Parawi Duwa (Parevi Dupatha) temple on the Pigeon island, Matara (Sinhalese: මාතර, Tamil: மாத்தறை) , Sri Lanka 2015
Parey Dewa (Rock in Water) or Parevi Dupatha Temple - is a relatively modern Buddhist temple located on Pigeon Island (a small offshore island) in front of the City. It is reached by an elegant Cable-stayed footbridge, which was erected in 2008 (replacing an earlier bridge, which was washed away in the 2004 Tsunami). The temple is set in attractive gardens and houses numerous statues of Buddha and a replica of the gold footprint found on Adam's Peak.

Matara Paravi Dupatha / Matara Pigeon Island / මාතර පරෙවි දුපත The island of Sri Lanka is a mystical land with a history that is mysterious and laden with ancient wonders. The island is filled with various ancient temples and shrines, some in ruins, others in various states of preservation. There is however one temple that is not ancient, but is still popular simply due to its unique nature. Such is the Paravi Duwa Temple located on the Southernmost town of Matara. Matara, despite being a distance away from the island’s commercial capital of Colombo, is still a major city, and is a commercial hub of her own accord, containing lucrative locales such as We Escape a luxurious Weligama hotel, Sri Lanka has to offer. Despite the many wonders in store in and around the Southern coastal town of Matara, perhaps the most awe-inspiring is the Paravi Duwa Buddhist Temple. The temple is not an ancient one, and in fact it was built quite recently. The temple is situated on a tiny off-shore islet known as ‘Pigeon island’, and is reached through a scenic foot-bridge that was recently replaced after the original one was destroyed by the 2004 Tsunami. Regardless of the temple being a Buddhist place of worship, it attracts plenty of visitors from various religious faiths and beliefs simply due to the sheer beauty of it. Many visitors grace the temple to take pictures of the bordering the sea and the beautiful gardens around the temple grounds. An ideal time to visit the temple would be at the beginning of February since a celebration tends to take place featuring traditional dances accompanied by the music indigenous to the island. So if you ever find yourself visiting the Southern section of Sri Lanka be sure to take a glance, or even visit, the Paravi Duwa Buddhist Temple. Information :- sandybeachtrips.com

Paravi Duwa Island, Matara Sri Lanka
Matara historically belongs to the area that is called Ruhuna, which was one of the three kingdoms in Sri Lanka (Thun Sinhalaya). The temple in the middle of the town is also built by ancient kings, and now it is a very popular sacred place among the Buddhists in the area. In the 16th and 18th centuries, Matara was ruled by the Portuguese and the Dutch respectively. The culture and architecture can still be seen in the area. The popular light house in Point Dondra was built by the Dutch, and it is considered as one of the most beautiful and oldest light houses in Sri Lanka. The two fortresses that were built by the Portuguese and the Dutch can be found inside the city. Other important works by the Dutch are the St Marie's church and the market place in Nupe junction.

Star Fort, Matara (2016)
The Star Fort (Sinhalese: මාතර තාරකා කොටුව) is a fort in Matara, Sri Lanka, located on the eastern bank of the Nilwala River, approximately 350 metres (1,150 ft) from the gate to the Matara fort. It was constructed by the Dutch in 1765, and was originally called Redoute Van Eck.
In 1640 the Dutch completed the main fort at Matara but found it to be vulnerable from attacks coming from land. In 1762 Singhalese forces backed by Kandyan Kingdom attacked and took control of the fort. In 1763 the Dutch regained control of the fort and that year commenced construction of another smaller fort on the east bank of the Nilwala River, in order to protect the main fort from attacks originating from the river.
The Star Fort was built to a unique shape of a six pointed star with space for 12 large cannons to cover approaches from all directions. The glacis or outer wall is approximately 7.5m (25 ft) wide and is surrounded by a 6m (20 ft) wide and 3.1m (10 ft) deep moat. The rampart walls of the fort are constructed out of granite rock and coral, and are 14 feet (4.3m) in width. The fort was built to hold a small garrison, food supplies and enough ammunition to withstand an attack before being re-inforced from the main fort. The fort also had a two prison cells and a 2.75m (9.0 ft) diameter well in its centre to supply water. The drainage system was internal and disposed of the water collected from the monsoon rains to the moat. The date of construction (1765) is embossed over the main gate with the Dutch East India Company insignia and the coat of arms of the governor flanked by two rampart lions. The entrance gate of the Star Fort, which is faced with coral, is also emblazoned Redoute Van Eck 1763, commemorating the Dutch Governor of Ceylon, Lubbert Jan baron van Eck (1719 - 1765). The roof of the building originally was roofed with cadjan leaves, which were later replaced with clay tiles.
The fort is said to be the last major defence post built by the Dutch but never had the chance to prove its effectiveness. In 1796 the fort was handed over to the British with the surrender of the Sri Lankan territory by the Dutch. The British used it as an administrative office and in 1965 it was used as a library until 1975 when it was acquired by the Department of Archeology. The fort has subsequently been restored and currently houses a museum, which showcases the history of Matara.
Special Note for the Viewers:
I’ve done this video to make other human beings aware of the beauty of this place and please don’t misuse this information in order to ruin this place. I’ve spent so much of time/money bringing this to you so that you may enjoy it. However I’ve a very kind and humble request from you all.
Should you ever visit this place, you’re kindly requested to adhere to the following in order to save our Mother Nature (essentially Our Country) not only for the future generations but for the current one as well:
* Avoid careless/reckless/irresponsible/money-oriented/mega tour groups or organizers.
* Travel in smaller groups as Mother Nature can’t afford so many footprints at once.
* Minimize the use of polythene/plastic and do bring back if you have to take any with you.
* Don’t litter and even if it’ bio-degradable, please bring it back and dispose of the garbage properly and responsibly. Because no matter what it is, it will still be alien to that environment.
* Use reusable water bottles so that you don’t have to keep buying plastic ones. It’ll not only save you money but will help save nature massively.
* Remain quiet and vigilant. Don’t disturb the tranquility of the nature. Instead savor it.
* Try and bring if you spot any litter/garbage left behind by other careless travellers.
* Don’t light fires unnecessarily and do try to use portable cookers instead of using firewood when camping. The increase usage of firewood leads to more deforestation even at a smaller scale.
* Don’t bring any plants back with you or break any plants/branches unnecessarily.
* Don’t walk off the designated footpath.
* Don’t use soap/detergent/shampoo when bathing in natural streams as they’d only lead to the contamination of those pure water sources and elimination of wildlife species.
* Don’t do anything that harms the Mother Nature.
