Tsuwano Japan's most beautiful Town with a hidden inari shrine
#Japan #rural #travel
Tsuwano is a town located in Shimane Prefecture, Japan. Tsuwano is also know as Little Kyoto of San-In.
Famous for its beautiful traditional Japanese streets and fish that live in the side water gutters. Unusually, Tsuwano is somewhat home to two Catholic churches. The Catholic church in Tsuwano itself is dedicated to Saint Francis Xavier, who visited Japan as a missionary in 1549–50,
In this video I explore the incredibly beautiful Tsuwano town, check out it's famous fishy residents, explore an unusual Catholic church and find an extraordinary set of Tori steps that led me to one of the best shrines I've ever explored.

Interview with Bessie Masuda, internee at Rohwer Relocation Center
As a child, Bessie Masuda and her family were forced to leave their home in Lodi, California, and move to Stockton Assembly Center, where they would eventually be transferred to Rohwer Relocation Center in Arkansas.
She discusses her transition from a happy childhood on her family's farm in California to the heartbreak her family endured during World War II. This clip is a selection from an hour and a half interview of Masuda for the documentary, _Time of Fear_, which shared the stories of Japanese Americans who were interned in Arkansas during the war.
Masuda was among 110,000 Japanese and Japanese Americans who were sent to internment camps under Franklin D. Roosevelt's Executive Order 9066. Signed on Feb. 19, 1942, the order granted the U. S. government authority to relocate both citizens and non-citizens based on the fear that anyone with Japanese ancestry was a potential spy or saboteur.
This interview is a part of UALR's Center for Arkansas History and Culture's collection, Life Interrupted. Every month, the Center will release a new interview clip, leading up to our exhibit on Japanese American internment in Arkansas, which will open in September 2014.
Making Pokémon Curry w/ Developers of Pokémon Sword & Pokémon Shield
Nintendo Minute is never a minute! This week we did something truly special. We got a chance to make Pokémon curry with developers Junichi Masuda and Shigeru Ohmori from GAME FREAK, Inc. In the Wild Area in Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, there is a really cool curry making feature complete with a curry dex with over 100 curries. That’s a lot of curry! We thought we would try to recreate the Spicy Sausage Curry IRL while we chat with the developers about Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield. We had so much fun and it was really yummy. We hope you enjoyed this video and we’ll see you next week!

Curry Recipe:
Roux:
50g (1.7 oz) unsalted butter
¼ cup plain flour (all-purpose flour)
2 tbsp curry powder (a Japanese brand preferably)
2 tsp garam masala
Japanese Curry Sauce:
2 tbsp vegetable oil
2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
1 small onion, finely diced
¼ cup soy sauce
1 tbsp honey
2 tsp apple cider vinegar
¾ cup apple juice
2 cups chicken stock or water
2 peeled potatoes, cut into bite-sized pieces
1 carrot, cut into bite-sized pieces
chili powder to taste
sea salt to taste
INSTRUCTIONS
STEP 1: To make the roux, heat the butter in a small saucepan over medium-high heat. When the butter is starting to foam, add the flour. Cook, stirring, for 2-3 minutes or until the mixture has darkened slightly. Stir through the curry powder and garam masala. Cook for a further 2 minutes. Then transfer the mixture to a bowl and set aside for later.
STEP 2: To make the curry sauce, heat the oil in a large wok or saucepan over medium heat. Add the garlic and onion. Season with a pinch of salt and cook, stirring every so often, for 2-3 minutes. Then stir in the roux. Then add the soy sauce, honey, vinegar, apple juice and chicken stock or water.
STEP 3: Add the potatoes and carrot. Bring the curry to a simmer. Then turn the heat to low and simmer with the lid off for 45 minutes or until the vegetables are tender and the curry sauce has thickened. Taste and season with salt and chili powder to taste. Remove from heat and serve with steamed rice.

Karuizawa at a glance | Inspiring cities of Japan
Karuizava is one of the beautiful cities in Japan. Think about a perfect town out of the city reach covered in mountains. And jungle across a perfect place for shopping and dining. Beautiful weather and perfect atmosphere and pretty place indeed if you wish to talk to yourself just in case you do not have a girlfriend to walk you through. Karuizawa is a resort town in the mountains near Nagano, Japan. It’s known for mild summers conducive to outdoor recreation like golf. Forests in the surrounding area offer cycling and walking paths along with sites like Kumoba Pond and Shiraito Falls.
When I got down from the train I found a tourist information center right at the corner of the station. Soon I had enough information to move forward and to explore the beautiful town. I walked through numerous stores out there which to me it made it a shopping district with quite a huge number of brands displayed at one place to pick and choose. And not just that there is a beautiful ground with green grass adjacent to it where I found a little pond with colorful fish adding to the beauty of it.
Skiing and hot springs are popular in the winter. Kyu-Karuizawa, the old town center, is the site of a pedestrian shopping strip.

Junichi Masuda, Go Ichinose, Morikazu Aoki – Pokémon Gold / Silver / Crystal | Full Album Vinyl Rip
Enjoying the music? Please support the artists!
This is a limited, unofficial pressing of the Pokémon Gold / Silver / Crystal soundtrack by Junichi Masuda, Go Ichinose, and Morikazu Aoki from 2019 (Pokémon Gold / Silver were originally released in 1999) on the label Red Alert Records. This limited edition pressing came as a Ho-Oh variant, representing Pokémon Gold, or a Lugia variant, representing Pokémon Silver. There were also several variations of test pressings sold, each with special cover art, some of which had gimmicks such as glowing in the dark or changing color under UV-light. Here I've switched between the Ho-Oh and Lugia variants between each side. This release also came with some stickers and an art booklet with the names of the tracks.
After completing Pokémon Gold / Silver / Crystal, it is possible the visit the Kanto region found in the Pokémon Red / Green / Blue games. As the events of the second generation of Pokémon games take place after the first generation, time has passed and some changes can be seen. To accompany this, the arrangements of the first generation games, mainly made by Junichi Masuda, were recomposed, mostly by Go Ichinose. When listening to them, you can hear Go Ichinose's unique style as he makes interesting changes to the classic arrangements.

Journeys in Japan - Yanai - Old Town of Goldfish Lanterns [1080p]
Yanai prospered as a port town in the Seto Inland Sea. It was one of the largest merchant cities in the region during the late 18th century. The city has a tenderly preserved district where merchants' white-plaster grand homes, built in the traditional kura storehouse style, line the street. This charming district is adorned with hanging goldfish lanterns in the summertime. There are also Yanaijima textile shops. This hand-woven cotton textile, which features stripes in indigo shades, was once hugely popular but production gradually declined in the 19th century. However, with the passion of the local people, Yanaijima was revived about 20 years ago.
Yanai City Volunteer Guide Club Volunteer guides show visitors the highlights of Yanai.
Must be booked 10 days in advance. There is also a free hiking tour that starts at 10:30 am from JR Yanai Station. No reservation is required.

Japan's Backstreet Lion Dancers
You hear a knock at your front door. It's a group of Japanese roving Lion Dancers, coming to purify your home...
Normally, lions only dance at major Shinto festivals, but 500 years ago Masuda Shrine in Osaka decided that if you can’t get out to visit them, then they will come to you. For a price. Twenty bucks. For that you also get a pair of chopsticks, though not even the dancers know what they signify. They say it’s part of the tradition, and that’s enough for them.
The dance itself is meant to scare away evil spirits. Although the lion – Shi-shi – originally came from China, it has since taken up residence outside of almost every Japanese Shinto shrine.
The dancers carry everything they need along with them. Time is money, after all. Each troop has a drummer, flutist, moneyman, and dancers, though they often switch around when they get bored.
It’s not just private houses that get purified. Small businesses need all the luck that they can get. This one has a Shinto shrine AND a Buddhist altar – just in case.
The dancers seem to know exactly which doors to knock on -- and someone’s always home. The appointments, it turns out, were made weeks ago by mail. Though in Japan, having an invitation doesn’t mean you know how to find their home address. Street names can change every block or two and house numbers are often randomly assigned.
There are six troops in all. They’re on the road 11 months a year and visit over 100 homes a day. They cover most of the Honshu Island, sleeping in a different house each night and resting only when it rains. It must be very tiring.
But in the end, they’re doing far more than just keeping evil spirits at bay. They’re helping Japan find a way to embrace the new without throwing out the old. And in the process, getting the best of both.

JAPAN: TOKYO: PEOPLE BUYING JELLYFISH AS PETS
Japanese/Nat
From the nation that brought us the Tamagocchi virtual pets comes the latest in craze in real life animal companions.
People in the frantic commercial city Tokyo are buying jellyfish as pets.
They say the sea creatures soothing movements help them relax after a busy day.
It's become such a fad more than three thousand jellyfish have been sold to proud owners in the last year.
After a long stressful day, what better way to unwind than with your adoring pet - a jellyfish.
People in the hectic heart of Tokyo claim the sea creatures soothing movements help them relax.
50 to 60 pet shops in the Tokyo area now sell the sea creatures with them replacing the virtual Tamagocchi pets as the latest craze.
They range in price from about from about 14 to 18 U-S dollars and in just one year three thousand were purchased as pets.

Our intention, when we first decided to sell jellyfish, was simply to show customers that we have some thing rather unique to sell them. To our surprise, our customer showed great interest in jellyfish. They are struck to see jellyfish in a fish tank and realise they can domesticate them. We now think this could become a fad.

Jellyfish never disturb you and you can even leave the house for a week- it doesn't matter to them.
These attributes conveniently accommodate the hectic Tokyo lifestyle.

When I first saw jellyfish at a pet shop, I thought they were cute. You know, there are so many kinds of jellyfish at the shop. There are cute little ones as well. Their movements are interesting and they are so sweet.

Moon jellyfish, the most popular kind, were initially placed on sale one year ago.
Since then the creatures' slow, soothing movement have attracted the attention of Japanese shoppers.
Although they are not a lot of trouble to take care of they do need special tanks for their well being.
If bubbles penetrate jellyfish membranes it could be fatal.
And because jellyfish float, care must be taken to keep them from sinking or getting sucked into the tanks purification pump - so the Japanese invented a new airpump system for their new favourite pet.
And as the price of this special equipment is starts to fall, Japan may find itself in the grip of a new pet craze.
