Masaya: volcano erupts a lava lake in Nicaragua
Masaya volcano begun to erupt in December 2015. I visited the volcano with a german team of the volcanological society, in late April 2016. The lava lake was quite spectacular. It messured 30 x 15 m and lava splashed several meters high. Beside of the bursting lava bubbles and fontains, I observed the parrots, nesting in the crater of Masaya. In depressions on the crater i found lots of Peles hair.

Masaya Volcano, Nicaragua: I can't believe they let us get this close!
Masaya Volcano, I can't believe they let us get this close!
This is one of the most active volcanos in Nicaragua! Last eruption was in 2008. The lava continues to widen the crater.
We did the night visit up to better see the lava! We waited in line to be one of the first groups up, a certain amount of people were allowed up at a time and at the top we had to reverse into our spot incase of an emergency evacuation!!
This is a must see if coming to Nicaragua! Seeing lava that close was an unreal experience!

This week, we are in Masaya, Nicaragua and we are going to lay our eyes on two beautiful natural landscapes: Masaya Volcano & La Laguna de Apoyo.
Our Masaya journey started in Granada which is around 18 km from Masaya. After a quick ride in a Colectivo bus, we arrived in Masaya and thanks to our Airbnb hosts, we met their nice friend Nelson, who invited us to go visit the Masaya Volcano and the Apoyo Lagoon.
The next day, we visited the Volcano first thing in the morning. The Masaya Volcano National Park is the first recognized and largest park in Nicaragua. There have been many eruptions in the last decades, so many that the indigenous people and the Spanish conquistadors were fearful of the volcano. This is how the main crater of the volcano got the name of ''the mouth of hell'' or ''La boca del inferno''. In the 1500s, they even built a cross next to the crater, hoping to exorcise the devil. Masaya Volcano, Nindiri has 3 craters : Santiago, Nindiri and Santiago.
After all this climbing, we visited the Apoyo Lagoon, ''Laguna de Apoyo'' for the afternoon. Being an ex-crater, the water is super warm and the ambiance around the laguna is pretty chilled and relax. We also met three cool parrots :-)
Next week we will arrive in Honduras!!

Nicaragua Masaya Volcano - Portal to the underworld
Day 3 of our 14 day trip in Nicaragua brings us to the Masaya Volcano. This volcano is the first active volcano we have been to and it is amazing. From high above you can see a lake of lava bubbling around. Truly a sight to see. From the Masaya Volcano we headed to the town of Masaya to check out one of their markets. We ended our night back at the Paradiso hostel at laguna de apoyo to enjoy some happy hour drinks and some star gazing! The end of the video shows one our second of several attempts to capture a star time lapse at laguna de apoyo, and it was one of the best. We also had fun shooting a time laps of some locals night fishing in the lake under a light! Hope you enjoy watching. Make sure to subscribe to be notified of future videos. Check back every week for a new episode from this 14 day trip!
