THE MASCA WALK, AMAZING HIKING IN TENERIFE, SPAIN
Royal Path. From Santiago del Teide, we will start walking through the old royal path, we will be surrounded by unique nature and we will have a magnificent view of Teide.
On the second part, we will walk between cultivated terraces, where you can see tropical fruits, such as bananas, mango and papaya. We will also see animals for example goats and ostriches!
At the end of our hike, we have an hour on board a boat to enjoy the sea and the view of the cliffs of Los Gigantes.
???? Masca Valley, Road to Masca, Amazing Hike - Masca Barranco - Tenerife
Masca Barranco closed.
The straw which broke the camel’s back was a group of walkers who, despite an orange level weather alert for heavy rain and strong winds, still decided to tackle the Masca Barranco.
Reaching Masca Bay they found the jetty damaged and no boats waiting to take them back to the safety of civilisation. There was also a weather alert for wild seas which kept the water taxis in harbour. They were lucky a goatherd was seeing out the storm in the area as they would have attempted to walk back up the ravine, possibly resulting in a more tragic end to this tale. The goatherd advised them to stay put, leading the stranded hikers to a cave where he knew they’d be safe, sharing some of his food and water.
Rescue copter, Masca Barranco, Tenerife
The following day the emergency services were able to rescue the walkers from Masca Beach. Later that day the goatherd spotted more hikers in the ravine.
Within the following week the authorities announced the closure of Masca Barranco, prohibiting members of the public from entering it until measures were put in place to make it safer.
It’s easy to blame this group of walkers for the closure of the ravine. There’s no arguing their actions were irresponsible and not something I’d expect from experienced hikers. But we regularly maintain even experienced walkers can underestimate the terrain and weather conditions on Tenerife and other Canary Islands. But the fact is the walkers in question were only the latest in a long, long line of people who are ultimately responsible for the closure of the Masca Barranco.

Dangerous walk from Los Gigantes to Masca, Tenerife 2017
Barranco de Masca Walk - Tenerife
After booking your return boat trip from above the harbour, take the taxi from Los Gigantes to Masca, at the start of the walk. After 3.5 hours, reach the sea, have a swim then return on the boat to the start - fabulous.
We found trainers were fine and don't forget your camera, water, something to eat and your costume and towel if you fancy a bathe off the jetty at the other end. There is no cafe or shop after leaving Masca.
As we were photographing and filming all the way down, it actually took us 4 hours, but this was pretty casual.
i submitted this video to give you a look at the typical terrain before leaving.
Go and enjoy.

???? Terrifying Road To Masca By Coach ???? (Tenerife Travel Guide 2019)
Join me on a terrifying coach trip to Masca on the island of Tenerife. The road to Masca is the island’s most notorious white knuckle drive, twisting and turning its way down the sheer side of a mountain in a series of gravity-defying switch backs.
Ironically, the road to Masca is actually one of the safest roads on Tenerife where accidents are a rarity, and that’s because everyone is driving so slowly that even if they make contact, there’s usually no more than a smudge on the bumper to show for it. But that’s not to say a plunge over the edge is beyond the realms of possibility, particularly given how badly some visitors drive this stretch of road.
Masca is one of the most picturesque parts of the island and is located in the northwest at the foot of the Teno Mountains. This beautiful little village may be somewhat difficult to reach but it is well worth the journey, which takes you through deep ravines interlaced with lush green flora and winding roads with hairpin bends. The scenery on the way is breathtaking and once you reach Masca, the natural beauty of this stunning location is overwhelming.
Until recently it was virtually unknown, but has now become a centre of attraction for those touring the island. The setting of the village is magical and its houses perch precariously on the narrow ridges of dramatic rock formations. It really is a photographer’s dream destination.

Places to see in ( Canary Islands - Spain ) Masca Walk
Places to see in ( Canary Islands - Spain ) Masca Walk
Masca valley Tenerife is a spectacular area in the western part of Tenerife, Canary islands. It is named after a tiny Masca village which is at around 600 meters above the sea level. This is a popular touristic spot and many people take part in Masca walk, a 4.5 kilometers descent through Masca gorge, from the village to the sea.
The majority of visitors perform the Masca walk in one direction only, by descending to the sea and then taking a boat to Los Gigantes. In May 2015, the boat ticket was 8 Euro. You may make payment online. When you get out of the gorge and continue walking toward the sea, first what you will see are two ‘offices’ waiting for you at each side of the path. These are just two small table desks and two people from two agencies who take care about boat-taxi. So you will check your registration there and receive the ticket. If you still have enough time before the boat comes, you will have a chance to enjoy the beautiful beach with black volcanic sand and perfect water of the Atlantic ocean.
You may do it the other way around, by boat from Los Gigantes to the beginning of the Masca valley and then climb up through the gorge to Masca village. For this, you may arrange a taxi to wait for you at the upper end of the route.
The descent is not easy, but it is much harder if you decide to do the Masca walk in both directions. This is 600 meters altitude difference. As for the timing in any of the two variants, well, it depends on your physical conditions; you may think about anything between 5 and 7 hours.
The landscape is volcanic, vertical cliffs around at many places, sometimes hundreds of meters high. At one point you will see a great stone arch above you, and you will have short passages through at least one natural rock tunnel. You will be passing water streams a few times, so the path may be slippery at such places, and in the case of rain in general.
( Canary Islands - Spain ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Canary Islands . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Canary Islands - Spain
