The Great Long Island Blizzard of 1978 in Massapequa
In 1978, I got the greatest birthday present an 11 year old could want. THE ENTIRE WEEK OFF FROM SCHOOL, without being sick!!!! I believe snow started to fall Sunday by Monday morning we were burried. I remember my mom had the old radio tuned into WGBB and i was waiting with breathless anticipation. As the announcer was rolling through the school closings, i heard the four greatest words that sounded like words from heaven... Massapequa school district closed. Enjoy my birthday present from 1978.
The Human Race: New York Area Tribes Fight for Survival
The Fox 5 series The Human Race is an ongoing examination of race and identity in America. Many Native Americans across the country fear the few remaining connections to their heritage are being taken away.
Some Native Americans in Queens are fighting to preserve their legacy. The United States is in the midst of an identity crisis. Questions abound about who belongs and who has the right to be here. For American Indians, this debate dates back centuries and carries on to this day.
The complicated history of some of New York's first settlers begins in Queens. Inside a cemetery there, a stone split open by a tree carries the burden of both life and death. Unkechaug Nation Chief Harry Wallace said some of his ancestors are buried beneath the boulder. He said the boulder represents something strong. But he said his tribe deals with a living hurt because back in 1931, at least two dozen bodies -- members of the Shinnecock, Montauk, and Matinecock tribes -- were removed from an ancient burial site, as relatives and descendants looked on, and moved to a mass grave.
Queens historian and author Jason Antos said that the city needed to widen the boulevard in anticipation of the World's Fair. He said some of those remains that were moved to make room for what is now Northern Boulevard likely belonged to some of New York's first settlers. Antos said the Matinecocks were some of the first residents of the north shore of Long Island and Queens. They lived in small groups near the bay and spoke the languages of the Algonquian family. The dialect was spoken by hundreds of thousands of natives from Canada to Virginia. Antos said they were hunters, farmers, and fishermen.
But like nearly all Native Americans, by the 1900s most who settled in New York were overrun. Today, natives make up less than 2 percent of the U.S. population.
Osciola Townsend, chief of the Matinecocks, said that after all these years, just three families still live in Queens. The group is now working with the Queens Memory Project and Douglaston-Little Neck Community Library to preserve their story. He said what happened to them is still happening in some form today and mentioned the Standing Rock, North Dakota, protests. More than 90 Native American tribes gathered there to protest the controversial Dakota Access Pipeline. The Trump administration recently gave the pipeline the green light.
That brings us to Mahwah, New Jersey, and the Ramapough-Lunaape Nation. For the indigenous Americans, identity has always been tied to the land itself. Protecting the earth is a fight we still see today and why the Ramapough-Lunaape Nation put up teepees standing in solidarity with the Standing Rock protesters. Then it became very clear they had their own pipeline proposed to run through their land. It is called the Pilgrim Pipeline.
Chief Dwaine Perry said a lack of a political stronghold nationally has always worked against American Indians. He said that Native Americans don't vote in large numbers because, he said, they are afraid of the power structure.
Since the Indian Citizenship Act of 1924, access to polling stations near Indian reservations has also been an issue. There is no reservation, however, about opinions on the current state of politics. Perry mentioned the Trump travel ban and said he would invite anyone insecure about their own race to come to a ceremony with his tribe to relax and learn something about being human.
Tecumseh Ceasar, of the Matinecocks, asked the rhetorical question: who are the real immigrants? If we're talking about who was here first, then please vacate the premises and give us our land back, he said. Ceasar said he balances the realities of the U.S. today and the importance of carrying on the history in his blood. He said that people like him are still alive is amazing.
Unkechaug Chief Wallace said, There's an ancient saying by an ancient chief that says 'Time follows time, nation follows nation like the waves of the sea -- none of us are immune from the common destiny.'
Destiny -- maybe like what happened with the stone in the cemetery in Queens. Inscribed on the front is: Here lies the last of the Matinecocks. What has risen from the ground -- that tree -- tells a different story.
The memory of it was misrepresented, Chief Wallace said. I think the tree is evidence that we are still here.
They are still here. While the Matinecocks have never stopped seeking answers from the city, over all these years some history is visible. Part of Northern Boulevard was recently renamed after the tribe. It is the site of the Battle of Madnan's Neck, where the Matinecocks made their last stand before being driven out.

This is my second audit so far. First for post offices. There was an issue with my phone and it was recording only up to 10 minutes so the videos were divided into 10 minute intervals with a few seconds break in between to start recording again. Also I cut out some waiting time for the police because it took a little while. This post office had no Poster 7 on the walls. The public servant here will be seeing me again when I serve her a copy of it soon. I'd say the officers did a fair job handling this situation. Actually they seemed pretty quiet about it all. They must be learning. Any comments or criticism will be appreciated and I should've went back inside just to assert my rights and correctness to the worker but I found it best to let it be and wait until next time.
LOOK AT THE DETECTIVES FOLLOWING MY FRIEND AND I SHORTLY AFTER ESCORTING MY FAMILY HOME. THANK GOD I PULLED OUT MY PHONE BEFORE THEY HOPPED OUT THEIR CAR. ALWAYS REMEMBER A PICTURE CAN BE MORE POWERFUL THAN A WEAPON SOMETIMES.
To all my new supporters thank you all for the well wishes. God bless America.
1992 UFO sighting of Southaven, NY uncovered
The following has been researched by filmmakers of Fight On Entertainment.
On November 24th, 1992, locals around Southaven Park on Long Island saw an unidentified flying object at 7pm Eastern time. Over the next few days, only Federal level agents from a local lab were allowed in the park to take something out of the quarantined park. This is what information we have been able to gather from that occurrence, which will be the basis of the short and feature films: Return to South Havin!

UNDER The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge - Brooklyn, New York USA
When it opened in 1964, the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge was the world's longest suspension span. The ends of the bridge are at historic Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn and Fort Wadsworth in Staten Island, both of which guarded New York Harbor at the Narrows for over a century. The bridge was named after Giovanni da Verrazano, who, in 1524, was the first European explorer to sail into New York Harbor.
Its monumental 693 foot high towers are 1 5/8 inches farther apart at their tops than at their bases because the 4,260 foot distance between them made it necessary to compensate for the earth's curvature. Each tower weighs 27,000 tons and is held together with three million rivets and one million bolts. Seasonal contractions and expansions of the steel cables cause the double-decked roadway to be 12 feet lower in the summer than in the winter.
Located at the mouth of upper New York Bay, the bridge not only connects Brooklyn with Staten Island but is also a major link in the interstate highway system, providing the shortest route between the middle Atlantic states and Long Island.
In Brooklyn, the bridge connects to the Belt Parkway and the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and to the largely residential community of Bay Ridge. On Staten Island, which saw rapid development after the bridge opened in 1964, it joins the Staten Island Expressway, providing access to the many communities in this most rural of the city's five boroughs.

Sands Point Preserve - Castle Gould #3
Howard Gould and his wife, actress Katherine Clemmons, purchased the estate property in 1900 and 1901; Castle Gould was the first of four mansions built here, designed by architect Augustus N. Allen in 1902, modeled after Ireland’s Kilkenny Castle. Completed in 1904, this impressive 100,000-square-foot limestone building was intended to be the main residence on the estate, but, when Katherine decided that it did not suit her, Howard proceeded to build Hempstead House. Castle Gould then served as the stable, carriage house, and servants’ quarters and now houses the Visitor Center, Great Hall, and a 7,000-square-foot New York State-certified sound stage – a.k.a. The Black Box.

Waves Thrash Massapequa on Long Island | Hurricane Sandy New York
As Hurricane Sandy churned inland as a downgraded storm, residents up and down the battered mid-Atlantic region woke on Tuesday to lingering waters, darkened homes and the daunting task of cleaning up from once-in-a-generation storm surges and their devastating effects.
Power remained out for roughly six million people, including a large swath of Manhattan. Early risers stepped out into debris-littered streets that remained mostly deserted as residents awaited dawn to shed light on the extent of the damage. Bridges remained closed and seven subway tunnels under the East River remained flooded.
The storm was the most destructive in the 108-year history of New York City's subway system, said Joseph J. Lhota, the chairman of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, in an early morning statement. We are assessing the extent of the damage and beginning the process of recovery, he said, but did not provide a timetable for restoring transit service to a paralyzed city.
At least seven deaths in the New York region were tied to the storm, which toppled trees and sparked fires in several areas. In Breezy Point on the Rockaways, nearly 200 firefighters were still battling a blaze on Tuesday morning that destroyed at least 50 tightly-packed homes in the beach community. A Fire Department spokesman said the area was probably the most flooded part of the city, so there are all sorts of complications.
The surging water also caused extensive complications at NYU Langone Medical Center when a backup power system failed Monday evening, forcing the evacuation of patients to other facilities. Backup power also failed at Coney Island Hospital in southern Brooklyn, though critical patients had been evacuated in advance of the storm.
Nine hours after making landfall at 8 p.m. on Monday, the storm -- already downgraded from Hurricane Sandy to a post-tropical cyclone -- weakened as it passed west across southern Pennsylvania, though it still packed maximum sustained winds of 65 m.p.h., the National Hurricane Center said. It was expected to turn north and head for Canada late on Tuesday.
The storm had unexpectedly picked up speed as it roared over the Atlantic Ocean on Monday, grinding life to a halt for millions of people in more than a half-dozen states, with extensive evacuations that turned shorefront neighborhoods into ghost towns.
The wind-driven rain lashed sea walls and protective barriers in places like Atlantic City, where the Boardwalk was damaged as water forced its way inland. Foam was spitting, and the sand gave in to the waves along the beach at Sandy Hook, N.J., at the entrance to New York Harbor. Water was thigh-high on the streets in Sea Bright, N.J., a three-mile sand-sliver of a town where the ocean joined the Shrewsbury River.
It's the worst I've seen, said David Arnold, watching the storm from his longtime home in Long Branch, N.J. The ocean is in the road, there are trees down everywhere. I've never seen it this bad.
In New York, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo's office said late Monday night that at least five deaths, at least three involving falling trees, were attributable to the storm in the state. About 7 p.m., a tree fell on a house in Queens, killing a 30-year-old man, the city police said. About the same time, two boys, ages 11 and 13, were killed in North Salem in Westchester County, when a tree fell on the house they were in, according to the State Police.
In Morris County, N.J., a man and a woman were killed when a tree fell on their car Monday evening, The Associated Press reported.
Earlier, a construction crane atop one of the tallest buildings in the city came loose and dangled 80 stories over West 57th Street, across the street from Carnegie Hall.rooklyn-Battery Tunnel flooded from end to end,
Hurricane-force winds extended up to 175 miles from the center of the storm; tropical-storm-force winds spread out 485 miles from the center. Forecasters said tropical-storm-force winds could stretch all the way north to Canada and all the way west to the Great Lakes. Heavy snow was expected in some states
Subways were shut down from Boston to Washington, as were Amtrak and the commuter rail lines. About 1,000 flights were canceled at each of the three major airports in the New York City area. Philadelphia International Airport had 1,200 canceled flights, according to FlightAware, a data provider in Houston. And late Monday night, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg said cabs had been instructed to get off New York City roads.
A replica of the H.M.S. Bounty, a tall ship built for the 1962 movie Mutiny on the Bounty starring Marlon Brando and used in the recent Pirates of the Caribbean series, sank off the North Carolina coast. The Coast Guard said the 180-foot three-masted ship went down near the Outer Banks after being battered by 18-foot-high seas and thrashed by 40-m.p.h. winds. The body of one crew member, Claudene Christian, 42, was recovered. Another crew member remained missing.

What Happened When We Visited a Haunted House in New York
When Miss Fanny Van Wyck, born in 1903, passed away in 1988, she could never have imagined her house would be auctioned off by the state against her dying wish. Now her ghost is believed to remain in Miss Fanny's Victorian Party House in Poughkeepsie, New York. The home is known as one of the most haunted in New York State. InsideEdition.com visited the historic location with a psychic medium to explore the house and find out if it really is haunted. The results were truly terrifying.
