the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area.
The city was the temporary capital of the US in 1783-1784 and the site of the Annapolis Peace Conference, held in November 2007, at the US Naval Academy.
St. Johns College is also in Annapolis.
In 1694, Sir Francis Nicholson moved the capital of the royal colony there and named the town Annapolis after Princess Anne, soon to be the Queen of Great Britain; it was incorporated as a city in 1708
From the middle of the 18th century until the American Revolutionary War, Annapolis was noted for its wealthy and cultivated society.
The Maryland Gazette, an important weekly journal, was founded there by Jonas Green in 1745; in 1769 a theatre was opened; during this period also the commerce was considerable, but declined rapidly after Baltimore, with its deeper harbor, was made a port of entry in 1780.
Water trades such as oyster-packing, boatbuilding and sailmaking became the citys chief industries.
Currently, Annapolis is home to a large number of recreational boats that have largely replaced the seafood industry in the city.
The Maryland State House is the oldest in continuous legislative use in the United States. Construction started in 1772, and the Maryland legislature first met there in 1779.
The United States Naval Academy was founded in 1845 on the site of Fort Severn, and now occupies an area of land reclaimed from the Severn River next to the Chesapeake Bay.
The Armel-Leftwich Visitor Center is conveniently located on the United States Naval Academy, just inside Gate 1 at the end of King George Street.
You will need a photo ID to walk onto the yard.

A Bridge to Cross the Chesapeake. . . 1 877bayspan
Marylanders originally had to rely on boats to cross the Chesapeake Bay to and from the Eastern Shore. But as the population grew and automobiles became a more popular means of transportation, people began to call for a bridge that would cross the Chesapeake. The first plan for such a bridge was developed in 1927, but was quickly forgotten with the 1929 onset of the Great Depression. In 1938, under mounting pressure, the state legislature authorized a roadway crossing the Bay, but this time World War II postponed the effort. In 1947, under the leadership of Governor William Preston Lane, Jr., the Maryland General Assembly directed the State Roads Commission to build a bridge across the Bay, and the first shovelful of earth was finally turned in January 1949.
for more information In SPANISH
The bridge's two-lane original span (which today carries eastbound traffic) cost $45 million and was, at the time, the world's longest continuous over-water steel structure—an amazing engineering triumph. It opened to traffic at 6 p.m. on July 30, 1952 -- at the same moment that the Kent Island-Sandy Point Bay ferry began its very last run. It was the end -- and the beginning -- of an era. Construction of the bridge's $148-million second span, which currently carries westbound traffic across the Bay, began in 1969 and was completed on June 28, 1973. J.E. Greiner Company, Inc.
