Masungi Georeserve: Hidden Trekking Sanctuary in Baras, Rizal (Philippines)
Masungi Georeserve: Secret Sanctuary in Baras Rizal
When the daily grind of the city begins to weigh down on you, it's always nice to take a step back and appreciate nature. Just a quick hour and a half from Quezon City is Tanay, Rizal, home of the Masungi Georeserve.
Masungi comes from the word “masungki”, which means “spiked”. This is fitting as one of the prime attractions of this reserve is a 10 kilometer spine of limestone formations.
The 1,500+ hectare reserve is a haven for a variety of flora and fauna and a fun adventure spot for hikers and ecotourists. Every Tuesday to Saturday, at either 7:30 am or 1:00 pm, thrill-seekers can take the 3-4 hour hike around the huge georeserve.
Some sights to be seen are: Tatay and Nanay, two limestone peaks, Yungib ni Ruben, a cave to seek shelter from the hot sun, and Sapot, a web where you can lie down and view Laguna de Bay.

However, keeping Masungi safe for all the wildlife in it has been an uphill battle. “The georeserve is an area we have been protecting for over fifteen years now. Having to deal with a myriad of illegal loggers, quarries, and others, it has been a challenge, but ultimately a meaningful and fulfilling one. Today, we are excited to share our love for the place with you. We hope that you see something special in it like we did.”

Masungi Georeserve Baras Rizal - Is it worth it?
This was the most challenging thing I've done in my life!!!!
It is hard to book a climb on this mountain because a lot of people want to go there and experience what it offers. I was fortunate enough to have a student who managed to book our climb there.
Well, the climb was difficult expecially for a beginner like me, but I was all worth it. The guide was super friendly and they offer food/snacks after the climb.
It is really a must try!!!

Masungi Georeserve, Part 1: Learning the Ropes | Baras, Rizal | Philippines | We.Are.Wanderful
Learning the Ropes at Masungi Georeserve
Part 1: Trip to Masungi — Sapot ni Ric — Masungi Rock Logo
We.Are.Wanderful
SEPTEMBER 30, 2017—Our Masungi adventure was almost 2 years in the making. We've wanted to do Masungi ever since we heard about it almost two years ago. But booking a schedule is very difficult. Last April we decided to attempt to book it no matter what. But the earliest available slot was for late September. We took it anyway.
There's a minimum number of participant per slot: 7 pax (14 max). So we needed to put together a group. We invited old friends. They invited others. We managed to make 8 initially. 4 more were added just a few weeks before our Sept 30 slot.
So on September 30 our Masungi Adventure finally became a reality. We took the earliest slot (6:00 AM) so we started very early. We left home at 2:45am, pick up some friends along the way, then stopped by McDonalds along Marcos HW to meet up with the rest of our group and had early breakfast. Just before 5:30am we arrived in Masungi.
It was a rainy morning though so our hopes to see a beautiful sunrise was dashed, and the prospect of a rained on adventure in Masungi was most real. But by 6am the sky cleared and the sun came out. It wasn't a spectacular sunrise but at least the rest of our day in Masungi was very pleasant.
This is just PART 1 of our Masungi weekend with old and new friends. A lot more to come. Enjoy watching.
And here's a shout out to our old and new friends who joined me, Marie, and Marielle for a most fun weekend in Masungi:
1) Aryan Mendoza
2) Agnes Cacho
3) Carmen Collera
4) Ket Zaide
5) Kathy Torres
6) Camille Toyco
7) Christine Joy Tayson
8) Swaroop Raj Urs
9) Smita Vasudev
Note: Unfortunately for Johan, the minimum age requirement is 13 so he had to miss this.

We went here last December 2, 2018. All videos and images were captured using iPhone SE. No gimbal or camera stabilizer grip used as I'm not actually planning to make a video out of it. But with the help of Adobe Premiere, I was able to create something even as a beginner in using the product.
