There's a clip up from this series over on Dailymotion under LisaFalour. Anyone with any type of e-mail account can follow my Dailymotion postings -- I post less there, but it's different from what I post on YouTube, and I like to hide special things there. You get notified on your e-mail when I've posted something new, and can ignore it and delete the e-mail if you don't want to see what I've put up there. Dailymotion tends to be less restrictive, so I've been able to add some original elements there I wouldn't dare try here.
Your comments and video responses are welcome. My two channels on YouTube are CUTECATFAITH and SLOBOMOTION.
This is what artist Jean Pierre Raynaud built in La Garenne-Colombes, France, a bit North of La Défense. He lived here for quite some time and added to and extended this unusual home/art project, which is now a museum and meeting point. It can be visited for free in the afternoons on weekends and all holidays except for December 25 and January 1. It is accessible by SNCF commuter train and many buses. Take a map if you go because this is in a residential area. The address is 10, avenue Rhin-et-Danube 92250 La Garenne-Colombes (France) and the phone number is 01 72 42 45 74. The website mastaba.fr can give you more information.
There are also events in this place, including musics and a sports affiliation if I understand correctly. Raynaud will be speaking here in May 2013 and I'm sorry I'll have to miss that, as I'll be away. His first tile house project, started elsewhere in France in the '60s and continuing until he decided to destroy it and document that in the '80s, is very famous, as are his modern/contemporary art works. He was born in '39 near here and his father was killed nearby in WWII bombings. He feels a lasting connection with this place.
I am not sure what he is like as a person, but I suppose that doesn't matter all that much. Lovers of architecture, art and preppers, too, find validity in Raynaud's doings, even though a couple of marriages were sacrificed to his philosophy and his neighbors probably have a few choice words for him. (He did some pranks at the first tile house, including painting it all night in camo and draping it with nets, and another time putting barbed wire around it.)
A mastaba is an ancient Egyptian funerary monument.
Photos and videos are permitted in this place without restriction. One of the guides was very interested in how I found out about Raynaud and this house and was glad I was recording some of my visit and would make it public.

MASTABA 1 Library & Living Room Areas (France)
This famous house by Jean Pierre Raynaud is just a bit North of La Défense, on the far West side of Paris, France. Visits are free in the afternoon and there are events here, too. There is information online at mastaba.fr
His first house, which I call The Tile House (I don't know if it has a correct name or not) was elsewhere, and he began tiling it in the '60s. By 1986, he felt its time had come to an end, so he destroyed it systematically, which was documented. I don't know what the neighbors thought of all this over the years, nor what his first wife thought ... I can't really imagine. (The second wife lasted about two years in this house, he said.) Raynaud will be speaking here in May, 2013 and I regret I will not be able to attend. He's done many provocative art projects over time, in various places in the world, and this house, named for a mastaba, an Egyptian funerary tomb/monument is very famous.
He enlarged the house at one point, and I will post another few clips of the interiors. Aside from some superficial water damage I spotted inside, the design looks very interesting, and the house is 3/4 below ground.
The flower pots shown on the library shelves are a recurring motif in his works.
The fireplace was an addition he made, and the extension below ground level has an unusual bathroom, and more. The walls on either sides of the steps going down to the living room level were added only when this became a house/museum, for the safety of visitors. Before that, they were just narrow and open. An elevator/lift was also added for accessibility of visits, and it looks practical. There is an exterior spiral staircase, also. Again, this will be shown in a separate clip or two.

This place is open to the public on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays except for the 25th of December and the 1st of January, from 2 pm until 6 pm. If you visit, take a street map, as this is a residential area and the place might be hard to find. You can take the SNCF trains to La Garenne-Colombes or Courbevoie and walk here, or take the buses 73, 161, 163, 176, 262, 272, 358 or 378.
Raynaud's theories on living spaces are worth reading about and hearing -- there are numerous books and documentaries about this. He is still alive and was born near here in 1939. His father was killed in the area in 1944 by WWII bombing. He feels a tie with this area.

Entrance to Mastaba 1 (Tile House)
The artist, Raynaud, who built then enlarged this architect's/artist's home was born near here on the West side a bit beyond Paris, France in 1939, and his father was killed during WWII bombing here in the area in 1944, so the artist wanted to construct something nearby with that in mind. His tile house (as I call it) was built elsewhere, beginning in the '60s when he was a young man first living there with a wife, starting a family, but he quickly became unhappy with the place. The marriage ended in divorce and he took to covering the traditional, wall-papered walls with white tiles, eventually clearing the place out, tiling everything, blocking off the windows and making only one very unusual one ... until some years later, when he decided it was time to destroy that house. He did it largely himself.
Around 1986, in another location, this one was created, then enlarged, and the second wife lasted a couple of years, as he put it in French. It's a museum-house you can visit most afternoons at no charge, and there are events here, too.
The name Mastaba refers to his inspiration by funeral monuments of old Egypt (Mastabas). This home is three-quarters below ground, and lit from skylights and a dome. The artist's strange, reoccuring theme of a flower pot can be seen here inside and out. Raynaud claims that he felt just fine in his home, and that no one complained of feeling claustrophic in it. Even when it was in smaller form, the white surfaces and simplicity, along with natural light during the day and bright nights, doesn't make it seem too closed off (to me, anyway). The lift/elevator for the disabled and walls on either side of the narrow stairs leading down into the living room, to make it a bit safer for the public. The fireplace was not an original feature, but the artist had it added after not too long there.
To get here by public transportation, you can use the SNCF station La Garenne-Colombes our Courbevoie. By bus, 73, 161, 176, 262, 272, 358 and 378 would get you here, but take a street map, as this is in a residential area. It's just north of La Défense, and the juxtaposition of the modern skyscrapers there along with some old houses and buildings in a posh, tidy area with Villas (private alleys/streets behind grilles), upscale small businesses, and an air of expensive orderliness is really amusing. I spotted a few really interesting-looking restaurants in the area, so you might want to consider making a reservation at one of those, having a long, pleasant lunch if you can afford it, then seeing this house-museum after. A tiny house in this area, 50 square meters (that's small!) goes for around half a million euros.
I wonder what his neighbors around the first tile house thought of his ongoing works and that noisy destruction, which he carefully documented?
Oh, well. It's all for art!
