Matang Village in Leishan County
Matang Village, located roughly 18 kilometers north of the city of Kaili, is a Gejia ethnic minority village. The Gejia specialize in batik, and are fond of colorful clothing, which includes everyday attire as well as festival costumes. They also are skilled embroidery and the petit point stitch on which it is based.
Matang Village's Gejia girls begin to learn the art of batik (the art of dyeing multi-colored patterns in stages by applying melted wax to the areas where one does not wish the given color to appear, as the wax prevents the dye from penetrating) at a very tender age -- as young as 7--8 years old -- and become adept at it by the time they reach adulthood.
Gejia Batik is purchased the world over -- as well as by tourists to the region, who can often score a bargain on the spot -- by those who appreciate the uniqueness of the Gejia batik patterns as well as the excellent craftsmanship that goes into their production and which rests on lifelong training in the art and technique of batik. Some of the more common items of Gejia batik include women's jackets, coats, dresses and a corset-like vest to be worn over a blouse, while batik suspenders are a typical men's item. Other everyday applications of Gejia batik include curtains, quilt covers, tablecloths and place mats.

The Gejia 革家 called themselves Ge Mong. The Gejia do not like to be called Miao.
The Gejia said, they are descendants of a Han father and a Miao mother. Many scholars believe they are remnants of the western Hmongic branch that migrated back into Guizhou Province.

五粒石是古老的玩意,女孩都喜欢玩,也有男孩参于。五、六十年代在新加坡很盛行。想不到在革家寨也能看到。

Gejia (the group portrayed in this music video) is a Miao sub-group that speak the Western Miao (Hmongic) language branch. They lived close to the Central Miao, but due to historical conflicts, they are one of the few Miao group who do not see they are part of the Miao people. They claimed to be of Han Chinese and Miao mixed. Instead they want to be recognized by their name 革家 (Gejia). Yang Sheng Mei, the singer, is singing about their group. In my opinion, they are entirely Miao (Hmong) as well.
