This cozy not-for-profit museum and cultural center dedicated to the culture of Milne Bay Province opened in 2016 under the direction of passionate curator Joan Winter, who specializes in Pacific Island art. The exhibits include striking wood carvings, canoe art, basket weaving, contemporary art, community photography and more, much of it donated by locals. Stop by the souvenir shop for interesting curios.
The Museum currently has two history exhibitions: The Rise and Fall of Samarai, and Milne Bay's place in WWII: The Battle of Milne Bay 1942. More contemporary displays include paintings & objects created by Milne Bay artists and weavers. The museum's permanent collection includes 40 carvings and 12 story boards from the Malinowski Legacy forum carving project. Visiting the Kenu and Kundu Festival
Historic Vessels curator David Payne and Indigenous curator Helen Anu recently attended the opening of the museum's Massim Canoe exhibition at the Massim Museum and Cultural Centre in Papua New Guinea.
This video was filmed on Saturday 2nd November at the Kenu and Kundu Festival in Alotau, Milne Bay Province, PNG.
The war canoes featured were re-enacting a raid - they race toward the beach paddling to a chant. Then, leaping from the canoes, their paddles become weapons.
The Kenu and Kundu festival is held every year in Alotau - thousands come from nearby to see the canoes, community events and dancing over three days.
