NIUE, EXPLORING incredible NATURE at MATAPA CHASM (GORGE), SOUTH PACIFIC
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go to the island nation of Niue which is a small island nation in the South Pacific Ocean. It’s known for its limestone cliffs and coral-reef dive sites. Migrating whales swim in Niue's waters between July and October. In the southeast is the Huvalu Forest Conservation Area, where trails through fossilized coral forests lead to the Togo and Vaikona chasms. The northwest is home to the rock pools of Avaiki Cave and the naturally formed Talava Arches.

Hikutavake village Niue Island
Had the awesome opportunity to visit all the villages on Niue Island, Hikutavake village is in the far north-west side of the island. I guess we went there when there was nobody home, like literally not a soul in sight, :)
Utuko Reef, Alofi, Niue
Go to Utuku Reef at low tide and you can see beautiful tropical fish without snorkelling or diving! Video taken with an iPhone, out of the water.

Alofi is the capital of Niue.
The island nation of Niue sits by itself in the South Pacific Ocean about 1,500 miles from New Zealand. It consists of a large coral atoll inhabited by about 1,500 souls, who hold dual citizenship with New Zealand, and speak both English and Nuiean. Nearly half of them live in the capital, Alofi. Activities for visitors are focused around the natural environment, swimming and snorkeling in the clear seas, exploring the many caves that honeycomb the limestone island, whale watching and fishing, and golf on the resort courses.

In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about Niue.
More information about the video content bellow:
1. Niue, whose capital is the village of Alofi, is a self-governing state in free association with New Zealand; and New Zealand conducts most diplomatic relations on its behalf. Niueans are citizens of New Zealand, and Queen Elizabeth II is head of state in her capacity as Queen of New Zealand. Between 90–95% of Niuean people live in New Zealand.
2. Its land area is 260 square kilometres (100 sq mi) and its population, predominantly Polynesian, was around 1,190. The island is commonly referred to as The Rock.
3. Alofi is the capital of the Pacific Ocean island nation of Niue, which is located within the Realm of New Zealand. With a population of less than 1,000 (census of 2014), Alofi has the distinction of being the second smallest national capital city in terms of population (after Ngerulmud, capital of Palau).
4. The first Europeans to sight Niue sailed under Captain James Cook in 1774. Cook made three attempts to land, but the inhabitants refused to grant permission to do so. He named the island Savage Island because, as legend has it, the natives who greeted him were painted in what appeared to be blood. The substance on their teeth was hulahula, a native red banana. For the next couple of centuries, Niue was known as Savage Island until its original name, Niuē, which translates as behold the coconut, regained use.
5. In 1889 Niueans wrote a letter to Queen Victoria, asking to be part of the British Empire. It was only in 1901 that the island was brought within the boundaries of New Zealand. In 1974 New Zealand restored self-government, after a referendum in which most people opted for it.
6. In Niue, political parties have never played an important role. There is, at present, no political party, and candidates to elections therefore run as independents. The only party ever to have existed, the Niue People's Party, disbanded in 2003. As there are no political parties, there is no formal parliamentary Opposition, though there are MPs who oppose the government.
7. Because Niue is a raised coral atoll, it has a geography and coastline like no other Pacific Island. Its landscape will take your breath away, with surprises around every corner. The cave systems are among the most spectacular and extensive in the South Pacific. Above and below water.

EU-BSRP Niue National Emergency Operations Centre Opening highlights
Niue suffered significant damage during cyclone Heta in January 2004, sustaining winds greater than 240km/h, classifying it as a category 4-5 cyclone. The Niue Hospital and dwellings near the shore were damaged as huge waves crossed the cliff line and battered houses, roads and the fuel depot. This event prompted the relocation of critical infrastructure – first the hospital and now the NEOC.
The NEOC is a great example of how development partners collaborate and work alongside the government to address local needs. In this case, the European Union (EU), under the Building Safety and Resilience in the Pacific project (BSRP) implemented by SPC, invested NZD 1.1 million in the construction of the NEOC, while the New Zealand Government contributed NZD 250,000 towards the structural engineering work and fit out of the facility.
