'Mask Of Sorrow' Gulag Memorial Gets New Life
The Russian-American sculptor Ernst Neizvestny designed three memorials to the millions of victims of the gulag system of Soviet labor camps, but only one was ever realized. Twenty years after the first monument was unveiled, a private initiative is bringing the second one to life in Yekaterinburg.

Kolyma - Exposé of the Soviet Union's Most Brutal Siberian Concentration Camps
This film, based on eyewitness testimony, details the most notorious gulag in Siberia - and some of its horrific crimes and atrocities.
The Kolyma region (Russian: Колыма]) is located in part of the Russian Far East. It is bounded by the East Siberian Sea and the Arctic Ocean in the north and the Sea of Okhotsk to the south. The extremely remote region gets its name from the Kolyma River and mountain range, parts of which were not discovered until 1926.
The Kolyma, part inside the Arctic Circle, is characterized by frigidly cold winters lasting up to six months of the year. Permafrost and tundra cover a large part of the region. Average winter temperatures range from -19 °C to -38 °C (even lower in the interior), and average summer temperatures, from +3 °C to +16 °C.
In the Stalinist era, Kolyma became the most notorious region for the Gulag labor camps. A million or more people may have died en route to the area or in the Kolyma's series of gold mining, road building, lumbering, and construction camps between 1932 and 1954. It was Kolyma's reputation that caused Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, author of The Gulag Archipelago, to characterize it as the pole of cold and cruelty in the Gulag system. The Mask of Sorrow monument in Magadan commemorates all those who died in the Kolyma forced-labour camps. (Source: Wikipedia)

Kolyma - Birthplace of Our Fear

Long Way Round Trailer
Long Way Round (LWR) is a documentary documenting the 19,000-mile (31,000 km) journey of Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman from London to New York on motorcycles. They traveled eastwards through Europe and Asia, flew to Alaska and continued by road from there to New York.
From 14 April 2004 to 29 July 2004, McGregor, Boorman, motorcycle riding cameraman Claudio von Planta and their support crew traveled from London to New York, via Western and Central Europe, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Siberia and Canada, for a cumulative distance of 18,887 miles (30,396 km). The only sections of the trip not undertaken by motorcycle were 580 miles (930 km) by train in Siberia, which circumvented the Zilov Gap; a short impassable section towards the end of their Russian journey, which was undertaken by truck; and a 2,505-mile (4,031 km) flight from Magadan in eastern Russia to Anchorage, Alaska.
Upon encountering numerous swollen rivers and a serious lack of functioning bridges while traveling along the Road of Bones to Magadan, the riders got their BMW motorbikes through some fairly deep rivers. However, the summer run-off from the Siberian winter was in full flow and after a valiant effort, the bikes eventually had to be loaded into the trucks of passing drivers and ferried across a few of the deepest rivers.
The journey visited twelve countries, starting in the UK, then passing through France, Belgium, Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, USA and Canada, ending in New York. The team mainly stayed in hotels while traveling in Europe, North America and populated parts of Russia but frequently had no option but to camp after reaching Kazakhstan and Mongolia. They took time to visit a variety of sights and landmarks while traveling, including the Church of Bones in the Czech Republic, the Mask of Sorrow monument in Magadan, Russia and Mount Rushmore in the USA. They ultimately arrived in New York on schedule and rode into the city accompanied by a phalanx of bikers, including McGregor's father Jim and the Orange County Choppers crew.

4 Romani in Siberia ep.2
Am continuat drumul spre Magadan, unde am marcat punctul la masca durerii monumentul celor decedati in gulag. ne-am continuat cautarea gulagului in episodul urmator .
In the second episode we debute with an umpleasant incident that got us late with 9 days of intense body work and 10 days more on the road to our guest Maxim from Krasnoyarsk. After that we continued the road to BAM, getting some transmission mechanics on the road. The offroad siutation put us on a limit with a lot of near death crossings over Vitim bridge and many other tense situations. We are still considering that one of the intense crossings was the Kuanda bridge, disbanded in 1980, the only way to cross the river was a guarded feroviar bridge. The guard was a Moldovean, who tried to run from Moldova 35 years ago but he was caught by URSS and obliged to work in mine and after the fall of URSS he started guarding the bridge for a living. after that, we stopped in Yakutsk where we started some needed mechanics because the bones road was up next on the road to Tomtor where we visited the cold record monument still keeping the -71,2 degrees record . The next city was Uts Nera, a mining city being the northest point of the expedition after that we continued to Magadan where we thicked on the list the mask of sorrow , in memoriam to people killed in gulag. We contined in the next episode the gulag exploration.
